Jones crushes Lebedev: The strange odyssey of Guillermo Jones continues…

On May 17, Guillermo Jones scored a major upset with an 11th-round knockout of WBA Cruiserweight Champion Denis Lebedev. Jones, 41, has enjoyed a bizarre, but successful career and he is now back in the mix along with promoter Don King--despite the fact that both fighter and promoter had been written off recently.
Jones is a fighter with a world-class pedigree that stretches back over 15 years. His success encompasses a mind-boggling range, from junior middleweight (154 pounds) all the way to cruiserweight (200 pounds). Yet in spite of all that, he’s not even the most popular guy in the sport named Guillermo.

Much of the blame falls on Team Jones. After the 6’4” stringbean lost in two close title shots to a good 154-pound champion in Laurent Boudouani, it would be another 4 years until he resurfaced in a TV bout. For most of us, we had to do a double-take when we saw that Jones was fighting at cruiserweight. It was like “Isn’t that same tall skinny guy who fought Boudouani twice?...

Russian Boxer Suffers Ugly Swollen Eye

I’m not sure when Russian professional boxer Denis Lebedev (25-2, 19 KOs) decided to enter the ring against Guillermo Jones (39-3-2, 31 KOs) in Russia Friday night, if ever expected to walk out with 8 inches more eye socket. But that is exactly what he got after he suffered an 11th-round KO in their WBA cruiserweight title fight.
I would recommend starting the video around the 36:00 mark.

Hey bro, your eye is growing a head.

Check that, your eye looks like a vagina.

Guillermo Jones of Panama regained the WBA cruiserweight title in his first fight since 2011, stopping local favorite Denis Lebedev in the 11th round Friday night.

Jones, who won the title in 2008 and then retained it twice, inflicted a horrific bruise around the Russian's right eye before flooring him near the ropes with 56 seconds left in the round.

The Panama fighter improved to 39-3 with two draws and 31 knockouts. The fight was his first since stopping Michael Marrone in November 2011.

Lebedev dropped to 25-2.

Guillermo Jones Thrillingly Upsets Denis Lebedev For WBA Title

Denis Lebedev (25-2, 19KOs) came into Friday nights fight against Guillermo Jones (39-3-2, 31KOs) a heavy favorite.
Caption the Photo: Denis Lebedev’s Eye After Being KOed in 11th Rd in Russia

They say the reason that there are no more great American heavyweight boxers is because they all play football. Football provides you with a helmet, so it is understandable.
Denis Lebedev isn’t a heavyweight, he is a very good cruiserweight who once beat a washed up Roy Jones. I am pretty sure he wishes he had a helmet on when he got in the ring with Guillermo Jones on Friday Night in Moscow.
It was a hellacious fight that probably should have been stopped around the 5th-6th because of Lebedev’s eye swelling, but brutally it went on until the 11th round before Jones knocked Lebedev out.

I am not a doctor, but I did watch the Big Bang Theory last night and that doesn’t look too good. I have seen a lot of boxing matches over the years and I can never remember seeing an eye that swollen, I pray he doesn’t have permanent damage. Thanks to Larry Brown Sports for the photos.

Boxer has his eye battered in loss

Denis Lebedev (25-2, 19 KOs) was defeated by Guillermo Jones (39-3-2, 31 KOs) by 11th-round KO in their WBA cruiserweight title fight in Crocus City Hall in Moscow on Friday, and it was apparently a pretty ugly show. ESPN’s Dan Rafael was covering the fight and called it a fight of the year candidate. He says Lebedev suffered a cut above his right eye in the first round and that it became an absolute mess after that. Rafael continued to wonder how Lebedev was able to fight with his eye in such bad shape and why the fight wasn’t stopped. After seeing the pictures, we’re wondering the same thing. Despite the bad condition of his eye, Lebedev apparently was still able to hit Jones before going down for good in the 11th. Here’s what the eye looked like before the 11th round began: Lebedev’s eye at the start of the 11th round.
The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Lucas Matthysse, Shane Mosley And Alexander Povetkin

Get excited, there are some good fights this week. There is also a ridiculously cool Game of Thrones poster at the top of this post, designed by Saul Bass and available for $40. We’d really like to see someone do something similar for some vintage fight posters – how cool would that be?

Anyway – from Moscow to Cancun, let’s get to the fights.

Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse, Saturday, Showtime, Atlantic City. This might be the highlight of the spring boxing calendar. A full preview will be along later in the week, but briefly – I think this will be a scorcher. Junior welterweight Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO) is fast becoming the sport’s #1 action hero. Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO), one fight removed from a positive drug test, is as gutsy as they come, preferring to mix it up at close range. Matthysse is the kind of puncher who likes a bit of separation, so it’ll be interesting to see how he deals with Peterson being all up in his grill. That said, I think he bloodies him u...

Denis Lebedev vs. Guillermo Jones: Don King’s last hurrah?

The fight might be getting little press in America, but in Russia, May 17th's bout between Guillermo Jones vs. Denis Lebedev for the WBA Cruiserweight Title is big news. The explanation for why is not just that Lebedev is Russian, but that Don King has been doing his royal best to hype the fight with the Russian media. Seeing King on RT should remind everyone that although he is elderly, King can still talk with the best of them.
Even so, when Bernard Hopkins took Tavoris Cloud's IBF light heavyweight belt, Guillermo Jones became the last world champion in King's much-diminished stable. In the clearest indicator of King's weakened place in boxing politics, his staple tactic of forcing opposing fighters to sign with Don King Promotions (DKP) in exchange for a shot at a King fighter hasn't been employed in years. If Lebedev takes Jones's belt, it raises the question if King should not, at long last, call it a day.

Jones stops Marrone, retains WBA title

Panama's Guillermo Jones successfully defended his WBA cruiserweight title, stopping Mike Marrone in the sixth round Saturday night at Hard Rock Live Arena.

Jones improved to 38-3-2 with his 30th knockout.

Marrone dropped to 20-4.

Jones overpowered the outmatched Marrone with an array of head and body punches.

Late in the fifth round, Jones had the first of two knockdowns, dropped Marrone with a right to the head. Marrone, from Vero Beach, Fla., reached his feet at the count of eight.

The minute's rest between rounds wasn't enough to revive Marrone, a natural heavyweight, who had only one previous fight at the 200-pound cruiserweight limit. Jones carefully measured his shots and landed a series of combinations to the head, sending Marrone to the canvas a second time.

Although Marrone again reached his feet before the 10-count, his cornermen felt he had absorbed enough punishment and instructed referee Tellis Assimenios to stop the fight at 1:55 of the round.
