Mean Joe Greene defends Suh

Hall of Fame defensive lineman “Mean” Joe Green tells the Detroit Free Press that Ndamukong Suh needs to keep playing his way (Credit: Presswire) Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has had been accused of playing dirty during his NFL career. Suh’s reputation was damaged further when he stomped on a Green Bay Packers player during the team’s 2011 Thanksgiving match-up. Despite, the accusations of dirty play, one former NFL player has some advice for Suh, keep playing your way. Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman “Mean” Joe Greene spoke to the Detroit Free Press about Suh’s playing style. “He is a powerful man,” Greene said of Suh. “Unfortunately for him is that he’s letting some of this notoriety and publicity get in his head a little bit. By that I mean it changes the way he approaches the game, cause if he changes that he’s not Ndamukong anymore. And you need an edge to play in the pit. Anybody that talks about what you shouldn’t do hasn’t been in there

Ryan Clark Thinks Steelers Held Off One-Upmanship Attitudes As Long As Possible

On Monday, the legendary Joe Greene retired from the Pittsburgh Steelers organization and Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talked to him by phone after the announcement had been made. During his talk with Greene, the Hall of Famer told Bouchette how he thought money, and more specifically, the one-upmanship attitude that players have today, in his opinion, is ruining the Steelers.

"The scary thing is that players have a one-upsmanship about money; they sign a contract and they like it until someone signs a bigger one and now they don’t like it," Greene told Bouchette. "I don’t Read more [...]

Ryan Clark is a Perfect Example of the Today’s Athlete

I’m just going to go ahead and get this out of the way. I’m old school. I’ve had my face mask grabbed by coaches. I’ve done suicides on a basketball court to the point of vomiting and I also learned valuable lessons about being a teammate, a leader and putting things other than myself first.
Obviously this is the reason I struggle so much with the majority of today’s athletes who seem far more interested in promoting themselves than they do their team. Such is the way now in the world of free agency and social media.
Therefore, I shouldn’t be upset by Ryan Clark, safety of the Pittsburgh Steelers, constantly trying to get his face on television up at the Worldwide Leader of Self-Promotion, errrrrrr, Sports. If anything, Clark should be praised for his upfront personality and his honesty about what he dreams of doing in his post-football career but to what length?
Clark is spending this week in front of many cameras and microphones whether on different ESPN programs or on ESPN Radio....

On Monday, Hall of Famer Joe Greene retired from the Pittsburgh Steelers personnel department and I couldn't help but think about the story in the Jan 28, 1969 edition of The Pittsburgh Press following the selection of Greene in the first round of the NFL draft. The fan reaction almost reads like modern day tweets on Twitter following a draft. I don't know who the author of the piece was, but it very well could have been the late Pat Livingston or the late Les Beiderman. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know. Below is a reprint of the article.

Greene retires from Steelers job

Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famer Joe Greene is stepping down from his role in the team's player personnel department.

Greene announced his retirement on Monday. He had spent the past nine years as a special assistant for pro and college personnel for general manager Kevin Colbert. The 66-year-old Greene says he enjoyed his time scouting for the Steelers and will miss working with the organization.

Greene served as the cornerstone of Pittsburgh's ''Steel Curtain'' defense after being taken in the first round of the 1969 NFL Draft. He earned four Super Bowl rings with the Steelers and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987 following a 13-year career.

Steelers president Art Rooney II called Greene an ''inspiration'' to the franchise throughout his playing and coaching career.

Steelers Legend Joe Greene Retires From Front Office Job

Joe Greene today left his third job with the Steelers for a third time, and it looks as though this retirement will be permanent, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The Steelers announced that the Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman has retired after nine years working for Kevin Colbert as a special assistant for pro and college personnel.

Voted by fans the best player in their history and considered their most important by team chairman Dan Rooney, Greene played all 13 of his NFL seasons for the Steelers after Chuck Noll made him his first draft pick as their coach in 1969 from North Texas State.

"When I played, our success was based on the people there -- the players, coaches and front office -- and I felt the same way when I was in scouting," Greene said in a Steelers press release "The people were very important to me, brought me along and made me feel comfortable, and I thought we made a pretty good team together.
“Mean” Joe Greene Retires From Steelers Player Personnel Department

One of the most beloved Steelers legends, Joe Greene, or ‘Mean Joe’ as other players called him during his playing days, has chosen to retire from the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. Greene was a member of the Steelers’ player personnel department for nine years as a special assistant to General Manager Kevin Colbert. In 1984, Greene was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after a stellar career with the Steelers as one of the best defensive tackles in league history. His time with the Steelers began in 1969 when he became the number one pick in the NFL Draft, and joined Chuck Noll’s team. Greene played in the NFL at defensive tackle for an amazing thirteen years and when he retired from the game as a player, spent time with CBS Sports as an analyst. From 1987-91, Greene worked as the Steelers’ defensive line coach. His love for the game continued as he coached the defensive line with the Miami Dolphins (1992-95) and Arizona Cardinals (1996-03). “There are very few pe...

Greene was drafted by the Steelers with the fourth overall selection in the first round of 1969 NFL draft out of North Texas and of course was part of the four Super Bowl winning teams of the 70's.
Mean Joe Greene Commercial To Be Re-Done...By Downy?

I'm sure most of us have seen this commercial, probably multiple times. But on Sunday, we're going to be seeing Mean Joe Greene again...only he won't be shilling Coca-Cola.
Downy, you know, the fabric softener company, is bringing Greene back for a commercial during Super Bowl Sunday. Instead of getting a bottle of Coke, Greene will instead be getting a bottle of Downy Unstoppables, and taking a whiff.
Advertising industry, why must you bastardize history? When I think of Mean Joe Greene and Super Bowl commercials, I think of him chugging a Coke, and throwing his jersey to a young child. I am absolutely, positively never going to recognize him as "the guy in the Downy commercial." Furthermore, why would Downy decide to use him in a commercial? I'm willing to bet that the percentage of men watching the game that also buy fabric softener is low, and that the percentage of women who are watching the game and buy fabric softener and ALSO recognize Joe Green...
