Pros Pick: Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen at UFC 159.

By Jorge Hernandez.
Before the main event gets underway this Saturday night (April 27, 2013) in Newark, New Jersey with the championship on the line when Light Heavyweight sensation Jon Jones meets the strong wrestling game of Chael Sonnen.
With a victory for “Bones,” he will be tied with Tito Ortiz all-time title defense record if he can crash some strong elbows and stop Sonnen this Saturday. Lets check what the pros have predicted the UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen pay-per-view (PPV) headliner.
Dan Henderson (29-9), coming off a closely contested match with Lyoto Machida that resulted in a split decision win for “The Dragon,” Dan Henderson is on a mission to regain top contender status with a big win over Rashad Evans in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, reported to take place later this year at UFC 161. “Hendo” is a training partner of Chael and won’t count him out until the bitter end.
“Everyone thinks Jon Jones is gonna walk through him but I think Chael definitely has a good shot at beat...

Henderson vs. Melendez: The pros predict the main event of UFC on FOX 7

By Jorge Hernandez
UFC on FOX 7 will go down this Saturday, featuring a compelling clash between the Former Strikeforce Lightweight kingpin Gilbert ”El Nino” Melendez and the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion Benson “Smooth” Henderson for the 155-pound title in San Jose, California. The main card will be broadcast free on FOX.
Before the champ and challenger face off inside the Octagon, lets see how the pros predict the main event unfolding this weekend. Who better to listen to than professional fighters who have done this time after time?
Former two-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir will face off with undefeated Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier for the co-main event, also free on FOX. Mir has been a UFC fighter since 2001 and believes the champion will still be “Smooth” on Saturday night.
“I think Gilbert is super tough, great Fighter. But, I think Benson Henderson… I think people are gonna start believing he’s really as good a...

Pacquiao and Alvarado looking to meet in October.

By Jorge Hernandez.
Marquez? Mayweather? Bradley?
What’s next for “Pac-man” after suffering his first knockout loss since 1999 coming at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez?
When thinking of what’s next for Mike Alvarado after a sensational stand-up war and upset win over Brandon Rios for WBO Light Welterweight gold, many fans might what to see a third and final fight between Rios and Alvarado, but it looks like that fight can wait as Top Rank seems to be making other plans.
In other news, just got word Denver’s own @MileHighMike303 has agreed to fight Manny Pacquaio in October!!!!!!
Alvarado and his manager Henry Delgado are flying out to negotiate a contract tomorrow. Alvarado-Pacquaio in October.
I asked Delgado about Alvarado-Rios III. He said that can wait. This is Manny Freaking Pacquaio.
Talks of Marquez-Bradley have been in the mist already. Also, Pacquiao wants a chance to retrieve his belt, but Marquez apparently doesn’t want to face Pacquiao again now that he’s made the Fili...

Gustafsson calls out Machida; The Dragon’s manager wants none of it.

By Jorge Hernandez.
When mainstream mixed martial arts touched down in Stockholm, Sweden for the second time for UFC on Fuel TV 9 earlier this month, the marquee fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Gegard Mousasi was advertised as a match with title implications on the line, for “The Mauler”.
But unfortunately, Gustafsson was cut in the final days of training and the Swedish Athletic Commission wouldn’t allow him to perform.
Gustafsson said once his eye heals, he either wants a title-shot at 205 — or Lyoto Machida — who just defeated Dan Henderson at UFC 157 to determine the number one contender for “Bones” Jones’ belt.
This is where things get mixed up.
Now Lyoto Machida’s manager claims the fight has already been scheduled, and that it is impossible for Chael Sonnen to win at UFC 159 later this month.
“Lyoto is on stand-by list waiting for the winner of Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen. I think it is almost impossible for Chael to win this bout but anything may happen. A fight is a f...

