Joan Guzman to face Vincente Mosquera for interim strap in May

Acquinity Sports has announced that an agreement has been reached regarding an Interim World Boxing Association super lightweight title fight, featuring a pair of past world champions, Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman and Vincente "El Loco" Mosquera, tentatively scheduled for May 31 at a venue to be determined.

Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs), a 1996 Dominican Republic Olympian now living in Miami, suffered his first loss as a professional this past November, dropping an eighth-round technical decision to Khabib Allakhverdiev for the WBA championship (Danny Garcia is the WBA Super 140-pound champion). Guzman suffered a knee injury when he was tossed to the canvas, leading to the fight being halted by the referee Luis Pabon.
Guzman's promoter, Acquinity Sports, requested an immediate rematch with Allakhverdiev, based on the mishandling of the event by Pabon. Instead, the WBA granted an Interim title fight between WBA #5 Guzman and WBA #9 Mosquera, a...

3 punch combo: Vazquez vs. Gesta, Joan Guzman gets what he deserves, & more

In this week’s three punch combo I will first preview what should be a very interesting bout on next week’s pay-per-view undercard between Miguel Vazquez and Mercito Gesta. Next, I will look back at last Friday’s WBA Super Lightweight Championship fight between Joan Guzman and Khabib Allakhverdiev. And finally, take a critical look at the televised undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout fight on Showtime.

Previewing Miguel Vazquez vs. Mercito Gesta

The eyes of the boxing world will be on Las Vegas on Saturday for the fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. On the undercard there is an interesting matchup between Miguel Vazquez and Mercito Gesta for Vazquez’s IBF Lightweight Championship.
One of the reasons I find this bout to be so intriguing is that we should learn a lot more about Mercito Gesta. There are some in boxing who think Gesta is a top prospect and has the potential for stardom. Since he is a southpaw from the Philipp...

Allakhverdiev captures vacant title

Russia's Khabib Allakhverdiev won the vacant World Boxing Association super-lightweight title on Friday, beating Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic on a technical decision.

Guzman, the former two-division champion, fell to canvas as he tried to avoid a punch in the eighth round at the BB&T Center. Guzman gingerly walked to a corner, favoring his left leg, but informed referee Luis Pabon he wanted to resume the fight.

Allakhderviev (18-0) quickly pursued Guzman (33-1) and landed a left to the head that appeared to have knocked down Guzman. Pabon didn't rule it a knockdown, but Guzman told Pabon and his trainer, Herman Caicedo, he could not continue fighting because of the leg injury.

Judges Michael Pernick and Mark Streisand had Allakhverdiev ahead, 76-75, at the time of the stoppage. Judge Nelson Vazquez was scoring the fight for Guzman, 76-75.

Allakhverdiev scored with two straight rights and a left hook to the head that sent Guzman to the canvas in the third round for the fight's only

The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Miguel Cotto, David Price And Joan Guzman

It seems appropriate to head the schedule with a “Gangnam Style” video, since the Korean pop sensation became YouTube’s most viewed video ever this week with 831 million views. We’re all terribly sick of it, but that Christmas lights display is pretty cool. Now let’s forget it ever happened, which we were probably going to do anyway.

There’s quite a bit of televised boxing on this weekend, and a lot of it has potential for fun. Miguel Cotto is always fun, which is why we love him so. But apart from that there’s Joan Guzman in an entertaining, tough match-up (WTF), some British heavyweight fights and a lot of low level, high entertainment potential stuff on the Spanish networks.

Migel Cotto vs. Austin Trout, Saturday, Showtime, New York City. Tim will have a proper, full length preview of the week’s biggest fight later in the week. I love to chuck in my two cents, though, so I will. Cotto (37-3, 30 KO) is going to be way too much for Trout (25-0, 14 KO) in this junior m...

Fan favorite Cletus Hebrew Hammer Seldin returns on Saturday at Westbury Wars

Long Island fan favorite Cletus 'The Hebrew Hammer" Seldin returns to the squared circle this Saturday night, OCTOBER 13 in the eight round co-main event at Star Boxing's "Westbury Wars", a sensational evening of world class professional boxing at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury.
Sporting an unblemished professional record and known for his show stopping knockouts, the 26-year-old Seldin, 8-0-0 (5KO's), will clash with Chicago based spoiler, Carl 'The Assassin" McNickles, 8-3-0 (6KO's).

