Abraham vs. Stieglitz II to be shown on EPIX in US, Robert Helenius in co-feature

World championship boxing returns to EPIX this month. Two- division world champion "King" Arthur Abraham will defend his WBO super middleweight crown against the former champion he dethroned, Robert Stieglitz, in a rematch of their bout from last summer. Abraham-Stieglitz II will be televised live ringside from GTEC Arena in Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany on Saturday, March 23, beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET.
In addition to the Abraham- Stieglitz world super middleweight championship rematch, the live EPIX telecast will feature undefeated heavyweight contender Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius in the co-main event.
Abraham and Stieglitz boast three world titles between them and a combined record of 79-6 (52 KOs) -- a winning percentage of 93% and a victory by knockout ratio of 66%.
Abraham (36-3, 28 KOs), a native of Armenia who lives in Berlin, certainly lived up to his ring name, King Arthur, when he ruled the middleweight division as an undefeated world champion. H...

Lazlo Papp: 3-time gold medalist & the champ that never was

Maybe it's because former light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion Hungarian Zsolt Erdei broke a couple of ribs and had to cancel Saturday's fight with Isaac Chilemba. Maybe it's because I'm hungry and have a hankering for my mother's goulash. Whatever the reason, Erdei's countryman and fellow pugilist, the shabbily treated and disgracefully neglected Laszlo Papp, has been much on my mind of late.
Papp (27-0-2, 15 KOs) was the first boxer to win three Olympic gold medals in a row -- in 1948 as middleweight, and in 1952 and 1956 as light middleweight. Only two other boxers (both heavyweights), Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon, can claim such successive victories.
As an amateur, Papp scored 55 first-round knockouts. Turning professional in 1957, he defeated, among 26 others, Ralph "Tiger" Jones, who once scored a victory over the great Sugar Ray Robinson. A southpaw with a devastating left hook, Papp became European middleweigh...

Stieglitz vs. Abraham set for August 25; opening presser quotes, photos

Robert Stieglitz and Arthur Abraham to fight on August 25 at o2 World in Berlin, Germany
Its official: Arthur Abraham is going to challenge WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Robert Stieglitz for his crown at o2 World, Berlin. Sauerland Event and SES-Boxing are proud to present this fight as the main event on August 25.
"I'm happy that this fight will take place at o2 World. I was hoping for another chance to show my skills in this incredible arena in front of as many fans as possible. I am looking forward to entertain them again, like I did back in 2009 with my last round knockout against Jermain Taylor," said Arthur Abraham.

Robert Stieglitz is not fazed at all with the outlook of fighting in Abraham's backyard: "That's my belt and we are going to battle for it - in the end it will still be mine. I will prove that my championship is legitimate, no matter of the opposition, time or place." And these are not just empty phrases. Stieglitz would have mo...

Sanctioning bodies look silly in Europe

Back in the 1990s, the WBO was slow to receive recognition as a "real" sanctioning body -- and that's saying something in the often skeezy world of professional boxing. The reason for the snub was due to the sanctioning body's perceived "friendly" matchmaking for its title holders.

When it comes to sketchy matchmaking, a finger could be pointed at the WBC, WBA, and IBF as well, but the WBO was especially well-known for its ability to find unqualified "top" challengers for dodgy champions in every rec center, third-rate gym and regional club circuit in the world.

Throw in the shoddiest record keeping in the industry (the WBO once ranked deceased super middleweight Darrin Morris in its top 10 -- and even bumped him up in ranking twice, post mortem) and you get some especially rotten calls, even among the filthy four of boxing's sanctioning bodies.

Over time, the Puerto Rico-based outfit cleaned up a bit, but lately it's been returning to form -- with its fellow s
