Danny Garcia sees no new improvements in Amir Khan, favors Peterson over Matthysse

Over the past two years Danny Garcia has come up from relative obscurity and slowly worked his way to the top of the junior welterweight division quietly dispatching the likes of Nate Campbell and Kendall Holt while scoring spectacular KO wins over Amir Khan, and Erik Morales. With Garcia now at the top of the heap of the division, having beaten Zab Judah, attention has turned to Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse. The winner has long been rumored to face Garcia and to be quiet honest either man would give Garcia a hell of a fight.
To Garcia though, it does not matter whom he faces, though he does favor Peterson over Matthysee both of whom fight this weekend, “It is a good even match up but I have to give it to Peterson. He is more versatile. He can box, he can bang. He is more of a banger but im sure he can move his fight a little bit.” So given that, you would think Garcia would want Matthysse to win, in order to get a less tricky man in the ring with him right? Wrong! Garcia in ...

Quick Jabs: How Not To Fight The Alphabet Belts; Mickey Bey, Kendall Holt And Other (Former?) ...

The rest of the TQBR team will have the helm for a great number of days as I take a brief vacation. But first, some Jabs that are Quick. And we will keep them quick, except the first two. We'll even skip funny pictures or videos.

The sanctioning belt gang has done some goofy/arguably goofy things lately -- ranking Amir Khan as a welterweight before he fights at welterweight, taking away the super middleweight belt of Andre Ward -- that have belt defenders in a weird kind of tizzy; where's the outrage about the first, they ask, and who cares about the second if you dislike the belts? It takes a certain kind of willful misrepresentation of those of us who are opposed to the IBFs and WBCs of the world to say we should be fighting individual bad decisions, or even that we shouldn't fight individual bad decisions. Most of us have given up arguing with the individual decisions; we know that the belt gang cannot be redeemed, so why challenge the logic of the kind of decis...

Kendall Holt vindicated, official statement

Kendall Holt has been vindicated after the rumors that he had failed a drug test following his fight against Lamont Peterson. Take a look at what Holt has to say here, including the official laboratory results.
I am pleased to announce that according to laboratory results I am not under suspicion of having taken a banned substance in connection with my bout against Lamont Peterson.
We have received an email from Dr. David Eichner, Director of the WADA accredited Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory that my results "do not suggest doping."
As explained to me, "intact HCB" indicates the use of that banned substance. A confirmatory test reflected that I did not have "intact HCB" and thus doping was ruled out in my case.
There is an atypical finding for "non-intact HCB," which, as explained to me, is naturally produced. That finding will be explored further by my physicians.
This explanation, too, was provided directly by the Sports Med...

Kendall Holt to move to welterweight & seek big fights

Former junior welterweight world titlist Kendall Holt will be moving up to 147lbs after spending the majority of his career at or around the 140lb weight limit. The move to welterweight is coming at a time in Holt's career where he is in search for the biggest fights he can possibly get. With a division like welterweight filled with named opponents and the name Holt recognized in boxing circles across the world, it is fitting that the move be made now.
Credit: Hoganphotos/ Golden Boy Promotions
Holt will prepare his body for the change and he believes that it should come more naturally than most, he feels that his body and boxing desires are directly synced up at this stage in his career.
"The time is right for me to make this transition to welterweight, I feel like I've still got a lot of fight in me and what better way to exercise it than to be in a division with so many interesting match ups. It isn't just what I want, it's also what my body is telling me t...

Top 3 opponents for Lamont Peterson after big win over Kendall Holt

Lamont Peterson successfully broke down and stopped long-time contender Kendall Holt in the 8th round of their Junior Welterweight title bout last week. It was quite an impressive showing by Peterson in what was supposed to be a very difficult fight.
Before the bout with Holt, Peterson had signed with Golden Boy in hopes of securing some bigger fights in the not so distant future. This should not be an issue given his recent performances and the quality of fighters Golden Boy has in his weight vicinity.
With this in mind, here are three likely foes for Peterson in the near future.
Lucas Matthysse
Credit: Jake Emen / ProBoxing-Fans.com
Lucas Matthysse seems to be the next logical opponent for Lamont Peterson, and the fight should be relatively easy to make as both Matthysse and Peterson are aligned with Golden Boy.
Matthysse and Peterson are each also seeking big fights. At the moment, most available top Junior Welterweights and Welterweights are tied up with their own upcoming bouts...

