On this day in 1993: Cubs 6, Phillies 3

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies going from worst to first and winning the National League pennant. All season long we will take a look back at each game of the 1993 season.

	Phillies 3
	Cubs 6

	WP: Jose Guzman (2-1)
	LP: Curt Schilling (2-1)
	SV: Randy Myers (3)

The Phillies suffered back-to-back losses for the first time of the 1993 season when the Chicago Cubs handed them their first series loss of the young season at Wrigley Field. The Cubs got to Curt Schilling early and chased him in the sixth inning as they built a 6-1 lead that would be too big a hole to climb out of.

The Phillies had their opportunities though. Milt Thompson grounded out to Cubs starting pitcher Jose Guzman with the bases loaded to end the first inning and they were unable to bring Wes Chamberlain home from second base in the second inning. The Phillies managed just one run off a wild pitch in the third inning, when t...

Looking to capture their second straight series victory to start the season, the Phillies sent Curt Schilling to the mound for a businessperson's special at Veterans Stadium. As he would do so many times in 1993, Schilling delivered with a standout performance, pitching a complete game four-hitter as the Phillies used some early offense to set the pace once again for a 3-0 victory.

The Phillies struck early, taking advantage of a fielding error by left fielder Candy Maldonado. After Lenny Dykstra and Mickey Morandini were retired a the top of the lineup, John Kruk worked the count against Cubs starter Jose Guzman and walked off a full count. That was f...

Ricky Romero Captures the Spirit of the 2012 Blue Jays

There exists the idea of a kind of proof-of-concept game, that I’m rather fond of. In any individual baseball game, a player’s performance is essentially unpredictable. The range of possible outcomes spans every possible outcome, as looking at one game is no way to evaluate a player’s true talent. But it stands to reason that a guy can fluctuate around his true talent by a magnitude of only so much. Kerry Wood established in one game that he was capable of 20 strikeouts, and, say, Kirk Rueter could never have done that. Juan Pierre has had games where he’s finished with zero hits and five hits, but he’s never had a game where he finished with multiple homers or four or five strikeouts. Extreme performances are notable, because they demonstrate that a given player is capable of such an extreme performance. It’s within the error bars around his true talent.
Tuesday night, against the Tigers, Ricky Romero put together such a proof-of-concept game. Those who followed along know I don’t ...

Padres 5, Brewers 0

Jeff Suppan pitched five solid innings to win his first game since 2010, leading the San Diego Padres to a 5-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

Suppan, called up from Triple-A Tucson to start in place of the injured Cory Luebke, had not pitched or won in the majors since Oct. 3, 2010. The 37-year-old Suppan limited the Brewers to four singles, walked two and struck out two as he combined with three relievers for the shutout.

It was Suppan's first victory since a 6-1 win over Colorado as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals on the final day of the 2010 regular season.

Cameron Maybin and Jose Guzman each drove in two runs as the Padres won their first series of the season by taking two of three from Milwaukee. The Brewers have lost five of seven.

The Padres threw their second straight shutout, the first time since July 2-3, 2010, against Houston. San Diego beat the Brewers 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Ernesto Frieri pitched the sixth, Luke Gregerson threw two innings and rookie Dale Thayer pitched

The Fans and Jerseys of Wrigley

This weekend I had a bachelor party in Chicago where we went to the 3639 Wrigley Rooftop (which was an amazing place and I highly recommend) to watch the Cubs take on the Reds. With Cincinnati being only a 5 hour drive away there was a decent amount of Reds fans in attendance. Here’s some of the fans that I encountered during the day.

The award for best shirt of the weekend goes to this Kentucky Wildcats fan. As if UK didn’t have enough to cheer about because of their National Championship, why not take a jab at your step brother from the South. Awesome!

The best jersey of the weekend award goes to this Cincinnati Reds fan who was rocking a Rob Dibble jersey. I looked around for a Norm Charlton jersey but couldn’t find one.

I love throwback jerseys and this Eric Davis jersey was no exception. Did you know that in 1986 Eric Davis stole 80 bases in only 132 games? That was good enough for second in the NL behind Vince Coleman (107).

I saw the usual Chicago Cubs jerseys (Ryne Sand...

Darvish knows how to make a first impression

PEORIA, Ariz. In what may have been the most scrutinized two innings in the history of spring training, Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish made a nice first impression Wednesday. Before he took the mound, at least 150 fans gathered to watch him warm up in the bullpen.

On the other side of the diamond, Padres veteran pitcher Jeff Suppan prepared in front of at least four people. At least 200 credentials were issued by the two teams, so the modest press box was packed to the gills.

Normally in a spring training, you see players milling around in the dugout not paying too much attention to the game. But when Darvish took the mound in the bottom of the first inning, every Padres player was on the top step watching his every move. Darvish would later insist that he wasnt nervous about his first outing, but no one believed him.

Not even Daisuke Matsuzaka got this type of reception when he made his debut for the Boston Red Sox, according to Rangers public relations director John Blake, who was with Boston at the t

The BP Broadside: Bobby No Valentine for Pitchers by Steven Goldman

I just don’t think it matters much. The Red Sox apparently have their manager in Bobby Valentine, and it’s good to see one of the most active and flamboyant and active managers in recent memory get a fresh start with a good organization. Valentine was once one of the youngest managers in the game—he became the manager of the Rangers at 35—but other things got in the way, and after a ten-year hiatus that included stops in Japan and ESPN, he’ll be picking up his career at 62. He was once a young manager for a young team—Valentine’s Rangers broke in Oddibe McDowell, Pete Incaviglia, Ruben Sierra, Edwin Correa, Jose Guzman, Mitch Williams, and Bobby Witt, among others, all at once. Now he’ll be an old manager for a veteran team.

Just as Casey Stengel said that you had to have a catcher or you’d have a lot of passed balls, a team has to have a manager because—well, it’s not exactly clear at this point given win expectancy studies showing that most managers regularly botch games with
