QB legend breaks down Halliday, Apodaca

AS HE SAT in the stands at Joe Albi Stadium last Saturday, several thoughts raced through Hall of Fame Washington State quarterback Jack Thompson’s mind. First off, that Cougar quarterbacks have some serious potential. And second, he kept asking himself “where in the heck was this offense in my playing days?”

Darrelle Revis' addition opens new path for Bucs' draft

TAMPA, Fla. Many had labeled his day a victory, and Mark Dominik stepped to a stage prepared to plan for the future. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager was two hours removed from introducing cornerback Darrelle Revis on Monday in that same room at One Buc Place, a moment that will influence how the general manager is remembered. Already, his draft strategy had changed.A deal to land the NFLs top defensive back from the New York Jets was rumored for months. The Bucs pass defense from last year, which surrendered a league-worst 297.4 yards per game, was a glaring offseason weakness, and the signings of Revis and former San Francisco 49ers safety Dashon Goldson, through free agency in March, had made the Bucs secondary a projected strength in the pass-heavy NFC South.Gaining Revis came with a cost, but one not as high as thought earlier. The Bucs gave the Jets their 13th overall pick in this years draft, which begins Thursday, in addition to a fourth-round selection after next season that could become one

Mike Leach back swinging his sword at Wazzu

When he walked into the ballroom of the posh, marbled Fairmont Olympic Hotel on that chilly December night, the likes of Drew Bledsoe, Jack Thompson and Rueben Mayes were suddenly just faces in the crimson and gray crowd.

For most of the last decade, through record seasons of losing and embarrassment, jokes and punch lines, the past exploits of those Washington State greats were the ones fans and alumni latched onto as the football program fell into irrelevance.

But when Mike Leach stepped into that room and donned a crimson hat with the Cougar-head logo, he became the face of Washington State.

No longer did the 40 losses in the last four seasons or the losing by nearly 20 points per game during that time matter.

With Leach in charge, being a Coug was cool again.

''I've been around a long, long time and I believe this is unprecedented energy in our fan base,'' Washington State athletic director Bill Moos said. ''That's what I told you I expected but this has exceeded what

Years after Vinny, Bucs have common theme

The new head coach is a tough, no-nonsense guy, plucked from the college ranks to turn around a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team reeling in losses and from a lack of discipline.

The oft-criticized ownership desperately wants to win back disenchanted fans.

The quarterback is the face of the franchise: a tall, talented kid who made a splash in the NFL draft and now carries the hopes and dreams of the Bucs on his strong passing arm.

Sounds a lot like today, doesnt it?

But Im not talking about rookie NFL head coach Greg Schiano, fresh out of Rutgers University and determined to undo the 4-12 mess of 2011 under Raheem Morris. And Im not referring to the Glazer Family or star quarterback Josh Freeman.

Welcome to Aug. 3, 1987.

It was 25 years ago Friday that a photo of No. 1 overall draft pick Vinny Testaverde was splashed on the cover of Sports Illustrated sporting that old Buc orange, with the headline trumpeting: THE NFLS 8 MILLION MAN.

The issue also contained a five-page feature about his life, dazzling collegi

Top 5 Quarterbacks in WSU History

Top 5 Quarterbacks in WSU HistoryAs we inch closer to the start of college football, it is always nice to look back at the history of your program and see the players of the past who have left a lasting impression on it. Here’s my list of the top 5 quarterbacks in the history of Washington State University.
5. Alex Brink (2004-2007)
As a 3 ½ year starter for the Cougars, Brink amassed some serious numbers in the passing department. His career totals of 10,913 passing yards and 76 TD passes both rank as the most all-time at WSU. However, the one record in his possession all cougar fans truly admire is 3-1. Although the program went through its up and downs in his tenure at quarterback, Brink managed a 3-1 record in Apple Cups and is the only QB in school history to beat the Huskies 3 times.
4. Jason Gesser (1999-2002)

Gesser passes Elite camp to Morgan

THE QUARTERBACKING tree at Washington State is known to be tight, and this story illustrates the point. As a kid growing up in Seattle, Cole Morgan wanted to become a Cougar because Jack Thompson was the best coach he ever had. When Morgan arrived at WSU as a freshman QB, Jack introduced him to another old Cougar signal caller: Jason Gesser.

The Violent Video Game Myth

Thirteen years ago, on April 20, 1999, two students walked through the doors of Columbine High School with evil in their veins and embarked on a hellish killing spree that left 15 dead-- 13 students, one heroic teacher, and the two gunmen themselves-- and countless others injured. It was the worst school shooting in America at that time. In the aftermath, people struggled to come to grips with what happened and why. They searched for answers, wondering what could have caused Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold to commit such an atrocious act. They wanted to know who or what to blame. One of the culprits offered up for blame was violent video games. Harris and Klebold were both fans of Doom, a gory first-person shooter. The belief was that the violence in games such as Doom desensitized Harris and Klebold to violence and encouraged their murderous behavior. People like disbarred attorney Jack Thompson went on the attack against video games, claiming they were “murder simulators”. Studies were released that claim

The turnout was great and I didn’t see an empty chair in the place. The only drawback was there wasn’t any Bridgeport at the bar.
So, I had slum it with some Black Butte as they didn’t stock any Animal beers either. My goal was to try and track down all coaches and get their take on our program. With the exception of Clay Mcguire and Dave Emerick, I acclomplished my goal. So let’s start at the top with Mr Bill Moos. Moos was working the room and took time to stop and talk with everyone. He was still driving hard on his vision of rebranding the university and how we all must open up and contribute. Must have worked because before the night was over I lost temporary control of my right arm and I volunteered $200!...

Top Hip Hop Fight Songs about Football

Hip hop is an expression of one’s personality and life, which is no surprise that sports are often mentioned in songs since for many people sports is life. While the NBA has had somewhat of a stranglehold on hip hop songs, the past few years have seen more artists gravitate toward rapping about football teams. To honor the increasing amount of play football is getting from hip hop, here are the best football themed fight songs.
“Black and Yellow” by Wiz Khalifa

Perhaps the quintessential song that represents the love of a team the best is “Black and Yellow.” In the song, Wiz Khalifa professes his allegiance to his town and the Pittsburg Steelers. This song sparked an array of remixes and remakes like “Green and Yellow,” Lil Wayne’s song about the Green Bay Packers.

NINE Game Losing streaks don't get coaching extensions

Raheem Morris has coached the Bucs to their third best record ever, 10-6 last year. This year, he has coached the Bucs to tie the longest losing streak in franchise history not including the expansion years of 1976 and 1977 (14 game streak and 12 game streak respectively). With a loss next week, Morris will have the only 10 week losing streak in a non expansion era.Raheem Morris already has a seven and nine game losing streak on his resume here, something only Leeman Bennett has accomplished in 1985 (nine) and 1986 (seven). No head coach in Bucs history has ever lost 10 straight games in non-expansion years ('76/'77) when the Bucs went 0-26.Jon Gruden never lost more than 4 in a row.Tony Dungy lost Five in row his rookie year.So did Richard Williamson; 5 in a row twice in his only full season as coach, a 3-13 record in 1991.Sam Wyche lost 6 in a row in 1994, but at the end of 1994 the Bucs finished strong, and won 4 of the last 5, including 4 in a row for the first time in 15 years!
