Harvey Makes a Dent in Gotham

See what I did there? Yes, I know I’m a geek.
I realize it’s only one start and there are many starts yet to go, but you can’t be a Mets fan and NOT be excited about Matt Harvey. Growing up in Connecticut, he is no stranger to cold weather, and he went out and pitched all Jack London style in the freezing cold on Wednesday night, racking up another 10K outing. When talking to the media afterwards he told them “jackets have no place on a baseball fieldâ€* when asked why he shunned Terry’s insistence he put on a coat. That’s a MAN’S MAN right there!
When Ron Darling was asked which pitcher he thought Harvey most resembled, his answer was Justin Verlander. Not a bad guy to be compared to. Even Mike Francesa seemed impressed with Matt when he interviewed him on WFAN this past Thursday. 2012 AL Cy Young award winner David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays even tweeted his Harvey love:

Â
Â
Â
Harvey has a presence on the mound that is rare. A big-bodied right-hander that is “dialed inâ€

The Never Ending Story Called Relocation of the A's

What could have been... Cisco Field in Fremont

This is a guest article by Angie Picardo
"It's getting ugly in Oakland" might best describe the A's ongoing battle. Despite over 40 rich years of history in their fair city, the Athletics are preparing for a future approximately 40 miles south in San Jose. The man behind the upheaval of an Oakland institution is none other than A's owner Lew Wolff. To paint Wolff as a Grinch may be uncalled for. He's simply a businessman with roots in the real estate industry, who has gone on record as starting that there is no viable long term solution in Oakland. To many in Oakland, however, he is evil incarnate.
Despite a season that defied expectations and included a Western Division title and the organizations first playoff berth since 2006, the A's are no closer to obtaining a new home than before. However, 2012 brought a renewed interest in the team, and their passionate fans were lauded for their support du...

Bud Selig's Field of Dreams Legacy: Saving the Oakland A's

It's True: Major League Baseball Revolutionized Under Selig's Tenure
Say what you want about the highs and lows of Bud Selig's 20 year tenure as the 9th Commissioner of Major League Baseball, but be sure to include the following:

	> he took an economically moribund professional sport and generated a series of monster revenue engines that have created financial empires for virtually every MLB team owner;
	> he instituted Wild Card and Divisional play and helped create the World Baseball Classic;
	> he merged the National and American Leagues under the Commissioner's Office and created revenue sharing among franchises.

There have also been many misteps, blunders, and negative outcomes during his tenure. Selig's slow response to the use of performance enhancing drugs among players in the 1990s and 2000s helped create a baseball era.

But now Bud Selig has two more seasons left on his contract before he retires after the 2014 baseball season...

Bay Area 2024 It Can Happen

Olympics – Bay Area – 2024. Why not?
Well, okay, sure, there are a ton of reasons why not. But let’s focus on the why.
The Bay Area has a huge advantage over most other Olympic venues, mostly because such a large number of venues already exist. Stadiums and arenas are all over the area. The amount of construction required for athletic events wouldn’t nearly match the plans in other American cities such as Chicago or New York…or Tulsa, apparently.
Tulsa? Really?
Because of that, the money could be used to help the Bay Area with what it needs, not only for hosting a competition like this, but also for the long-term: Improving infrastructure from freeways to mass transit systems. Electrify Caltrain? There’s money for that. BART to San Jose and Downtown? There’s money. Extend light rail and Muni? Improve chokepoint intersections? There you go. Venues that do need renovation could be used for the many local universities to improve their facilities.
The Bay Area is also a m

Ghana To Mark International Workers Day

Business News of Monday, 30 April 2012Source: GNA Ghanaian Workers led by the Trades Union Congress in collaboration with Government are set to join the international community to commemorate May Day 2012 at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region. This year’s celebration comes with the theme, “Election 2012: The role of workers in ensuring peaceful and fair elections”. The day would be used to take stock of the contribution of labour to the socio-politico-economic development of the world in general and Ghana in particular. May Day or Labour Day has its origins in America when the Federation of Organised Trades and Labour Unions in 1884 started agitating against harsh working conditions. Working hours were severe and it was quite common to work 10 to 16 hours a day in unsafe conditions. Death and injury were common at many work places and inspired the writing of books such as Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” and Jack London’s “The Iron Heel”. As early as the 1860′s, working people agitated ...

Stupid Sports Names, The Bracket: Round 3

The Ides of March are nigh. Spring is in the air. And before you know it, brackets will be dispersed throughout the country and the greatest tournament in sports will commence. Drama will ensue. Great games will go down in history. And Anthony Davis’ eyebrow will fly above the rim like an albatross in the sky.
Until then, we settle for less. We settle for a tournament that isn’t about basketball – it’s about pride, it’s about power, and it’s about being the best damn mascot in America. Great foes have already fallen, such as the Richmond Spiders, now just a smear of guts on the rolled up newspaper of the American nation.
Tonight, the results of the Sweet Sixteen are revealed, setting the stage for an Elite Eight unlike any other ever staged. Who needs March Madness when you can pregame with some February Fun-times? Here are the results of the Sweet Sixteen Games:

Stupid Sports Names, Volume III: The Bracket

We’ve all been there. It’s March Madness time and the blank bracket lays before us in its immaculate difficulty. We consider ourselves masters of the madness, capable of dropping knowledge about basketball like it’s our job. And for one month –it is. We painstakingly consider each game, each player, each possible upset, until, in the end, we’ve filled out the perfect bracket. With pride, we turn the bracket into our office pools, fraternity contests, and ESPN’s latest competition.
Then we lose to the person that picked their bracket based on team mascots and which colors were prettier. We curse the system, rip up our bracket, drink ourselves into submission, and forget that we just witnessed a hell of a basketball tournament.
If you can’t beat them –why not join them?
This is a chance to fill out THAT bracket. This is a chance to decide which mascots reign supreme in the world of Division I College Basketball. This is a chance to tell office-gal Ruby, the defending March Madness Champion, to t

Selig Says A's Future Is Taking Priority

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig says the Oakland A’s move to San Jose is “really on the front burner” with baseball owners. Owners are in Scottsdale, Ariz., for the annual winter meetings.
Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News reports the A’s issue never made it onto the agenda of Thursday’s meeting which all 30 owners participated. But afterwards Selig spoke at length about the possibility of the team moving. What is really holding up the move is that the San Francisco Giants have territorial rights to the South Bay.
MLB formed a committee nearly three years ago to explore the move. Selig reviewed a report from that committee on Wednesday. He called it “comprehensive.” Now Selig says he expects a decision soon. The next owners’ meeting is scheduled for May. However, Purdy reports a vote could happen over the phone. The A’s would need 75 percent of the owners of the 32 teams to approve the relocation.

MLB Owners: Oakland is "Past its Time" for A's

The city of Oakland has plenty of fans, just not at the Major League Baseball winter meetings.

A's owner Lew Wolff has many boosters at the annual powwow of MLB executives, however -- Wolff, and his plan to move the team to San Jose.

"I'm totally supportive of Lew getting a new ballpark and going to San Jose," said White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, in comments to the San Francisco Chronicle. "He needs to be there. It has to come to a head soon."

Wolff and the A's have long made clear their intention to exit the East Bay city for friendlier climes. A stadium plan for Fremont floated in the mid-2000s seemed imminent before the real estate market collapsed. Now, Wolff is eying land in east San Jose for a stadium. The plan would need approval from MLB and the Giants.

Oakland hasn't made any serious moves towards refurbishing the Coliseum, and ideas for a field at Jack London Square have not gotten off of the drawing board.

"Certainly, (the Co...
