Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Abner Mares preview & prediction

Fight Pick & Preview: Abner Mares vs. Daniel Ponce de Leon
On the chief supporting bout to Mayweather-Guerrero, WBC Featherweight Champion Daniel “Ponce” De Leon takes on Abner Mares. De Leon scored an upset by stopping Jhonny Gonzalez for the belt in September. The unbeaten Mares, meanwhile, is gunning for a title in his third weight class, previously holding belts at 118 and 122 pounds. This should be a heck of a fight.
I think both men are underrated. De Leon, 32, had been largely blown-off until showing what he still had left against Gonzalez. Mares, while unbeaten, is finding it difficult to crack into the upper-pantheon of championship-level fighters. The winner of this fight will give his career a big boost and be in line to accomplish something truly significant.

Ponce De Leon, Maidana, Santa Cruz with big wins

Daniel Ponce De Leon claimed Jhonny Gonzalez's WBC featherweight title with a unanimous technical decision Saturday night when their bout was stopped in the eighth round because of a cut over Gonzalez's eye.

Marcos Maidana stopped Jesus Soto Karass 43 seconds into the eighth round of a thrilling, back-and-forth welterweight bout on the undercard of Saul ''Canelo'' Alvarez's 154-pound title defense against Josesito Lopez.

Leo Santa Cruz also defended his IBF bantamweight title by stopping veteran Eric Morel, who quit on his stool after the fifth round.

Ponce De Leon (44-4) posted an impressive comeback win over Gonzalez despite a big cut of his own on his skull. Gonzalez had won 12 straight fights, claiming the featherweight title in April with a decision over Elio Rojas.

But Ponce De Leon, a Mexican who fights out of the Los Angeles area, is among the sport's most reliably entertaining fighters, from his long braided hair and colorful trunks to his heedless fighting style.

The official Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez weigh-ins were held on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas. Right here, you can find the complete Canelo vs. Lopez weigh-in results, including the complete weights for the Knockout Kings card, a collection of photos and notes from the event, and much more.
Canelo Alvarez-Josesito Lopez Weigh-In Pictures

Official Weights
Canelo vs. Lopez

Canelo Alvarez: 154 lbs
Josesito Lopez: 153 lbs

Of course, it's no surprise that Canelo is the thicker, more muscular guy. It's Josesito's first fight here, after only a brief stint at welterweight. But what is interesting is that Josesito is eye level with Canelo, and maybe even a hair taller.
Gonzalez vs. Ponce De Leon

Jhonny Gonzalez: 125 lbs
Daniel Ponce De Leon: 125.5 lbs

Gonzalez vs. Ponce de Leon could be the fight of the night on any of Saturday's cards. Both guys look to be in great shape, with Ponce looking more muscular, and Gonzalez of course taller an...

Top 10 hardest punchers in boxing today

For sheer drama, excitement and exhilaration, there are few, if any, spectacles in sports that can compare to witnessing the sudden, stunning and memorable ending that comes with a one-punch knockout. Below is a Top 10 list of today’s heaviest-handed hitters compiled by renowned boxing historian and Showtime analyst Steve Farhood.
Farhood’s Top 10 Hardest Punchers in Boxing Today

Credit: Will Hart - HBO

1. Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO’s): The purest right hand in the game. Just ask welterweight Mike Jones, who in June was ahead on points when Bailey exploded with a straight right in round 10, and a fight-ending right uppercut in the 11th round. Bailey’s hook can be devastating as well. In 1999, he won his first world title on Showtime with a 41-second left hook knockout of Carlos Gonzalez.
2. Jhonny Gonzalez: History tells us that rangy, long-armed fighters can be devastating punchers (Thomas Hearns and Bob Foster, for example). Mexico’s Gonzalez has carried his power from ban...

Fight Preview: Donaire vs. Nishioka
In a hardcore boxing fan’s delight, PFP stalwart Nonito Donaire takes on longtime 122-pound standout Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan at the Home Depot Center on October 13. Any argument as to who is the world’s best junior featherweight comes down to three men--Donaire, Nishioka, and Guillermo Rigondeaux. The winner of this fight will become the de-facto top dog at 122. Rigondeaux will still be there with a claim, but in terms of ring accomplishments, Donaire and Nishioka are already ahead of the Cuban star and a win here puts one of them clearly at the pinnacle of the division.

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Daniel “Ponce” De Leon Fight Preview and Pick to Win
On September 15, Jhonny Gonzalez defends his WBC Featherweight Title against ex-titleholder Daniel “Ponce” De Leon at the MGM in Las Vegas. This bout will take place as the main supporting bout to the Alvarez-Lopez fight and promises to offer some excitement, as these two skilled battlers go at it.
It’s fortunate that on an undercard, we get to see a title bout between these two standout Mexican veterans. Each man was formerly a titleholder at a lower weight class and their combined 80 knockouts underlies the power-punching menace they each bring to the ring. They also share in common the fact that they have both been written off, only to rebound in a big way.
