Spectacle, Substance: Adrien Broner Vs. Antonio DeMarco Preview And Prediction

All of Adrien Broner's preening with brushes, all of his talking in the third person, all of his weight-missing antics and Twinkie diet boasts, all of his stunts like in-ring faux marriage proposals -- it's all amusing enough, or magnetically enraging enough, or both, and it's all a part of who he is, and it's no small part of what makes him captivating, and it's no small part of why he's one of HBO's ratings darlings. But what the hardcore boxing fans have most wanted from him is to test his sublime speed and power truthfully. No more fringe contenders, no more televised mismatches. We know who Adrien Broner, the spectacle, is. We want to know who Adrien Broner, the boxer, is.

Antonio DeMarco is the answer Saturday night in Atlantic City.

And it's hard to conceive of a bad answer. If Broner creams a sturdy, determined, lightweight upon his entrance into the division, someone who's like a blown-up, better version of his last authentic chal...

Weekend Afterthoughts On Two Excellent Scraps, Jorge Linares And Ivan Calderon

It's a good weekend for boxing when the big question is, "Which of two excellent bouts was better?" My vote is forthcoming, but video at the end of the post will allow you to make up your own mind. Adrian Hernandez-Kompayak Porpramook II. The picture was a giveaway. I vote for the one with "porp." Porpramook lost the rematch of these two top junior flyweights, with Hernandez looking very good and very enormous. But these two stood and slugged it out for six rounds before Porpramook succumbed, and the referee stopped it appropriately when the Thai fighter wouldn't respond to commands. I love typing "Thai fighter" because it makes me think of TIE fighters and Star Wars is the bee's knees. Also, the goofiness of the WBC's rule about point deductions for accidental head butts never ceases to surprise.Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr.-Jonathan Oquendo. This was a close second, though. How often does a replacement fight -- Vazquez was supposed to fight...

Antonio DeMarco To Defend WBC Lightweight Title vs. John Molina September 8

Big Joe MirandaThe Oracle Arena in Oakland, California will be the site of the Antonio DeMarco vs. John Molina bout on Saturday, September with DeMarco’s WBC Lightweight Championship on the line. This has all the ingredients of an excellent high-energy bout as both fighters like to throw their hands and stay as active as possible every round. DeMarco, who hails from Tijuana, Mexico, goes into the bout with a 27-2-1 record with 20 KOs. Molina of Covina, California also has a fine resume with 24 wins against just 1 loss and 19 KOs.As you can see, both of them have quite a lot of power and this could lead to some fireworks in the ring. DeMarco impressed boxing fans around the world when he stopped Jorge Linares in the 11th round back in November 2011.DeMarco was trailing on the judges’ scorecards even though DeMarco was landing some damaging shots to the head of Linares. DeMarco then picked up the pace even more in the championship rounds and showed a fine killer instinct by stopping Linares when he had him i

This will mark the first time in the young pro career of Hargraves that he has been able to secure multiple fights in a calendar year, and he hopes the fight with Godoy isn't all that is in store for him for the remainder of 2012. “If I could get another two fights after this one, that would be good,” Hargraves told TQBR on Wednesday afternoon. “That is another reason I accepted this fight, ...

Antonio DeMarco to face Alejandro Sanabria in August in Mexico

With one of the most exciting come from behind wins in recent memory, Antonio DeMarco (27-2-1, 20KOs) is on top of the world as the WBC lightweight champion. Last October as he trailed on the score cards, DeMarco of Tijuana by way of Los Mochis, Mexico, stopped two-time world champion Jorge Linares in the 11th round of their title bout.
With the win, DeMarco realized a long life dream of being a world champion. Last March, DeMarco defended the title against Miguel “Mickey” Roman with a fifth round KO in his hometown of Los Mochis.

Earlier this week DeMarco was awarded by the Tijuana Boxing Commission an accolade for his performances outside of Mexico in 2011. DeMarco is now set to defend his title once again, now either in Mexicali or Tijuana, on August 20th against Alejandro Sanabria (32-1-1, 24KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico. Sanabria has held the WBC Silver lightweight strap.

