Robert Guerrero lobbied for Floyd Mayweather for two years

Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero will attempt to hand Floyd "Money" Mayweather the first loss of his professional career when they face off on Saturday, May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. While it has yet to be seen whether Guerrero's faith can will him to victory as he has recently claimed it will, it is evident that determination has guided him to the biggest fight of his career.
While it's not a surprise that Guerrero has earned the opportunity to face Mayweather, the proven pound-for-pound and pay-per-view king, it might surprise even the most dedicated boxing fans to know just how long Guerrero lobbied for this opportunity.
Editor's Note: Robert Guerrero was twice quoted on ProBoxing-Fans.com in interviews predating all of the below, one in April 2011 and one in June 2011, mentioning his desire to land a fight with Floyd Mayweather.

Tijuana beats Toluca to top table

Tijuana edged Toluca 1-0 in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday to move into the No. 1 spot in Mexico's Apertura championship after 12 rounds.

Colombian Duvier Riascos' 54th-minute strike helped Tijuana to the victory and to 27 points in the standings, one ahead of Toluca.

Riascos took possession on the edge of the penalty area, slalomed past two defenders and drove a shot into the bottom corner from a tight angle to give Tijuana the winner. Toluca finished the match with 10 men after Sinha was sent off in the 74th minute for a second yellow card.

On Saturday, Chivas defeated America 3-1 in a match featuring Mexico's most popular clubs. Both teams are now in the playoff race.

Rafael Marquez Lugo scored twice in the second half for Chivas, including a left-footed strike from 25 yards to finish off the scoring in the 68th, to seal the victory against bitter rivals America.

Marco Fabian headed in to put Chivas in the lead in the 36th, with Juan Carlos Medina equalizing for America four minutes la

Chivas pulls off shock America win

Rafael Marquez Lugo scored twice in the second half as Chivas caused a surprise in the Apertura by winning 3-1 at Club America.

Club America had a chance to go third in the table at the start of the day but were left in fifth place.

Marco Jhonfai Fabian put Chivas ahead with a close-range header in the 35th minute, cancelled out five minutes later when Juan Carlos Medina showed smart footwork and a precise finish.

Chivas came out strongly in the second half and Marquez was rewarded in the 59th minute for a purposeful run when his strike took a deflection and wrong-footed Hugo Gonzalez.

His second goal was all his own work, and a stunning strike, as he turned well and curled a left-footed shot from 25 yards over Gonzalez from a starting point to the right of goal. Chivas climbed to eighth place with their win.

Leon remain third but had to settle for a point at Pachuca, drawing 1-1. Matias Britos put Leon ahead in the 38th minute and substitute Raul Meraz levelled on the hour. Pachuca had Jorge Hernandez s

Toluca retains top spot in Mexico

Toluca drew America 1-1 on Sunday to remain undefeated in first place of Mexico's top division after seven rounds of matches in the Apertura championship.

Carlos Rodriguez slotted in a penalty in the 71st to earn the point for Toluca, but America played most the game with ten players after Jesus Molina was sent off for a high challenge in the 38th.

America had taken the lead in the 67th from Rubens Sambueza, who took advantage of an error by Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

In the day's other game Puebla drew 1-1 with Chivas.

Jesus Chavez put Puebla into the lead in the 32nd minute, heading in from a corner.

But youngster Luis Morales equalized with a diving header in the 82nd in his second appearance in the first division.

Floyd Mayweather’s 5 most exciting fights

Of boxing's big two, Floyd Mayweather is probably the better boxer. Pacquiao is easily the greater gladiator, but it's Mayweather who has made defeating every single man he has ever been in the ring with save one (see below) look easy.
Yet that very dominance limits Mayweather's appeal. Whereas Pacman can attract diehard non-Filipino fans because he delivers all the action a boxing fan could ever want, I often suspect the only real reason anyone supports Mayweather is because he always wins. Only a lover of boxing's technical purity could possibly find Pretty Boy's style exciting, a point that excludes all casual fans of the sport. That makes finding truly hair-raising, heart-pounding fights in Mayweather's 43-fight resume a little tricky, but a handful of events stand out.

Maurice Hooker and Maple Avenue Boxing Gym fighters score 3-0

Photo by Stacey VerbeekIt was a good night for boxing in Arlington, Texas last night, and Standing 8 Promotions delivered the goods for the true boxing fans of the metroplex. Fans were treated to seven exciting fights on the card and the main event was the perfect ending to a great evening of boxing. It all happened in the Arlington Convention Center right down the street from the Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers may have been swinging bats, but inside the convention center, fists were flying.
The main event turned out to be the climax of the evening when Dallas’ Jesse "the Dallas Kid" Lara (16-3,10KO’s) took on Don Mouton (11-4-1,9KO’s) of Houston, Texas. Although Lara came into the ring looking out of shape, he can take just about any punch that you throw at him. Although somewhat shorter than the chiseled Mouton, Lara stood his ground and came to fight. Despite the height advantage, Lara withstood everything Mouton had and at times shrugging off some huge punc...

Top 10 best super featherweights of all time

Ten Greatest Junior Lightweights in Boxing History
Situated between featherweight and lightweight, it might surprise some that junior lightweight is the oldest division outside of the original 8 weight classes. Johnny Dundee first captured world title honors at this weight back in 1921. After a less-than-two decade run, the division fell into a state of disrepair, not emerging again until the 60’s.
But since then, 130 has been a hotspot for boxing talent. A look at this top ten reveals that many greats have made 130 their home. Some have stayed here to make a career, while others have used it more as a pit stop. It can make ranking the fighters difficult, considering that only bouts contested at the weight are factored into these rankings.
Since the late-70’s, junior lightweight has gone from sizzling to mundane many times. As of this writing, the division is in one of its lulls. But if history shows us anything, it’s to not sleep on 130. Time and again, this division has risen fro...

It was a quick night of fights at the Fort Worth Convention center at the latest edition of Paulie Ayala’s “Guns and Guitars” professional boxing on Saturday night but it was very exciting for all in attendance. The main event between middleweight contender Brian Vera (20-6) and Taronze Washington (14-16) did not dissapoint. Under his new trainer, Ronnie Shields, Vera showed a different side of his boxing game. Known as a brawler and hard puncher, this time under the tutelage of Shields, Vera showed his boxing style of throwing his jab and following up with his right hand. In the first two rounds, Vera was throwing his jab confidently and following up with a hard right hand as the quick Washington counterpunched and moved around the ring. Vera was even smiling at his opponent as they traded punches in the ring. Vera then stepped up the action and started landing harder punches as Washington would get in quick short punches but with no effect. At the end of the second,Washington got ...
