Pedraza, Russ & Jermain Taylor score stoppage wins on Shobox

Unbeaten lightweight Jose Pedraza (11-0, 7 KOs), of San Juan, Puerto Rico, dominated late replacement Tevin Farmer (7-4-1, 1 KO), of Philadelphia, Penn., en route to an eighth round TKO in the main event Friday on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME®. Pedraza, Lamar Russ and Jermain Taylor all won their bouts via stoppage during the evening.
Pedraza, who many regard as the best prospect to come out of Puerto Rico since Miguel Cotto, began the night cautiously, using the first round to feel out his opponent and get comfortable in the ring. However, by the middle of the second round Jose found his rhythm and took control of the fight. In the third round, Pedraza enforced his will with an onslaught of punches lasting for most of the last minute of the round. Farmer, never quite recovering, was still a game opponent and continued to show his heart through Pedraza's domination.
In the eighth round and final round, Farmer threw a punch that seemed to ...

Third time is the charm for Olympic boxer Serdar Hudayberdiyev

Turkmenistan's 26-year-old former Asian Champion and AIBA World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Serdar Hudayberdiyev took on board all the advice he was given during the first phase of the AIBA 'Road to London' Program in Cardiff, Wales, earlier this year and put what he learned into practice as he captured the Olympic quota place at the AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Event Astana 2012. The gifted boxer had previously tried to qualify for the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games but was unsuccessful.

Hudayberdiyev made his international debut at elite level and showed great potential at the third Asian Olympic Qualifying Event in Karachi, Pakistan, back in 2004. He was only 17 at the time and won a contest but was eliminated without qualifying for the Olympic Games. The virtuoso Turkmen then competed in his first worldwide event at the AIBA World Boxing Championships Chicago 2007, losing in his first bout.

Like This: Three Prospects On ShoBox Tested Hard In High-Contact Victories

We got a little apocalyptic about the state of ShoBox last weekend, but this weekend's outing was a return to form -- just about everything you could want from Showtime's program for putting prospects into the toughest fights of their careers. Thomas Oosthuizen, Luis Del Valle and Jose Pedraza all had to work hard to pass those tests, and all will probably be better off for it in the long run. Oh, and all three fights were action-packed.Existential crises thrown to the backburner for the night, we can resume the usual response to a ShoBox card: What did we learn about the prospects Friday?

I'm not sure we learned terribly much about Pedraza, or at least I didn't. I was least familiar with the lightweight's ouevre coming in, and Showtime's Steve Farhood assured us that he really was tagging Gil Garcia superhard, so Pedraza's rep as a puncher wasn't affected and the chin of Garcia got its own reputation, and a good one. Intitially, I couldn't be...

Hot prospect Jose Pedraza has another strong showing in Puerto Rico

On Friday evening, a delirious crowd of more than 2,000 enjoyed eight exciting bouts on the undercard Pa 'Bravo Yo, Coliseum Salvador Dijols of Ponce.
In the main event, WBC Youth champion, at 130 pounds, Jose "Sniper" Pedraza (7-0, 6KO's), gave a recital of good boxing and looked stellar in his fight against Bahamian Anthony "Psycho" Woods (17-9, 3KO's). A dominant Pedraza would get the TKO after Woods' team threw in the towel at the 2:30 mark of the fourth round.
In total control throughout, Pedraza pressured, used excellent lateral movement, and connected with strong combinations to the face and liver area. Woods showed great heart and sporadically attacked the "Sniper", but without success.

Pedraza, fighting at lightweight for the first time said afterward, "I feel good. This was a good fight for me as I faced an opponent with a lot of experience. Now, the next step is to return to the gym and keep w...
