British Lionhearts & Ukraine Otamans dominant in WSB quarterfinals action

Lionhearts enchant fans with close to perfect victory over Mexico (4-1)
Having lost only once in a very promising night at London's York Hall, the British have taken a good option against the Guerreros in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarter-finals. Wins for Andrew Selby, Joe Ward, John Joe Nevin and Joe Joyce sealed the win to continue the Lionhearts strong home form.
Opening proceedings at Light Heavyweight (80-85kg), Irishman Joe Ward has not disappointed his fans who were expecting an easy way out against Albanian Mexico Guerreros Christian Demaj. Controlling the fight from the first to the last second, Ward has had absolutely no doubt during the five rounds, winning each and every one of them in the opinion of the three judges.
The Lionhearts were therefore leading 1-0 but the scenario was completed reversed in the second bout. At Middleweight (68-73kg), another Irish impressed the expert public of the York Hall with Guerreros Conrad Cummings dominating Aston Brown. If ...

British Lionhearts led by Selby, Nevin & Ward host Mexico Guerreros Friday in WSB quarterfinals

The Iconic York Hall is expected to be the theatre of some amazing battles this Friday, March 22 when Great Britain host the Mexico Guerreros in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) quarterfinals. The impressive Lionhearts roster - Andrew Selby, John Joe Nevin, Aston Brown, Joe Ward and Joe Joyce - will give its very best to take a serious advantage before travelling to the Americas next week.
The evening will start at Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) with Irish counterpuncher Ward, a boxer already capable of beating anyone in the World despite his tender age (19). Very patient, he's always waiting for the best opportunities to land his heavy punches. Defending European Champion, Ward has so far one four of his five WSB outings and will therefore be the clear favourite when he battles with Albanian southpaw Christian Demaj (0-2).
It is difficult to predict anything from the Middleweight (68-73kg) fight between Scotland's orthodox Brown and Irishman Conrad Cummings. Brown has so far ...

World Series of Boxing (WSB) is delighted to confirm that Irishman John Joseph Nevin will compete this third season with the British Lionhearts. The explosive 23-year-old Lightweight (57-61kg) will be taking to the ring to face Branimir Stankovic from Croatia in his first outing for his new team on Friday, November 23, at Celtic Manor in Cardiff (Wales).
It promises to be an electric battle between two sumptuous boxers who went head-to-head last season in an absolute epic.

The record-breaking orthodox boxer made history by becoming the first Irishman to collect medals at two AIBA World Boxing Championships before ensuring national hero status in his homeland with a sensational silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Over the last two seasons, he was an integral part of the French Franchise Paris United, helping them claim the WSB Team Trophy in Season I. With his heroics at the Olympic Games, expect the stylish 23-year old orthodox fighter to ...

Amir Khan reacts to John Joe Nevin’s decision to remain amateur

Irish Olympian John Joe Nevin has reversed his decision to turn professional opting instead to remain in the amateur circuit, as was revealed as we discussed his inclusion on the British Lionhearts World Series of Boxing team.
Super Fight Promotions were made aware of this late last night by his representative Lynn Hunter who revealed his planned participation in the WSB tournament, and while they are disappointed by his decision, would like to sincerely wish him the very best of luck if he feels this is the best choice at this point in his career.
Amir Khan, founder of Super Fight Promotions, said: “It’s disappointing that John Joe will be staying amateur as I firmly believe that he has the potential to make big waves in the professional scene. Nevertheless, I respect his decision to represent the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing and do not rule out the possibility of working with him in the future.”

John Joe Nevin, London 2012 silver medalist, signs with Amir Khan’s Super Fight Promotions

Super Fight Promotions is delighted to announce the signing of London 2012 Irish Olympic silver medalist John Joe Nevin.
The 23-year-old who dazzled at last summer’s Olympic Games, only missing gold in the final to Luke Campbell after a closely edged 14 points to 11 thriller, becomes the second capture of the newly formed promotional company, launched by British boxing ace Amir Khan.
As a bantamweight star with an excellent amateur background, including five national senior titles and two bronze World Amateur Championships, he has long been tipped to make a successful leap into the professional game.
Nevin now joins Khan’s younger brother Haroon as the latest name to join Super Fight Promotions, which boasts the well respected promoter Dennis Hobson as a partner in the company, with the Irishman set to make his debut on January 19th at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester.
Khan has been tracking the Mullingar native for a while and it was his performances at this summer’s Olympics which r...

Campbell wins bantamweight gold

Luke Campbell and John Joe Nevin scrapped through 21/2 remarkably even rounds, their British and Irish fans getting more uneasy with every blow.

And then Nevin walked into a big right hand from his British opponent.

Nevin ended up on his back.

Campbell ended up with a gold medal, largely on the strength of that one spectacular punch.

The British bantamweight fought back tears in the ring after the final verdict made him an Olympic champion. Campbell beat his rival 14-11 Saturday night, securing Britain's first gold in his weight division since 1908.

"I won. Can't believe it," Campbell said. "That's what was going through my mind. It's a day I've dreamed of for a long, long time."

