Unbeaten Mexican superstar and WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez and undefeated WBA Super Welterweight Champion Austin “No Doubt” Trout are set to square off in a 12-round, WBC and WBA Super Welterweight World Championship Unification fight on Saturday, April 20 from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas in a fight which will be televised live on Showtime Championship Boxing.
Canelo and Trout held the first leg of their three-city press tour today, and below, you'll find some opening quotes and details from the fighters and their teams.
Canelo, who started training for the fight in his hometown of Guadalajara before moving camp to Santa Monica, Calif., is already familiar his opponent’s fighting style and abilities as he was ringside for Trout’s December 1, 2012 victory over Miguel Cotto in New York and also watched Trout defeat his older brother Rigoberto Alvarez in Guadalajara in February of 2011.

Castillo vs. Cotto removed from card

The Boxing's Tribune's Kelsey McCarson has been told that the weigh-in drama surrounding Saturday's welterweight fight between former lightweight champion, Jose Luis Castillo (63-11-1, 54 KOs) and Jose Miguel Cotto (32-3-1, 24 KOs) has been confirmed. The fight has officially been removed from Saturday night's card at the Reliant Arena in Houston.

On Friday, Cotto's adviser released a statement to Boxing Scene, blasting Castillo and stating that they would not accept the fight.

Castillo, who has now missed weight four times in his career, exceeded the contracted weight limit of 145 pounds when he weighed in at 147.75 yesterday. Castillo was given a chance to make weight later, but he showed up and weighed in at 151.75 a few hours later.

Morales vs. Garcia weigh-in results: Morales overweight, forfeits title

The weigh-ins for the HBO televised Erik Morales vs. Danny Garcia fight were held today, and they didn't go without some drama and controversy. Morales was unable to make the junior welterweight limit, and apparently will have to forfeit his titles. That means that if Garcia wins, he'd take home the belt, but if Morales wins, the belt will remain vacant.
The co-feature of the evening is the exciting James Kirkland vs. Carlos Molina junior middleweight clash, and both of those guys made weight comfortably. Take a look below for complete Morales vs. Garcia weigh-in results.
Morales vs. Garcia - WBC junior welterweight title

Erik Morales 142 lbs
Danny Garcia 139.5 lbs

As mentioned, Morales wasn't able to make the 140 lbs limit. According to a Fightnews report, it did not appear that Morales was planning on losing the weight, as he began drinking water and walked away from the scene. So, it appears he'll just deal with losing the belt one way or the other, and pay som...

Living up to the old adage that everything is bigger in Texas, the March 24 HBO World Championship Boxing event featuring a hard-hitting doubleheader of Erik Morales vs. Danny Garcia and James Kirkland vs. Carlos Molina will have an undercard just as exciting as the featured fights at Houston's Reliant Arena, with former World Champion Jose Luis Castillo squaring off against longtime contender Jose Miguel Cotto in a ten round welterweight bout, adding another chapter to the great fistic rivalry of Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, plus a bevy of up and coming prospects doing battle prior to HBO hitting the airwaves.
Also in action on the undercard will be top Houston prospects (and twin brothers) Jermell and Jermall Charlo as well as Lanard Lane, plus Hollywood's Jamie Kavanagh and Orlando's Daquan Arnett.

Texas-sized wars on tap for Saturday

This Saturday at Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas, two fighters will be battling for redemption and two will be fighting to establish themselves as main stage attractions in a fan favorite twin bill broadcast on HBO (10:15 p.m. ET).

In the curtain closer, Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KOs), veteran four-division world titlist and future hall of famer, makes the first defense of his dubious WBC junior welterweight belt against undefeated 24-year-old prospect Danny Garcia (22-0, 14 KOs).

Morales was essentially handed the WBC belt on a silver platter after a scheduled Morales-Lucas Matthysse bout for the vacant title fell apart and the unproven Pablo Cesar Cano was allowed to step in for Matthysse. The 22-year-old Cano, suffering two badly swollen eyes, would lose the contest via corner stoppage following the tenth round.

In this coming Saturday's contest, Morales faces another young challenger in Garcia, but one who is significantly more talented and experienced than Cano.

Garcia is coming off a split-decision

Paulie Malignaggi holds out for more cash

Former junior welterweight champ Paulie Malignaggi (30-4, 6 KOs) is intent upon looking a gift horse in the mouth as he has decided to hold out for a bigger share of the purse against WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-0, 21 KOs).

Senchenko's promoter, Union Boxing Promotion, won the WBA-ordered purse bid for the bout with a staggering $1,000,100 offer to take the title contest back to Senchenko's native Ukraine.

Of that $1 million bid, Malignaggi was guaranteed $250,000 against the defending belt holder -- the amount Malignaggi's promoter Golden Boy offered for the entire purse.

The 31-year-old Brooklyn native, however, is looking for a $500,000 payday for a title opportunity that most feel the fighter never earned in the first place.

Boasting only two fights at the welterweight limit (against unranked journeymen Jose Miguel Cotto and Orlando Lora), Malignaggi, who signed with Golden Boy at the end of 2010, suddenly shot up the WBA rankings to become the organization's No.

Malignaggi gets shot at Senchenko

Thirty-one-year-old former junior welterweight titlist Paulie Malignaggi (30-4, 6 KOs), who signed with Golden Boy Promotions at the end of 2010, is reaping the benefits of being well-connected with a WBA-mandated title shot against welterweight titlist Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-0, 21 KOs).

Malignaggi, who has only fought two fights at the welterweight limit against unranked journeymen (Jose Miguel Cotto and Orlando Lora), has somehow found himself in the WBA's No. 2 slot and will be getting his world title opportunity no later than 90 days after the organization's Jan. 26 deadline for purse bids.

Senchenko, 34, has made three successful defenses of his title against marginal opposition since taking the belt from Yuriy Nuzhnenko in April 2009.

Of the two fighters, the Brooklyn native Malignaggi has the deeper resume, despite a tepid 3-2 mark in world title fights and one-sided recent beatings at the hands of Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton. The biggest career mark on the ledger of the Ukraine's Sench

Stepping Sideways: Preview And Prediction For Saul Alvarez Vs. Kermit Cintron

(Saul Alvarez, left; Kermit Cintron, right)Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is either the future of the boxing or a spoiled child, depending on who you ask. It's unlikely that the argument is going to be solved by his junior middleweight fight this weekend with Kermit Cintron in Mexico City. Not unless Cintron pulls the upset and defeats Canelo, which is an unlikely prospect. On the other bout of the HBO televised double header, fellow hopeful Adrien Broner fights in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. His opponent, Argentina's Vicente Rodriguez, is a level below even Cintron. So this is meant to be a showcase night on HBO, hopefully before both men move on to bigger and better things.

Alvarez (38-0-1) is only 21. In his native Mexico, he's already a superstar. He's getting that way with Mexican-American fans too. The problem is that he hasn't really beaten anybody of note -- unless you count allegedly beating up the Ring's number three man... at junior flyweight.....
