The Blood Is The Life: 25 Of The Worst Gashes In Boxing, Part I

Jim Watt TKO12 Sean O'Grady, 1980

Sean O'Grady is likely best known for boxing commentating and interviewing on FoxSports and USA's Tuesday Night Fights in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but once upon a time, he was actually a fighter -- certainly not a bad one, but he struggled against just about anyone with any sort of discernible class. And against WBC lightweight titlist Jim Watt, his skin gave in to the old stereotype about Irish boxers' skin -- that is, that it spews forth crimson when even gazed upon. By most accounts, O'Grady was doing quite well against Watt before the stoppage, pounding left hooks to the champion's eyes and drawing first, second and third blood by way of three gashes around Watt's eyes. But the WBA title wasn't in the cards.

The AP said from Glasgow via the Plain Dealer, "Then, in the 10th, a dramatic change of fortune left O'Grady bleeding profusely from a severe cut low on his forehead, just above t...

Ricky Burns blasts out Kevin Mitchell in 4 rounds

For what seems like forever, the names of Ricky Burns and Kevin Mitchell have been interlinked. As super-featherweights they were earmarked as youngsters with success up ahead, but their paths somehow refused to cross. Last night they finally tangled as experienced, world-rated lightweights at the Glasgow SECC Arena. It was a raucous night, one yours truly was fortunate enough to attend, and an experience I will not forget.
Saturday night actually saw two important British boxing bills as, in addition to Scottish lightweight champion Ricky Burns defending against talented Englishman, Kevin Mitchell, young Northern Irish prospect Carl Frampton tested his metal against seasoned former world title-holder, Steve Molitor. The end result was happiness on both sides of the North Channel. This week I round up all the action from both cards as the sport enjoyed its time in the British spotlight and shone for all the right reasons.

Punctured: Head Clash Lets Down Rendall Munroe Against Scott Quigg

Rendall Munroe picked up a puncture at the Manchester Velodrome on Saturday in pursuit of Scott Quigg’s junior featherweight Lonsdale belt. After a brace of nip-and-tuck rounds, an on-form Quigg launched a hard right at Munroe in round 3 that the veteran blocked with his gloves, yet, as the Leicester man dipped down and to his right, he collided with the top of Quigg’s head and trashed his right eye. A long, deep and jagged cut burst open along Munroe’s brow, plastering his face with blood to end matters at 0:43. The result was a technical draw.

Munroe (121 ½) was livid, yet replays revealed the collision to have been wholly accidental. At 32, Munroe now faces an uncertain sabbatical as he bids to patch himself up for another run at the British champion. Quigg (121 ¾) can feel equally aggrieved. Despite the fact Sky’s punditry team had already made up their minds that Munroe would know too much for the Bury upstart, Quigg had landed the more precise punches in the opener and ma...

Ricky Burns seeking homecoming glory & biggest win yet against Moses

BRAVEHEART BURNS AIMS FOR HOMECOMING GLORY
Ricky Burns could move a step closer to becoming a national sporting hero, if he is able to defeat tricky Namibian challenger Paulus Moses in his first defense of the WBO Lightweight title.
The 28-year-old from Coatbridge will be fighting in front of a sold out, partisan crowd of over 6,000 at Braehead Arena in Glasgow and is expected to win and win convincingly, after his phenomenal performance against Australian Michael Katsidis in December last year.

However, if Burns is to succeed in his homecoming bout, he must not underestimate the 33-year-old Moses who is a former WBA champion himself. In 2009, Moses went to Japan to outpoint local fighter Yusuke Kobori for the title. However, he lost it to Venezuelan hitman Miguel Acosta, who overpowered him and knocked him out in the sixth round. That remains the only loss of Moses’ career.

Dyah Ali Davis trying to fight way out of father Howard's Shadow
Super middleweight contender "Dangerous" Dyah Ali Davis (20-2-1, 9 KOs) is fighting his way out of the long shadow cast by his father, Howard Davis Jr., who captured a gold medal and was selected Outstanding Boxer of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.
Dyah had hoop dreams until realizing in high school that he wasn't heading to the NBA. Despite his pedigree, he didn't even think about boxing until he was 23, after watching the Lennox Lewis-Vitali Klitschko fight, which convinced him that he should become a prize fighter.