Lamont Peterson Retains Jr. Welterweight Belt With 8th Rd TKO of Kendall Holt

Considering that IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Lamont Peterson had been out of the ring for 14 months and it was challenger Kendall Holt’s first fight in 11 months it was understandable why there was some ring rust in the first few rounds of their title bout at the Armory in Washington D.C. on Feb. 22. The fight didn’t really come alive until the fourth round, but once it did, it was quite entertaining.
Peterson was too much for Holt though and he eventually wore him all the way down and earned a well-deserved eighth-round TKO. It was Peterson’s first bout since he was found to have synthetic testosterone in his body while failing a drug test. Peterson won the IBF and WBA title from England’s Amir Khan in a highly-controversial showdown in December of 2011 and the positive drug test resulted in the cancellation of a big-money rematch last May. The WBA also stripped him of their championship.
Holt seemed to shake off his ring rust quicker than the champion as he controlled the first three rounds eve

Battling Back: Lamont Peterson Vs. Kendall Holt Preview And Prediction

Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 makes a much-needed shift this weekend in its matchmaking from "unwatchable dreck" to "as good as the program gets" with a bout headlined by Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt, two junior welterweights with top-10 talent, both trying to reestablish themselves after long layoffs. No one's saying you ought to ignore the controversial elements involving Peterson's failed drug test last year, and we haven't. But there is a time and place for looking at Peterson-Holt solely as a quality match-up; that place is here and that moment is now, and there's a lot to like about the looks of it. Just on the competitive merits, it's a bout worth staying home to watch if you're not in Washington, D.C., and worth going out to catch live if you are in the nation's capital.

Despite layoffs of 14 months and nearly a year, respectively, Peterson and Holt are not far removed from the big leagues of HBO. Peterson's last fig...

Official Weights
Lamont Peterson: 139.4 lbs
Kendall Holt: 140 lbs
Both fights looked fit, trim and ready for the fight, and each seemed eager to get it on tomorrow evening. Adrien Broner was in attendance supporting his buddies the Peterson brothers, and he seemed to become the focal point of attention in the festivities. Also present was fellow D.C. fighter, heavyweight Seth Mitchell.

3 punch combo: What’s next for Adrien Broner? Looking ahead to Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt

In this week’s 3 punch combo, I will first examine Adrien Broner’s future coming off his victory this weekend. Next, I will state why Gavin Rees’ performance against Broner was so admirable and why is career will get a boost despite his loss.
Finally, I'll break down this Friday's IBF Junior Welterweight title fight between Lamont Peterson and Kendall Holt, which could be one of the best ESPN fights we've all seen in quite some time.
Adrien Broner’s future

Credit: Will Hart - HBO

Adrien Broner scored an impressive fifth-round TKO stoppage against Gavin Rees on Saturday night in Atlantic City. So after such an impressive victory, where does Adrien Broner go from here?
First, a lot of boxing fans are clamoring for Broner to make the leap to the deep Junior Welterweight division. However, I do not think the timing is right for Broner to make that jump.
Broner just moved to Lightweight in November, and he should get a few more fights in that division before making another ...

Kendall Holt Gets Rid Of Tim Coleman Early In Another ESPN2 Disappointment

We ought to start calling these weekly Friday Night Fights recaps "The Broken Record Column" -- at least until ESPN begins to deliver with some entertaining match-ups on Fridays. This year hasn't been a particularly stellar one for the show, to say the least. They should be thrown a partial bone this week though, as the Kendall Holt vs. Tim Coleman main event was competitive on paper. It's only fair to note that a solid effort was made to stage a halfway-enticing main event. It just didn't travel down the expected path, and, good or bad, these things happen in boxing.

One of the more troubling aspects of the broadcast though, was a large patch of vacant seats at the Morongo Casino venue, just beyond the far side of the ring. If only it were the first time promoter Gary Shaw insisted on staging a potentially meaningful fight for one of his guys at a half-empty desert casino... The opening bout of the broadcast featured an eight rounder betwixt undefeate...

Holt blasts Coleman in 2; Abraham Lopez survives tough test on Friday Night Fights

Kendall Holt made everyone's television viewing experience a little bit easier on Friday evening. Instead of juggling Friday Night Fights, Shobox and the NCAA Tournament with all of its great upsets and action, Holt made quick work out of fringe contender Tim Coleman, blasting him out in just two rounds. It's a performance that reasserts Holt's status as a player at 140 lbs.

Credit: Carlos Baeza / Thompson Boxing

Right from the start of the fight, Holt proved to be the alpha dog in the ring. Quicker, stronger and with better boxing, he was able to do as he pleased with Coleman. With Roy Jones Jr. working in his corner, the only problem for Holt on the evening was that Roy wanted him to get some rounds. Instead, Holt finished his evening with less than two rounds of action.
He first put Coleman down in the opening stanza with a wonderfully placed left hook to the body. Coleman got up, but in the second round he wouldn't see anything better. Holt would drop him seve...