Thompson must settle for Solis

When Sergio Thompson (22-2, 20 KOs) stopped Jorge Linares in two rounds last March, not only was it an early candidate for Upset of the Year, but it meant that the Cancun native was headed for a title shot against WBC lightweight champ Antonio DeMarco.

Then Thompson was informed by Jose Sulaiman and the WBC that what was billed as a "WBC lightweight title eliminator fight" was not a "final" eliminator and, therefore, not a prelude to a title shot.

So, instead of preparing for a July shot at gold, Thompson is taking on Argentine punching bag Juan Ramon Solis (17-5, 6 KOs) at a hotel complex in Cancun.

Solis is being sold as a fighter on a 12-fight win streak, but those 12 consecutive wins have come on the Argentina club circuit against opponents with a combined record of 80-151-10.

Thompson, himself, hasn't been in very tough. Mostly fighting on low-level cards on the Mexican beach circuit, the Linares win and a split decision loss to Uzbekistan's lightweight contender Alisher R

WBC KOs Thompson’s earned title shot

After Sergio Thompson pulled off the major upset on March 31 by stopping the heavily favored Jorge Linares, he broke down in tears. Not only had he defied the odds, but he was on the verge of a world title shot.

Linares-Thompson was billed as a WBC eliminator with the winner getting a July shot at lightweight champ Antonio DeMarco. Apparently, though, it was only an eliminator if Linares wound up the winner. When Thompson flipped the script and stopped Linares in the second round on cuts, things obviously changed.

It took a few days to find a way out of a low-profile -- therefore low-sanctioning-fee -- DeMarco-Thompson title fight, but the WBC predictably wormed its way out of its bind.

Jose Sulaiman, WBC President for Life, would inform the media on Wednesday that the Linares-Thompson bout was indeed an eliminator, but not a "final" eliminator.

"Linares was the one who lost his chance to fight DeMarco," Sulaiman would say. "Thompson was number 16 on the charts and he won overwhel

Weekend Afterthoughts, Featuring The Latest Jorge Linares Faceplant, Punching For Jesus And More

Not every boxing weekend is so all-fire important, so not every Weekend Afterthoughts need be novel-length. Let us sweep and dust about the corners and pick up the dust bunnies and dig our fingers into them. For starters, you got this video, via TQBR Schedule Maestro and Australian Bureau Chief Alex McClintock. See, Manny Pacquiao? Jesus sometimes DOES want you to punch people. Other stuff:

Jorge Linares. What can you do with this guy? You look at him and at times, he seems to be everything you cold possibly want if you were building a perfect fighting machine. Then he loses to Sergio Thompson in a bout meant to set up his latest career revival with a vengeance-driven rematch win over Antonio DeMarco. It's not as if you can write him off entirely for losing due to a cut; but then, his tendency to get so badly bloodied is a bit of a liability, isn't it? And it's not as if he was mega-badly hurt in that fight; but what is he doing going down in the first place...

Linares faces Thompson on Saturday

This Saturday from the Oasis Hotel Complex in Cancun, Mexico, Jorge Linares 31-2 (20 KO) takes on Sergio Thompson 21-2 (19 KO) in a WBC lightweight title eliminator.

Linares has more to lose on Saturday night than just the fight, as a win sends him into a rematch with Antonio Demarco, who won a bloody battle with Linares last October.

Linares has long been considered a "can't-miss" star in the sport. His blinding speed, solid power, and exceptional technique has had fans and media talking highly about the Venezuela native who has been residing in Tokyo, Japan. But despite the talent, each time Linares seemed on the brink of becoming a star, he suffered difficult setbacks that have had the same fans and media questioning his ability to rise to the top and, specifically, questioning if his chin will allow him to fulfill his potential.

Linares has fought the majority of his fights in Japan, including a victory over Oscar Larios in 2007 to win his first title, the WBC featherweight strap. He defe