Speaking upon his return from training camp in Florida, Seldin was very enthusiastic about his upcoming fight in the iconic venue.
"It's my first scheduled eight rounder and just like my last three bouts, I hear that McNickles will truly test me and won't be an early knockout victim," said Seldin. "I haven't seen any tape of him, I've just heard that he likes to fight in the middle of the ring, which is exactly ...

With 18 KOs in 20 fights, cruiserweight Santander Silgado is boxing’s best kept secret

Meet Undefeated Cruiserweight Sensation Santander "Demolition Man" Silgado
Undefeated Colombian cruiserweight prospect Santander "Demolition Man" Silgado (20-0, 18 KOs) is the best boxer in the world few American boxing fans have heard of, at least until March 24 when he'll be showcased on the off-NBC Sports Network portion of the Zab Judah-Vernon Paris card at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn.
Silgado, now living in Brooklyn, will be fighting in the United States for only the second time in an eight-round bout against veteran Willie Herring (13-9-3, 4 KOs). The 26-year-old Colombian power puncher stopped Glen Williams by second-round TKO last December in a New Jersey club show.

Silgado-Herring will be taped live and aired the following day on SportsNet New York ("SNY").

Joan Guzman Upends Jesus Pabon With Little Difficulty, Ed Paredes Stops Manuel Leyva

ESPN's boxing department rolled the dice a bit in plugging undefeated junior welterweight Joan Guzman into one of their main event slots -- a subject that has been liberally covered. If some guys bring outside baggage into fights, one can only assume the posse surrounding Guzman in the Hollywood, Fla. ring was there to tow his matched luggage of weight-making mishaps, layoffs and style thinning. But neither the series of weight issues nor ring rust prevented Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman from dominating and stopping Jesus Pabon on Friday Night Fights' main event last night. So dominant was the 7th round KO win, that it bordered on aggravating by the time he was able to finally land the big shot he'd been looking for all night. The Mike Tyson comparisons are a reach at this point, but to ride it out, this was more of a "Bonecrusher" Smith performance than a quick stoppage of Michael Spinks.

Early in the 1st, it appeared as if Pabon might be...

Joan Guzman, Who Once Battled The Scale, Now Battles Father Time

In the wake of Adrian Broner's blistering stoppage of Eloy Perez last week on HBO, plenty of speculation has been tossed about as to who will take over the role of boxing's next big star. Comparisons have been made, respected figures have offered their opinions, and round and round we go. It seems a couple of times a year boxing fans get the "next best thing" hard sell by some network or promoter. We know the pitch: This guy has hand speed, punching power and skills, and his career is pointed in the right direction. The reality is that, more often than not, these fighters simply cannot live up to the hype -- even if that's not necessarily a terrible thing. At one point, Dominican on-again, off-again contender Joan Guzman was can't miss in terms of promotion and reputation. "Little Tyson" Guzman, 31-0-1 (18 KO) and 1 no contest, is currently battling the clock in his latest bid to make a more significant dent in the space-time continuum of ...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Wladimir Klitschko, Joan Guzman, Fernando Montiel And ...

Just like Blake Anderson, we're nice guys at TQBR. So nice that we bring you the schedule even when there's virtually nothing on. Not unless you're a Klitschko beatdown enthusiast/German, which is pretty much the same thing anyway. The younger Klitschko is fighting former cruiserweight Jean-Marc Mormeck, who really has no business in the ring with him. Serial fat man Joan Guzman continues his junior welterweight “comeback” on ESPN on Friday, while slightly faded junior featherweight Fernando Montiel eats Jorge Arce's Indonesian leftovers in the form of Angky Angkota. Nasi goreng is probably tastier. Other happenings include junior lightweight fringe contender Vicente Escobedo fighting on TeleFutura and Pongsaklek Wongjongkam fighting in his first mismatch of 2012. What an occasion.
