Johnny Bos to be honored at Ring 8 meeting this Tuesday

Ring 8 will pay tribute to the late, great matchmaker Johnny Bos tomorrow night (Tuesday, May 21 starting at 7:00 p.m. ET) at historic Waterfront Crabhouse, in Long Island City, New York.
Many of Bos' friends, family and associates have been invited to attend tomorrow's Ring 8 monthly meeting in an effort to raise funds to help defray the costs of Bos' funeral. One-hundred percent of all proceeds raised tomorrow from new Ring 8 membership fees ($30.00 per year entitles each member to a buffet dinner at Ring 8 monthly meetings), as well as any group or individual donations, will go directly towards Bos' funeral expenses.
The eccentric Bos - known as "The Wizard of Bos" - helped develop the careers of countless boxers over the years, particularly in New York, as a matchmaker and advisor. Some of "Bos' boxers" include Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield. Pernell Whitaker, Gerry Cooney, Paulie Malignaggi, Joey Gamache, Yuri Foreman, Jameel McCline and T...

Tyson Fury vs. Steve Cunningham preview & prediction

Fight Pick & Preview - Fury vs. Cunningham:
On April 20 at MSG, rising young heavyweight contender Tyson Fury takes on former cruiserweight kingpin Steve Cunningham. This will be the British Fury’s first stateside performance and probably his toughest test thus far in his young career. The 24-year-old unbeaten heavyweight will be facing a slick, though severely outsized, opponent in “USS” Cunningham, who was denied rightful victory in his last bout against Tomasz Adamek.
Fury is nice little X-factor in the heavyweight division. He’s 6’9” and has youth on his side at 24 against the 36-year-old Cunningham. Fury has grown from domestic British prospect to legitimate world contender. He beat top guys from his region, including a win over then-unbeaten Dereck Chisora. In his last win, he beat American contender Kevin Johnson on points.

Date: April 20, 2013

Main Event:
Dominican Republic’s Cayo has won his last four fights, three by knockout. Maryland’s Taylor, has won his last two fights and is coming off one of his best wins, a sixth-round TKO over Raymond Serrano.

Sherman Tank Williams: I’ll give Helenius more than he can handle

Bahamian road warrior Sherman "Tank" Williams heads to Finland in a few weeks, not for a Scandinavian vacation, but to ruin undefeated Robert "The Nordic Nightmare" Helenius' return to the ring, as well as to give the big Finn his first loss as a pro.
"I'm going to Finland to give Helenius more than he can handle," Williams said from his Florida training camp in Vero Beach. "I'm bringing my 'Conch' (over-hand right) punch and to spoil things for him."
Former European champion Helenius (17-0, 11 KOs) has been out of action nearly a full year, since last December 3 when he suffered a shoulder injury during his highly-controversial 12-round split decision win over Derek Chisora. The 6' 6 ½" Helenius, ranked No. 13 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), has knocked out a trio of former world heavyweight champions: Sergei Liakhovich (TKO9), Samuel Peter (KO9) and Lamon Brewster (TKO8).

Mago continues perfect run: 16-0, 16 KOs, & rises to top heavyweight prospect status

Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing sends his congratulations to the winner and still undefeated heavyweight Magomed "Mago" Abdusalamov (16-0, 16 KOs) after his crushing TKO 2 (1:57) over former world title challenger and long-time top contender Jameel "Big Time" McCline in Moscow, Russia, on Saturday night.
Fighting on the undercard of the Vitali Klitschko vs. Manuel Charr WBC Heavyweight Championship fight, Abdusalamov picked up the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) heavyweight title by dropping and stopping McCline with a single, devastating right hook.
But it wasn't easy.
Known for pulling off surprises throughout his career, McCline was able to catch Abdusalamov with his own powerful right hand early in round one and drop him for a legitimate knockdown.
"McCline put a little scare into us," said a happy Lewkowicz, post-fight. "But Mago handled it very well. He was a little hurt, but he got up, weathered the storm and was in ...

Sampson Lewkowicz, promoter of heavyweight powerhouse Magomed "Mago" Abdusalamov (15-0, 15 KOs), is sending his best wishes to the up-and-coming slugger in advance of his fight this week. Abdusalamov will take another step up in class this Saturday (September 8th) when he takes on former world title challenger and long-time top contender Jameel "Big Time" McCline for the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) heavyweight title in Moscow, Russia, on the undercard of the WBC Heavyweight Championship main event between Vitali Klitschko and Manuel Charr.

Valuev Retires, Opts for Politics

Credit: Sport Express

Fans of "The Russian Giant," Nikolai Valuev, who have been wondering when the big guy will return to the ring can stop wondering. The answer is at least five years, and possibly never, as Valuev has been elected to and sworn in as a deputy in the Russian Duma (the lower house of the national legislature). The Russian heavyweight has been inactive since 2009.
Valuev ran for office under the United Russia party, the leading political party in Russia whose standard bearer is de facto Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Valuev was quoted by RIA-Novosti as saying "While I’m in parliament I should forget about appearing in the ring. It’s impossible to combine such a responsible job and serious preparations for the bouts." It seems serving in the Duma is Valuev's golden parachute from his boxing career. Valuev is 38 years old.
Valuev won notoriety mostly because of his enormous size: he stands 7'2" tall, weighs in routinely above 315 lbs...

Boswell eyes American heavyweight dream

Cedric Boswell is looking to become the first American boxer in five years to hold any of the major world heavyweight belts when he meets WBA champion Alexander Povetkin on Saturday.

The 42-year-old Boswell has won 14 successive fights since the only loss of his career to Jameel McCline in 2003.

The only win of note since then was a 10-round decision over then-45-year-old Oliver McCall in March. McCall won the WBC title from Lennox Lewis in 1994, defended it against Larry Holmes, then lost it to Frank Bruno the next year.

Boswell, in the leadup to his first shot at one of the major belts, said ''the American dream will soundly defeat the Russian pretender.''

Povetkin took the vacant WBA title by beating Ruslan Chagaev on points in August. Wladimir Klitschko gave up the WBA title he won from David Haye when he was made a ''super champion'' by the WBA.

Povetkin now faces Boswell, a former sparring partner.

''It will be an interesting fight for me, for everyone,'

Cedric Boswell is looking to become the first American in four years to hold any of the world heavyweight belts when he meets WBA champion Alexander Povetkin on Saturday.

The 42-year-old Boswell, of Atlanta, has won his last 14 fights since a 2003 loss to Jameel McCline. He proclaimed in advance that ''the American dream will soundly defeat the Russian pretender.''

The Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, with a capacity of 12,000, is nearly sold out for the ''The Night of the Heavyweights,'' largely because of fans of the popular Finnish fighter Robert Helenius, who takes on Dereck Chisora of Britain for the vacant European heavyweight title.
