Top 10 British boxing prospects – a look back one year later

Last June I published a list of what I saw to be Britain’s best ten boxing prospects, considering their achievements and potential. With almost a year having passed since, it is now apt to review exactly what these men have achieved in the intermittent period. What have they accomplished? Have they progressed or regressed? What stands in wait for them in the future? All these questions will be answered as I recap what a year has brought for some of British boxing’s hopeful superstars.
Kell Brook: Welterweight, 27 years old
WAS: 27-0 (18) NOW: 29-0 (19)
Last year I glimpsed into my crystal ball and saw great things on the horizon for Brook. Unfortunately, almost a year on and nothing has changed - those great things remain on the horizon. The good news is Brook remains undefeated. That crucial “0” at the end of a perfectly marketable resume is intact, though not without its troubles. Brook survived a war with Carson Jones, suffering a broken nose along the way. Difficulties in that...

Top 3 British boxers to watch in 2013

With British boxing currently riding high along a crest of a wave, it’s not easy to narrow down my selections to just three boxers to keep an eye on this year. I could have easily chosen those on the cusp of greatness, but it would have been all too easy to spout off the same list of names that has been endlessly mentioned before. Don’t get me wrong, I feel 2013 has the potential to be a huge year for the likes of David Price, Kell Brook, Tony Bellew, George Groves, Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg -- but if you look below the surface there is a further generation of exciting prospects looking to make their stamp on the coming year.
So without further adieu, let me count down my top 3 British boxers to watch is 2013.
3. Kid Galahad
With Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg having made a splash in the super bantamweight division in 2012, Kid Galahad’s impressive year went largely under the radar, but expect that all to change in 2013.
The Sheffield youngster has gone 13-0 since turning pro ba...

British Beat: Kevin Mitchell And Ricky Burns Vie To Become Glasgow’s Razor King; Carl ...

(Kevin Mitchell, left; Ricky Burns, right)Britain’s best match-up of the year takes place Saturday, as cockney wrong ‘un Kevin Mitchell invades Glasgow to tackle Scotland’s smiling assassin, Ricky Burns. The Dear Green Place isn’t exactly an ideal pit-stop for a fighter with a propensity for swimming at the bottom of a bottle. Nevertheless, Mitchell, who pissed away any momentum gained from his sterling effort against Manchester pressure fighter John Murray last year, is hoping that it can frame a redemptive scene that will allow him to grab a seat at boxing’s top table. Burns, meanwhile, looks to solidify his position as one of the finest lightweight boxers in the world, against a top 10 rated opponent who has long been a friend, and is now, fleetingly, a professional obstacle.

Burns, 29, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, is ranked third at 135 lbs. by Boxing News Magazine (Mitchell, 27, has been pegged at number 6 by the same publication). A hustler with a veteran’s poise, Burn...

The Best British Prospects in Boxing 2012

When assessing a prospect, it is important to forget how old they are, how many defeats they have on their ledger and how many knockouts they have scored, as the cream tends to rise to the top regardless. Taking this into account, below is my list of the top 10 British prospects in boxing to look out for in the coming years.
Some are better known than others, and only one has challenged for a world title, but I feel all genuinely have good chances of competing at the highest level as they advance in their careers. So, in order, here are my top 10 British boxing prospects in 2012.

1) Kell Brook 26 years old, Welterweight – 27(18) - 0
The man they call “Special K” is the latest prodigy to arise from the talented backdrop of the Ingle’s Wincobank gym in Sheffield, a gym that was once origin to the likes of Naseem Hamed, amongst others. He lacks the unpredictability and one-punch power of Hamed, but makes up for it with poise, footwork an...

British Beat: Rendall Munroe Looks To Recycle World Title Aspirations Against Young Gun Scott Quigg

British super-bantamweight gaffer Scott Quigg will be bidding to off the man looming one spot ahead of him in the domestic rankings this weekend -- as perplexing as that must sound to the layman -- Nottingham veteran Rendall Munroe. After relinquishing the European championship he guarded with distinction for the better part of two years (in order to mount an unsuccessful alphabet title tilt against the underrated Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka) Munroe aims to capture domestic gold for the first time while solidifying his status as the best 122 pounder of his country. Quigg, 23-0 (17), almost came unstuck last time out against another old hand in the guise of Welshman Jamie Arthur. The Bury stalker, who built a solid defensive base under former taskmaster Brian Hughes, bumbled into a straight left hand which flipped him over onto his face. It was a flash-point that quickened the pen nibs of the critics of Joe Gallagher, the Manchester guru who inherited Quigg’s reins and whose stable h...

British Beat: Kid Galahad Pads Out His Highlight Reel Against Brampton Bantam Josh Wale

Kid Galahad returns to the ring on Saturday to have himself a skeet shoot at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre in Sheffield. Barnsley rival Josh “The Outlaw” Wale plays the role of clay pigeon. Channel Five continue their most welcome foray into the sport, confident no doubt that Galahad’s back story, a sort of Luke Skywalker to Naseem Hamed’s Darth Vader, is a worthwhile investment for bigger nights to come. For terrestrial viewers in the U.K., it is a chance to watch a young artisan at work, a whip-smart Wincobank padawan making steady strides in the junior featherweight division. His opponent, Wale, is a limited but willing bantamweight scrapper. The Brampton man’s record reads 14-3-1 (7) yet closer inspection reveals that he’s only beaten three fighters with winning slates, and one of those looked a horrible hometown decision to the detriment of French livewire Yoan Boyeaux (a six rounder during which Wale was cut and then dropped). Essentially, that leaves us with a three rou...