Campbell's solemn, teary rendition of "God Save the Queen" in front of his adoring fans had little in common with the other four gold-medal celebrations at ExCel arena.

Ukrainian heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk put on a show that overshadowed even his 14-11 victory over Italy&#3

Britain's Campbell edges Nevin for boxing gold

Luke Campbell of Britain won the bantamweight gold medal in the Olympic boxing tournament Saturday night, knocking down John Joe Nevin of Ireland midway through the third round of a 14-11 victory.

Campbell thrilled the roaring home crowd before bursting into tears in the ring.

Campbell won the rubber match with Nevin, his friendly local rival. Nevin beat Campbell soundly in their first meeting three years ago, but Campbell edged Nevin on a tiebreaker at the world championships last year.

Nevin, a two-time Olympian who knocked off world champion Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba, fell just short of winning Ireland's second men's boxing gold medal - and just the 10th gold medal in Ireland's Olympic history.

Defending champion Zou Shiming of China narrowly advanced to another gold-medal bout with a tiebreaker victory over Ireland's Paddy Barnes on Friday in the first of 20 semifinal fights in the Olympic boxing tournament.

Bantamweight John Joe Nevin of Ireland stunned top-seeded Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba 19-14 to advance to the final against Britain's Luke Campbell, who beat Japan's Satoshi Shimizu 20-11.

Ukraine light welterweight Denys Berinchyk and Mongolia's Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg put on perhaps the best fight of the tournament, with the relentless Berinchyk rallying from a second-round deficit to score a jaw-dropping 17 points in the third round of a 29-21 victory. Berinchyk will face Cuba's Roniel Iglesias in the final.

Irish, Ukrainian Boxers Win Big: Olympic Men's Boxing Semifinals Part One

Ireland, the Ukraine and the hosts were the big winners in the first session of Olympic men's boxing Semifinals Friday in London. Ukrainian sluggers Oleksandr Usyk and Denys Berinchyk booked their tickets in must-see gold medal bouts while John Joe Nevin continued the Irish fairytale started by Katie Taylor. Nevin will now face Britain's Luke Campbell for a gold medal in a surefire bantamweight barnburner in front of a passionate crowd. The only rub on the night was the final, strangely scored heavyweight bout between two boxers, Teymur Mammadov and Clemente Russo, who shouldn't really have been there. Ah well, you can't win 'em all, unless you're from Azerbaijan (which Mammadov's loss showed isn't even true!).
Olympic boxing semifinals results session 1: Ireland’s John Joe Nevin upsets Lazaro Alvarez & much more

The early results are in from the men's Olympic boxing semifinals morning session at the ExCel Arena in London. In half of the men's divisions, the gold medal match has been decided, and the bronze medals have been awarded. Take a look at the full results for the first session right here, highlighted by a great performance by Ireland's John Joe Nevin, as he upset the highly touted Cuban Lazaro Alvarez Estarda to advance.
As mentioned, there was a ton of great action today, and two of the busiest teams were the Cuban boxing team and the Irish boxing team (the British and Ukrainian squads also had multiple participants). For the latter, Paddy Barnes was meeting Shiming Zou in a highly anticipated Light Flyweight rematch. Barnes surged in the late round to make what appeared to be an easy win for Shiming into a very tight call. The scores were read as 15:15, and Shiming Zou advanced via countback.
Those two squads met head-to-head when the Bantamweight division gold medal ...

Olympic boxing protests quickly rejected

Siarhei Karneyeu lingered in the ring after his Olympic heavyweight loss, crying and shaking his head in disbelief after his clutching, holding opponent got a narrow victory.

When Cuba's Jose Larduet fell victim to a similar decision about 15 minutes later, the Belarusian came back up the fighters' tunnel and intercepted Larduet on the way out of the ring, holding up Larduet's hand as the real winner.

Both Karneyeu and Larduet felt cheated by their opponents' clutch-and-grab tactics in the Olympic boxing tournament Sunday night, but amateur boxing's governing body disagreed.

After Belarus and Cuba immediately protested the losses, AIBA swiftly conducted reviews Sunday night, rejecting both protests about 90 minutes after the last bout.

Azerbaijan's Teymur Mammadov beat Karneyeu on a tiebreaker despite constantly tying up Karneyeu in the second half of the fight, and Italy's Clemente Russo beat Larduet 12-10 with a similar strategy to close the first round of quarterfinal bouts

Paris stun Milan to win quarterfinal first leg
In the much anticipated showdown between last year's champions Paris United and the classy Italian outfit Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder, there were some riveting encounters between two of the most exiting teams in this season's WSB competition. It was a real nail-biter right until the very end but once again home advantage made the difference in this one.
After failing to make weight, Geoffrey Dos Santos was unable to present himself for the Bantamweight contest, giving Milano the walk-over and the early advantage in the tie. Irish record breaker John Joe Nevin quickly restored parity with a hard fought victory in the Lightweight battle after dominating 21-year-old Serbian National champion Branimir Stankovic. Nevin has been in fine form this season, extending his unbeaten record to three wins no losses, but this triumph did not come easy with Stankovic mounting a strong fight back.
