Joe Calzaghe claims ‘he would have beaten’ Andre Ward

Former undefeated super middleweight titlist Joe “The Pride of Wales” Calzaghe told Sky Sports he would have handled WBA, WBC and The Ring super middleweight champion Andre Ward had they ever fought. A southpaw who Ring Magazine rated as a top ten pound-for-pounder from 2006 through 2008, Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs) retired after earning a unanimous decision victory over a shopworn Roy Jones in November 2008. “I would have beaten Ward,” said Calzaghe, 41, a Welshman considered by some analysts the preeminent super middleweight ever. “Like I say, people can judge styles, but I can adapt to every style and … Continue reading →

Tyson Fury Makes A Princely Mess Of American Debut

Tyson Fury, the Manchester traveller who represents Ireland as a boxer, delivered such a ham-handed performance on his American debut that it felt almost exploitative. It was an indecorous display that left those deemed associates through living in the same geographical area blushing on his behalf. It felt like packing your children off to relatives for the weekend only to learn that they’d neglected their table manners and broken an heirloom.

Of course not everything converts from pounds into dollars. British institutions such as soccer, tea, Oasis, Robbie Williams -- Tesco even, have all failed in their quest to “crack” America. The U.S. remains a capitalist playground that can flip provincial hits into global brands. An appealing boxer, though, generally crosses over. If you can fight then you’re all right. British ex-pats generally represent HM and the Crown without incident: Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan and Carl Froch -- while not quite James Bond in ...

Roy Jones looking forward to Scotland event in May

Legendary four weight world champion, Roy Jones Jr, will make his first visit to Scotland on May 8th to discuss his illustrious career and renew ties with Welsh superstar, and former adversary, Joe Calzaghe, in a high profile dinner show.
“I insisted my team get me to Scotland because I’ve never been there,” said Jones. “Over the years I’ve met many of my Scottish fans but unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to fight there, so this reunion with Joe is the next best thing.”
Fans in attendance, at the Dalziel Country Club in Motherwell, will be privileged to witness this historic occasion in which two of the finest fighters in boxing history meet for the first time since their famous world title bout which took place at Madison Square Garden on November 8th 2008.
On that night Calzaghe survived a first round knockdown to secure a unanimous decision victory and both men left the ring with mutual respect following twelve rounds.

Joe Calzaghe & Roy Jones taking the stage for May 8th event in Scotland

Former two weight world champion Joe Calzaghe has revealed he is coming back to Scotland on May 8th for a dinner show in which he will take center stage with former opponent Roy Jones Junior, during which both fighters will discuss their careers and answer questions from the crowd. This will be the first time both fighters have come face to face since there fight in November 2008, and will be the only opportunity to see them both on the same dinner show in the UK this year.
After a successful career, in which he racked up a mammoth 46 wins in both the Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight division Calzaghe's only professional fight in Scotland came with a points victory over Kabary Salem in October 2004.
Although he racked up a points win, he does regret not fighting in Scotland more ,“As a professional you have to be prepared to travel to fight sometimes, and my career gave me some mammoth nights to fighting Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas to beating Mikkel Kessler in the Mille...

Carl Froch-Yusaf Mack final presser quotes

International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Carl "The Cobra" Froch (29-2, 21 KOs) has warned challenger Yusaf Mack (31-4, 17 KOs) that he will pay for his pre-fight jibes when the pair meet Saturday, headlining the "True Brit" pay-per-view event (in the U.S.), live from Nottingham, United Kingdom.
Mack appeared live on Ringside after the first press conference for the clash and called Froch, "a fake Joe Calzaghe." The pair came face-to-face again at yesterday's press conference at the Capital FM Arena, and "The Cobra" told the challenger that he will "face his wrath" in his ninth consecutive World title fight.

"I was just letting him know that he said too much when my back was turned and it might be inside his mind that I'm a bit wound up," said Froch, a huge 1-18 favorite by Betfair to retain the title and 1-4 to do so inside the distance. "I just wanted him to k...