Kid Galahad Comes Of Age Against Jason Booth; Chris Eubank Jr. Becomes One-Armed Bandit

ROTHERAM, ENGLAND – There were more moves on show in South Yorkshire on Saturday than at a 1970’s roller disco. Sheffield rookie Kid Galahad, in at the deep end for the first time against Nottingham warhorse Jason Booth, survived a flash 1st round knockdown -- the first points he’d dropped as a professional -- before waltzing off with a unanimous decision win thanks to a boxing masterclass worthy of the Wincobank name. It was entertaining fare from first bell to last with the pair pitting their wits against one another in fast paced celebration of cunning, craft and guile.

Galahad had been in control of the opening round after boxing neatly and firing off quick bursts of body punches. As he backed Booth up into a corner -- like a cat rounding on a wasp -- “2 Smooth” clipped him hard on the side of his head with a sweet counter left that span the 21-year-old favourite around 90 degrees and forced him to touch down with both hands. The Naseem Hamed comparisons had never looked s...

British Beat: Kid Galahad And Chris Eubank, Jr. Grab Lead Roles In 90’s Franchise Reboot

This week’s action comes not from New York City but from Rotheram. The Magna Science and Adventure Centre, a converted steelworks in the South Yorkshire ‘burbs, presents a crossroads fight in its truest sense. Blue-chip junior featherweight rookie Kid Galahad, 10-0 (4), attempts to break cover in a nationally televised showcase against recently deposed British champion and domestic stalwart Jason Booth, 36-8 (15). Chief support heralds the continuing emergence of another kid, this one already laden with expectation, as Chris Eubank, Jr. blows into town to take part in his second professional outing.

The sagacious soul who once declared it impossible to antagonize and influence simultaneously could never have imagined the forebearers to this piece. Galahad was not yet born when Eubank, Sr. unleashed a peacock-strutting act that had been derived in part from the Sheffield sweatbox instrumental to this promotion. A King Rat figure, Eubank’s incendiary public persona helped to nur...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Paul Williams, Tavoris Cloud, Vitali Klitschko And Dereck ...

I'm almost as excited by the future of sport (see the above video) as I am about the boxing that's on this week. Luckily, if there's one sport that will be spared in the Taser introduction revolution, it's boxing. Boxing is already super exciting and features lots of people suddenly falling over. But imagine the boon for less fortunate and exciting sports, like baseball. Anywho, let's get to this week's fights. Paul Williams and Tavoris Cloud are making their respective returns on Showtime on Saturday night after having been out of the ring for a while. Vitali Klitschko defends his heavyweight belt against fun but rather inexperienced Briton Dereck Chisora in Germany on the same day. Jorge Arce is fighting in Mexicali (he seems to fight every couple of hours) and there are Shobox and Friday Night Fights Cards. If you so choose, you could probably pass the entire 48 hour period from Friday night until Sunday doing nothing but watching boxing. Wouldn...

As Belfast’s Carl Frampton shimmers in the aftermath of another well executed hatchet job this past weekend, his domestic rival and newly appointed British king at junior featherweight, Scott Quigg, looks to tilt the spotlight back his way on Saturday against recently retired Welshman, Jamie Arthur. Quigg punched laser beams through Jason Booth in October during an intense showing that coerced the Nottingham veteran to quit while he was still standing at the end of round 7. Arthur, too, tackled Booth in his own last outing, one which the latter managed to shade via split decision around a year ago. It was enough to convince Arthur, a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, to refocus on an alternative career as a fitness instructor (he had previously taken a three-year sabbatical in 2005 after South African journeyman Harry Ramogoadi had derailed him in five). Lured back under the ring lights with the bait of a Lonsdale belt, Arthur starts swinging as a prohibitive underdog ag...

“Men of Steel” Card in London Feb 18th Features Chris Eubank Jr & Kid Galahad vs. Jason Booth

Hennessy Sports announced today that Kid Galahad and Chris Eubank Jr will be looking to impress millions of fight fans and lead the way as the new generation of boxing stars when they both appear on the "Men of Steel" event at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham on Saturday Feb.18.
Sheffield's unbeaten hot prospect Kid Galahad will be vying for his first professional title when he takes on former British and Commonwealth champion and IBF world title challenger, Nottingham's Jason "2 smooth" Booth for the WBC International Super Bantamweight title, which has been previously held by great fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Naseem Hamed.

It Was A Very Good Year: A Review Of British Boxing In 2011

2011 has already been denounced in some quarters as an annus horribilis for British boxing. As viewpoints go, it’s a tad short-sighted and one probably informed by the nation’s dismal away record in alphabet world title fights and little more. Closer inspection reveals a bustling domestic scene packed with highly competitive and action-packed contests, many of which were attached to British, Commonwealth or European championships. Rather than being one to forget, it was in fact a year to remember on the home front.

After David Haye and Audley Harrison conspired to leave Sky Sports’ pay-per-view model clinging to a cliff face in 2010, any subsequent fiascos were always likely to threaten the finger ends. Just such an instance occurred in April, resulting in the network doing away with PPV ventures altogether. The final straw came during the Paul McCloskey versus Amir Khan promotion, a show hampered by a seemingly cursed undercard and the strange decision to host it in Mancheste...
