Biosse defeats Spina in Rhode Island showdown

Biosse stuns sold-out crowd at Twin River with dominant victory over veteran Spina
Something about the bright lights and the big stage seems to bring out the best in Vladine Biosse.
Facing the toughest test of his career, Biosse (13-1-1) fought what might’ve been his best fight, out-slugging and out-working veteran Joey Spina (26-3-2) in a 78-74, 78-74, 79-73 unanimous decision win Thursday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Twin River Casino to retain his New England super middleweight title.
Nicknamed “Mr. Providence,” Biosse won the highly-anticipated intrastate showdown by landing the cleaner, harder punches and beating the “K.O. Kid” at his own game. Spina’s power – he entered the fight with 18 knockouts in 26 victories – was supposed to be the decided factor, but it was Biosse, arguably the more athletic of the two, who looked every bit like the knockout artist.
Biosse had gone 1-1-1 in his previous three bouts, including a knockout loss to Denis Grachev last May and a dra...

Spina & Biosse ready for battle, weigh-in results for Thursday’s Twin River card

Reigning New England super middleweight champion Vladine Biosse has a bone to pick with whoever came up with the title, “Up For Grabs,” for tomorrow night’s long-awaited showdown at Twin River.
“I earned that title in my first fight on ESPN two years ago,” Biosse said Wednesday in reference to his win over Joey McCreedy in July of 2010 on “Friday Night Fights” at Twin River. “There’s nothing up for grabs tomorrow night.”
The truth is Biosse (12-1-1, 6 KOs) will be defending his title and his reputation as “Mr. Providence” when he faces fellow Providence native Joey “K.O. Kid” Spina (26-2-2, 18 KOs) in the eight-round main event of Thursday’s show at the Event Center, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports.
Both fighters made weight Wednesday with no issue; Biosse clocked in at the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds while Spina – traditionally a light heavyweight – came in at 167 ½.
“We trained hard for this fight,” Biosse said. “I und

Spina predicting early KO against Biosse

‘He can’t match me’ Confident, trim Spina predicts knockout against Biosse in Thursday night showdown
He worked the mitts flawlessly, each punch sending a message.
Showing off his lean, muscular physique, Providence’s own Joey “K.O. Kid” Spina turned heads at Saturday’s open workout at the Twin River Casino while promising to finish his opponent, Vladine Biosse, in grand fashion Thursday night.
“Fourth-round knockout,” Spina said defiantly. “I just don’t think he’s up to my ability.”
Spina (26-2-2, 18 KOs) will face Biosse on Thursday, May 24th, 2012 in the eight-round main event of “Up For Grabs,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I., the second installment of the 2012 Thursday Night Fight Series.
In addition to Biosse’s New England Super Middleweight Title, bragging rights will be on the line as both fighters enter the ring representing their hometown of Providence.
For Spina, his biggest concern

Spina & Biosse ready for Providence battle royale on May 24

The city Jimmy Burchfield has worked tirelessly to keep on the forefront of the boxing community is up for grabs, and two of Rhode Island’s brightest stars are ready to take the crown.
Vladine Biosse (12-1-1, 6 KOs), dubbed “Mr. Providence” due to his strong following in Rhode Island’s capital city, will defend his New England Super Middleweight Title on Thursday, May 24th, 2012 against Providence’s Joey “K.O. Kid” Spina (26-2-2, 18 KOs) in the eight-round main event of “Up For Grabs,” presented by Classic Entertainment & Sports at the Twin River Event Center.
“This is the biggest local fight to hit the Ocean State in more than a decade, and there’s no place we’d rather be than the beautiful Twin River Event Center,” Burchfield said. “These are the kind of fights the fans want to see, and I credit both fighters for being willing to put their reputations and careers on the line in front of what will undoubtedly be a sold-out crowd.
“The name ‘Up For Grabs’ is fitting, bec