James Toney vs. Joe Calzaghe fantasy fight

In the latest boxing fantasy fight from ProBoxing-Fans.com, we take a look at two of the best super middleweight fighters in history: James Toney and Joe Calzaghe.
My current labor of love is an alternate history novel, and one thing I've learned in working on my book is that any good alternate history needs to remain within the realm of the plausible. So how can we put James "Light's Out" Toney and Joe "The Italian Dragon" Calzaghe into the same ring together?
The Backstory
Following his embarrassing defeat to Roy Jones in November 1994, James Toney searched his soul and realized the reason he lost so badly that night was that he let the hunger in his belly overcome his hunger for victory. He was a gym rat, and in particular loved mastering the skills of boxing, but he loved cheeseburgers and pizza just as much. He was only 26 years old, and if he could have laid off the junk food, he should have had no trouble in making the 168 lbs weight lim...

British boxing rivalries: The fiercest, best (and worst) of them all

There is nothing in sport that quite matches the adrenaline shot that is a boxing rivalry. A sport of merciless violence by its very nature, the only way to amplify the heat inside the ring is to add personal dislike. British boxing has had rivalries aplenty over the years, and is right now overflowing with potential high-publicity, quality match-ups that could once again force the nation to sit attentively around their television screens.
Over two parts I will discuss some of the most spiteful British boxing rivalries, both in the recent past - which I will detail here in Part 1 - and in the contemporary field, which I will discuss in Part 2.
Benn and Eubank set the benchmark
During the 1990’s, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank accosted each other in the ring on two separate occasions. In both matches, what followed can only be described as hate-fueled war between two of Britain’s most accomplished fighters of their generation.
As personalities, they were polar opposites. Eubank’s self-r...

Wales wants fitting Speed tribute

Wales coach Osian Roberts says the squad are desperate to produce a performance to honour Gary Speed's memory when they face Costa Rica in the game dedicated to their late manager tonight.

The Cardiff City Stadium clash marks the first time Wales have played since Speed died in November, and is set to be a hugely emotional occasion for those involved with the national side.

Roberts, who was brought into the Wales set-up by Speed, will be in charge tonight as new manager Chris Coleman takes a background role.

With regular captain Aaron Ramsey unable to play through injury, Craig Bellamy, who was particularly close to Speed, will lead the side.

And while Roberts admits the circumstances are difficult, he believes his players are desperate to put in an excellent performance to ensure Speed's memory is honoured with a victory.

"The circumstances are difficult not just for Craig but for all the players," he said.

"But everybody is keen to get out there and perform to the best of their

Cleverly slowly raising his profile

Wales is a small country, usually in the shadow of its English neighbor, but in terms of boxing, every now and again a genuine world-class exponent of the noble art makes a mark on the hardest of professions.

In recent times, Joe Calzaghe's name is thrown in as the obvious example. A fighter who was able to finally obtain the acclaim internationally to match the fervor the fans in his homeland brought. Older Welshmen would probably point to other boxers, Howard Winstone or Freddie Welsh, as even greater, in times where world titles were harder to come by. Tougher men in tougher times.

Twenty-four-year-old Nathan Cleverly (23-0, 11 KOs) is the latest Welsh world champion. After compiling an amateur record of 32-4, he turned professional at the age of 18. Nothing unusual in that, except that he also continued with a mathematics degree at the University of Cardiff which was duly obtained in August 2010. The fact that he's a boxer with a higher education and his surname is a tabloid writer's dream h

Manfredo wants to be more than contender

In 2004, rising light middleweight prospect Peter Manfredo, Jr. vacated his NABO title belt to participate as a middleweight in boxing's newly created reality television show called "The Contender."

He was one of the early favorites to win the tournament-style competition before being upset and eliminated by then-unheralded Alfonso Gomez in the show's opening bout.

As luck would have it, Manfredo would get an opportunity to get back into the competition again when one of the show's other contestants was medically disqualified. Making the most of the chance, Manfredo put together a three-fight win steak, including a revenge win over Gomez, to put himself into the show's final bout.

Again the favorite, Manfredo was upset by Sergio Mora in the championship finale. Five months later, he again lost to Mora in the rematch, this time by controversial split decision. So, while Manfredo had proven he truly was a contender in the sport he loved, he didn't quite show he could be anything
