Mares goes low, but he's not dirty

Showtime's World Championship Boxing returns Saturday night as Abner Mares, the winner of Showtime's Bantamweight tournament, moves up in weight to take on Eric Morel.

The winner will claim the vacant WBC junior featherweight title. The fight is part of a doubleheader at El Paso, Texas, that also features Anselmo Moreno's WBA bantamweight title defense against David De La Mora.

The Mares-Morel winner grabs a title in an increasingly hot junior featherweight division. Should Bob Arum be willing to cross promote, that champion would make an attractive opponent for Nonito Donaire or Guillermo Rigondeaux, the WBO and WBA junior featherweight champions, respectively. Should Donaire or Rigondeaux become unavailable, the winner might be forced eventually to take on Toshiaki Nishioka, the man who was stripped of the WBC title and made "champion emeritus" and who should have first rights to the next champion.

Mares is only beginning to mature as a fighter, yet he has already captured a world t

Lullaby League: The 12 Hardest Swatters Of The Last Dozen Years

******* This Ring Magazine online... article suggests otherwise. However, likely the most spot-on idea in that piece is Joe Goossen's take on the failings of today's amateur boxing system, which slaps swollen pads onto guys' mitts and instructs referees to stop fights at the first sign of danger -- a system that tends to value good, quick-handed athletes rather than fighters. But consider that many of the fighters who seem to horde television dates fight with similarly defensive-minded styles, and they don't fight as often, or in front of crowds as big, as many of the known knockout dealers of the past. In general, the frequency issue means (or should mean) fewer fights against out-matched opponents more easily leveled, and the style issue is pertinent in the sense that spiffed up performances with more flash than bang are rewarded with television dates, and guys from other eras often weren't afforded the same luxury. And some of the big punchers of yesterday didn't have the high

Lullaby League: The 12 Hardest Swatters Of The Last Dozen Years

It's as though we can't get a solid chunk of good fights lately, and the up and down fluctuation plays hell with a fan's patience and emotions. A more consistent fight schedule would be nice. It's part of loving this game, though, and sometimes a hiatus from constant action makes the heart grow fonder. Indeed, there have been times when the the thirst for blood long since sated nudges us into viewing a bout in a more positive light than perhaps it really calls for. For instance, the one-sided (but solid) Hank Lundy vs. Dannie Williams bout from a few weeks back on Friday Night Fights wasn't bad at all. In fact, a few times the men traded and made for a very fun watch, and there was a knockdown. But it was a mostly one-sided fight, yet it still got a fair amount of attention, and still wound up making for good discussion. There will always be jubilant, adrenaline-driven peaks, and heavily depressing valleys. Just like there will always be clinching, as we&#3...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Paul Williams, Tavoris Cloud, Vitali Klitschko And Dereck ...

I'm almost as excited by the future of sport (see the above video) as I am about the boxing that's on this week. Luckily, if there's one sport that will be spared in the Taser introduction revolution, it's boxing. Boxing is already super exciting and features lots of people suddenly falling over. But imagine the boon for less fortunate and exciting sports, like baseball. Anywho, let's get to this week's fights. Paul Williams and Tavoris Cloud are making their respective returns on Showtime on Saturday night after having been out of the ring for a while. Vitali Klitschko defends his heavyweight belt against fun but rather inexperienced Briton Dereck Chisora in Germany on the same day. Jorge Arce is fighting in Mexicali (he seems to fight every couple of hours) and there are Shobox and Friday Night Fights Cards. If you so choose, you could probably pass the entire 48 hour period from Friday night until Sunday doing nothing but watching boxing. Wouldn...

2011 Boxing Comeback of the Year

Which fighter had the best comeback in 2011?
Some of the more inspirational stories in the sport are when a written-off boxer scratches and claws his way back to the top. It takes a special fighter of great resolve to conquer the uphill battle that is required to complete a successful comeback. The fact that there are so many successful comebacks in the history of boxing speaks not only to the fighting ability of the sport’s participants, but to their unyielding fighting spirit, as well.
Here are the best comebacks of 2011:
2011 Comeback of the Year: Brian Viloria
A world-class fighter for the better part of a decade, Viloria has won some and lost some en route to becoming a world champion, but one who was just as likely to lose as he was to win when facing top competition. His on again/off again run as a world titlist appeared to come to an end after a shocking 12th-round TKO loss to Carlos Tamara in 2010. Viloria’s future prospects were not helped by the fact that Viloria was hos...