Dana White speaks on talking with Andre Berto on fighting in the UFC

By Jorge Hernandez
UFC President Dana White spoke about his recent conversation with professional boxer Andre Berto about fighting under the Zuffa banner.
“It is true, we bumped into each other one night in Los Angeles, and you know, he’s a tough guy, he’s a fighter and he said, ‘You know, man, I would love to try this UFC stuff.’ I said, ‘Brother, you better work on your wrestling, you know?’ I don’t know, it was just talk and I know he’s talking about publicly right now, but who knows, we’ll see what happens.”
So the boss man has already entertained the idea of bringing the do-or-die boxer into the Octagon. While White confirms there was a discussion about the boxer testing his mettle in MMA competition, Berto’s already set to fight this summer (July 20, 2013) opposite Jesus Soto Karass.
So don’t expect to see him sporting the smaller mittens anytime soon.
The question is, can Andre Berto bring a good brawl to the UFC? I’d say give him the right matchups — much like they do w

Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum almost did not try out for TUF

By Jorge Hernandez
This past weekend’s man of the hour was Kelvin Gastelum, who managed to bulldoze through the hype of Uriah Hall with a heavy wrestling attack. Gastelum speaks about how he originally thought of hanging up the gloves prior to his appearance on Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 17.
“I was sitting in my office one day and seen the ad… I was like “I guess I’m gonna go try out, see what happens’ … Because before that I was struggling. I was about ready to quit MMA for a while and just get another job, I wasn’t doing so well financially.”
Well, thankfully he decided to try out, because he is now sporting a custom made Harley Davidson motorbike and a six-figure contract.
Gastelum also eyes a future in a lower division and it would be beneficial for him — he does not have the most imposing frame at only 5’9″ and 185 lbs, though controlling his much larger opponents with relative ease nonetheless. Kelvin will be a welcome addition to the Welterweight division with only one Conten

Dana White spoke to Andre Berto about fighting in the UFC

by Jorge Hernandez
Thirty fights into his boxing career (28-2), Andre Berto has remained optimistic about his future in more than one combat sport.
When asked how far he can get in MMA, Berto answered: “I know a lot of the basics. So don’t be surprised…I talked to Dana White about this last time I seen him. So don’t be surprised if I try to get in that and win a title. Then I’ll be the first fighter to win a boxing championship and a UFC mixed martial arts world championship. So don’t be surprised if that happens.”
While he’s not sure how well his standup approach would convert over to the UFC. Berto would be a welcome addition to a lower division as the smaller fighters in MMA are never really focused on sheer take downs, they give the audience a little bit of everything.
Maybe Berto’s in your face boxing style can be adjusted easily to keep up with UFC fighters? Andre’s brother Edson Berto has had a good number of professional fights, so he’s definitely a good close training part...

Jon Jones Not ruling out any options of a way to finish Chael Sonnen at UFC 159

By Jorge Hernandez
Jon “Bones” Jones is the youngest fighter to win a title in the UFC and it has stayed snug in his grasp since he obtained it just over two years ago. The young 25-year-old and the self-proclaimed gangster Chael Sonnen have been going head-to-head on this current season of the Ultimate Fighter: “Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen,” where both coaches seem to be on the same page with not much trash talk. It has been one of the better seasons in recent years.
Both coaches would have met back at the UFC 151: Jones vs. Henderson event that eventually went up in flames after an aggravating knee injury forced Henderson out of the bout and “Bones” without a dance partner. Chael Sonnen was the only man to take the fight, but it was Jones who turned it down unexpectedly, which lead to the first ever cancelled event in the promotion’s history.
Jones eventually admitted that his coaching staff told him it would be the worst decision he’s ever made. So why exactly did “Bones” take a r...

Tyson Fury wants Wladimir Klitschko and will “rip his heart out and take his belts”

By Jorge Hernandez

Don’t be scared, homie! Heavyweight Tyson Fury has been vocal about his desire to beat up any man in his weight division including UFC Champion Cain Velasquez, and now he has some not so kind words for Wladimir Klitschko.
When asked why he feels they’ve yet to meet in the ring, he responded, “I’ll give you a straight answer, because Wladimir Klitschko is scared to death of Tyson Fury. He knows in his own mind and his heart he can’t beat me.
The 6’9″ Tyson Fury against the 6’6″ Klitschko would surely be an intriguing clash as they are two of the most towering fighters at Heavyweight. Fury had more to say about Klitschko “The problems that these other guys have had is they’ve **** themselves before they go in there. They don’t really want to fight when they feel a bit of power and they see fifty-thousand people roaring in Germany, they sort of be a little chicken and want to get out of there, but with me it’s the total opposite. I’m gonna go there in his backyard

