Hundreds bid goodbye to Camacho

Hundreds of fans of Hector ''Macho'' Camacho turned out Friday for the public wake in the neighborhood where the slain former world champion fighter grew up in New York.

A carriage drawn by white horses carried Camacho's body around the streets of Spanish Harlem, taking the casket cover with a Puerto Rican flag to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.

On a frigid afternoon, people waited patiently on the crowded sidewalks around the church. They chanted ''Macho time!'' -- the phrase Camacho regularly used before his fights.

''Thank you, Nueva York,'' said Camacho's mother, Maria Matias.

The boxer's son, Hector Camacho Jr., had similar feelings. ''I was feeling down, feeling down, but these people definitely woke me up and lifted my spirits up,'' he said.

Camacho, a native of Puerto Rico, was shot in the face Nov. 20 while sitting in a parked car with a friend outside a bar in Bayamon, his hometown in the US territory. The friend, Ad

Cat fights breakout at Hector Camacho’s wake

In life boxer Hector “Macho” Camacho was an electric yet polarizing figure and in death he is still living up to his lightning rod status.
The former world champion was shot dead outside of a bar in Puerto Rico on November 20 while sitting in a parked car that was found to contain multiple sealed and unsealed bags of cocaine.
Camacho battled the disease of addiction for most of his adult life and as that life was celebrated there were several undercards that took place at his wake/viewing in Puerto Rico.

Hector Camacho Dies After Family Takes Him Off Life Support

Hector Camacho died on Saturday at a hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, days after he was shot in the face. The loved, but troubled boxer was one of the most colorful and charismatic boxers of his generation.
Camacho was shot on Tuesday while sitting in a Ford Mustang with a friend. The former boxer’s friend died from his injuries as well. The former boxer was initially expected to survive the shooting, but his health went downhill on Tuesday night.
He never regained consciousness after the gunshot and life-support machines were disconnected on Saturday after doctors announced he was brain dead, reports The Washington Post.
Packets of cocaine were discovered in the car with Camacho and his friend, but police have made no arrests in the shooting so far. “Macho” Camacho was considered one of the brightest stars of his era. He was able to perform in the ring with dazzling speed and had an unorthodox, crowd-pleasing style that helped him win his first world title at the age of 21.

Camacho declared clinically brain dead

Doctors say famed Puerto Rican boxer Hector `Macho' Camacho is clinically ''brain dead'' after being shot in the face. Dr. Ernesto Torres said at a news conference Thursday that doctors are still performing tests on Camacho before meeting with his family, according to The New York Daily News. Torres had said late Wednesday that Camacho was showing irregular and intermittent brain activity. The 50-year-old Camacho was shot as he and a friend sat in a Ford Mustang parked outside a bar Tuesday night. Police spokesman Alex Diaz has said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Hector Camacho shot & badly injured, but alive, in Puerto Rico

Boxing fans may either love or hate Hector "Macho" Camacho. But nobody wants to receive news like this. The former boxing champion was badly wounded in a shooting on Tuesday evening in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The first report that we found, in Spanish, is from ElNuevoDia.com, but the story has since been picked up in various outlets, and the consensus is that while he is seriously injured, he is in stable condition and will survive the ordeal.
ESPN's story had this to say on the Hector Camacho shooting:
At least one gunman opened fire on the 50-year-old Camacho and another man as they sat in a car in the city of Bayamon. The other man, whose relationship to the former boxer wasn't immediately known, was killed, according to a statement from police.
Camacho was rushed to Centro Medico, the trauma center in San Juan, where he was in critical but stable condition, Dr. Ernesto Torres, the hospital director, told reporters.
The bullet apparently struck him in the j...

Reports: Hector Camacho shot

Boxing legend Hector "Macho" Camacho was shot late Tuesday night in Puerto Rico and is in critical condition, according to multiple reports.

Several outlets are reporting that that Camacho, 50, was seated in a Ford Mustang when shots were fired from a second vehicle, and that the driver in the Mustang was killed.

According to El Nuevo Herald, Camacho was shot in the neck and face and taken to a hospital, where he is listed as being in grave condition.

Hector Camacho surrenders to police

Boxer Hector Camacho has turned himself in to police in Orlando after he was charged with child abuse for allegedly assaulting his son.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the 49-year-old former champion is accused of picking up his teenage son by the neck, slamming him to the ground and stomping on the boy's foot in March 2011.

The boy reportedly told police Camacho was "high on drugs" at the time and looking for a bag of money at his ex-wife's home. The Florida State Attorney's Office filed charges in November.

Camacho surrendered to authorities Monday and posted a $5,000 bond.

A representative of the Puerto Rican boxer told TMZ on Tuesday that Camacho does not use drugs, and that, "everything has been resolved between him and his family."

The representative said the dispute was over money, but said Camacho called police himself before any physical altercation occurred.

Camacho owns a career record of 79 wins, five losses and three draws, with 38 victories by knockout. C

Boxer Hector Camacho charged with child-abuse

Former champion boxer Hector ''Macho'' Camacho is facing a felony count of child abuse and turned himself in to Florida authorities this week on a warrant filed late last year.

The 49-year-old Camacho posted a $5,000 bond at the Orange County Jail in Orlando on Monday and was released.

According to the arrest affidavit, Camacho surrendered on a warrant that records show was filed by the state attorney's office in November.

State attorney's spokeswoman Danielle Tavernier said the office first received the case in May. Camacho's attorney Linda George says the charge stems from a family dispute that turned into yelling and a neighbor called police.

She says the boxer only recently learned of the complaint and reported to officials to resolve it.

Camacho Jr. withdraws from tomorrow’s FNF with hand injury

Update: Mitchell Replaces Camacho Jr. in Co-Feature on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights

Middleweight Eric Mitchell (23-8-1, 11 KOs) and former middleweight title challenger Elvin “The Lycan” Ayala (24-5-1, 11 KOs) will meet in the 8-round co-feature on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra March 30. Mitchell replaces Hector Camacho Jr. who pulled out with a hand injury.
There had been much buzz coming from Camacho Jr's camp about how much more serious he was taking this training camp and his preparation, and he was even working with his father in camp. So, hopefully this was a legit, last-minute injury worthy of pulling out of the fight, and not an excuse due to poor training or anything else.
Friday’s show will air at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, from Mashantucket, Conn. Lightweights “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy (21-1-1, 11 KOs) and “Dangerous” Dannie Williams (21-1, 17 KOs) will meet in the 10-round main event.

Like father, like son - Camacho Jr. trains with legendary father to prepare for upcoming title fight on ESPN
Even in some of the more impoverished streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Hector Camacho Jr. finds signs of encouragement.
A morning jog results in a chance encounter with champions both past and present – Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Lopez – all of whom train regularly in their native Puerto Rico, which Camacho Jr. calls “an island for fighters.”

Ayala’s 10-round showdown against Camacho Jr. (53-4-1, 28 KOs) will be televised on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.”
“He’s coming in to fight hard,” Ayala said, “but I plan on leaving with the belt.”
The 10-round main event of “All In” features Philadelphia’s “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy (21-1-1, 11 KOs) – ranked No. 4 in the WBC – defending his North American Boxing Federation (NABF) lightweight title again