Martin Kampmann says he would love to beat Nick Diaz’s ass

By Jorge Hernandez
“The Hitman” is looking for an opponent to stand and slug so how about the southpaw Stockton native, who just appeared in this past weekend’s title matchup, Nick Diaz? Both fighters are known for using their striking approach plus both have extremely tough, never-say-die fighting styles and always bring much tenacity into the Octagon.
Diaz is the man with the chip on his shoulder, but it’s Kampmann who sounds a bit irritated with the Nick Diaz episode.
“I don’t listen to much of what that guy says, most of the stuff that comes out of his mouth doesn’t make sense anyway. I don’t take any notice to that.”
After the doors closed at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada after UFC 158, Nick Diaz dropped to number six in the Welterweight rankings while Martin Kampmann is just below him, sitting in the seventh spot.
This is what Kampmann had to say when asked about a possible showdown with Diaz:

'Air Jorge' leads North Torrance into Northwest Final

Hes been called "The Ringleader," "Air Jorge," but most of the time, just, simply Jorge.

North Torrance head coach Todd Croce said hes going to tell people his quarterback is going by a different name these days.

"I told him I was going to tell people that his last name was Air-nandez not Hernandez," Croce joked.

It would certainly be befitting of North Torrance senior quarterback Jorge Hernandez Jr. and one that hes grown into, literally.

He grew up loving football and especially the position of quarterback, but as he went through his first season in high school as the signal caller for the North Torrance freshmen, he knew at the time his days as a quarterback were numbered.

The numbers were against him. He stood just 53. Responsibilities of the quarterback like making reads and seeing over the line became increasingly difficult on the field with high schoolers.

I was like seven yards back from the center because all of my linemen were bigger than me, Hernandez said.

He grew up loving football - especially the position of quarterback - but as he went through his first season in high school as the signal caller for the North Torrance freshmen, he knew his days as a quarterback were numbered.

The numbers were against him. He stood just 5-3. Responsibilities of the quarterback like making reads and seeing over the line became increasingly difficult on the field with high schoolers.

I was like seven yards back from the center because all of my linemen were bigger than me, Hernandez said.

Chivas pulls off shock America win

Rafael Marquez Lugo scored twice in the second half as Chivas caused a surprise in the Apertura by winning 3-1 at Club America.

Club America had a chance to go third in the table at the start of the day but were left in fifth place.

Marco Jhonfai Fabian put Chivas ahead with a close-range header in the 35th minute, cancelled out five minutes later when Juan Carlos Medina showed smart footwork and a precise finish.

Chivas came out strongly in the second half and Marquez was rewarded in the 59th minute for a purposeful run when his strike took a deflection and wrong-footed Hugo Gonzalez.

His second goal was all his own work, and a stunning strike, as he turned well and curled a left-footed shot from 25 yards over Gonzalez from a starting point to the right of goal. Chivas climbed to eighth place with their win.

Leon remain third but had to settle for a point at Pachuca, drawing 1-1. Matias Britos put Leon ahead in the 38th minute and substitute Raul Meraz levelled on the hour. Pachuca had Jorge Hernandez s

Allen Iverson Nearly Accepted Offer to Play in Venezuela

by Ryne Nelson / @slaman10
Jorge Hernandez was certain Allen Iverson would put basketball on the map in Venezuela—up until last night. Hernandez, co-owner of Guaros de Lara in the Venezuelan League, was to introduce Iverson today as the team’s new point guard. Playing alongside Smush Parker, Iverson would bring unprecedented attention to Guaros.
“Everything was ready for his debut on Wednesday,” Hernandez tells Venezuelan sports newspaper, Lider en Deportes. But Hernandez spoke too soon.
At 9 a.m. this morning, Hernandez received a call and was told that Iverson “does not want to leave the United States.” Speculation is that Iverson’s legal problems are keeping him in US for the time being.
Iverson’s most recent return to basketball has been bumpy to say the least. The Lakers considered signing Iverson this year, but Iverson dismissed L.A. when they asked him to play in the D-League first.
Guaros reportedly hasn’t lost hope of signing Iverson, but they’re not waiting for him either...
