Marco Huck vs. Ola Afolabi III preview & prediction

Fight Pick & Preview - Huck vs. Afolabi III:
On June 8, WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck renews his rivalry with Ola Afolabi for their third encounter. This is Huck’s 11th defense of his title with two of those challenges coming from Afolabi. Their first fight in 2009 was a close unanimous win for Huck, while the two fought to a draw in their 2012 rematch.
Afolabi is certainly a crafty and tough fighter. He gave Huck two close fights, but what can change now? Perhaps Huck will grow complacent and become bored with the challenge of Afolabi, thus entering the ring in diminished form. Something like that could open the door for Afolabi. But if he were meant to beat Huck, it would have happened before now. The judges aren’t likely to start seeing his work more clearly and Huck isn’t likely to start phoning it in at this point.

Photos & quotes from intense Huck vs. Afolabi III presser

There is definitely no love lost. Britain's Ola Afolabi (19-2-4, 9 KOs) did say he would hug and shake hands with his opponent Marco Huck (35-2-1, 25 KOs) after their WBO Title Fight on June 8 at the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Germany – but the attending members of the press were not really convinced after the pair's previous war of words during Monday’s press conference.

Before Afolabi started his attempt to calm things down, current WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco “Captain” Huck and the Interims Titlist were involved in a heated exchange of words. The first one to trade verbal blows was the 28-year-old German.
“Afolabi is starting to get on my nerves. I beat him in December 2009. After I fought Alexander Povetkin for the WBA Heavyweight Crown, it was difficult for me to find the right motivation for my rematch with Afolabi in May last year. However, I believe that I actually won that bout, even though it was scored as a majority draw. That won’t happen again. I w...

Huck, Afolabi fight to draw

Marco Huck successfully defended his WBO cruiserweight title Saturday night when he boxed a majority draw with Britain's Ola Afolabi at the Messehalle in Erfurt, Germany.

After 12 rounds, two of the judges turned in scores of 114-114, with the third giving it to Huck by 115-113. For once, a decision in Germany made sense, probably because the three judges were from abroad.

This was a humdinger of a contest, with Afolabi (19-2-1, 9 KOs), taking the first half of the fight, and Huck (34-2-1, 25 KOs), the second half, with the two fighters sharing a 12th round that will be a contender for round of the year.

Huck was his usual self, punching in spurts, but generally allowing himself to be speared on the end of roundhouse lefts and rights from the on-coming Afolabi. Huck's nose was bloodied in the third round, and he was cut by the left eye in the sixth. Gradually, though, the Serbian-born German found a foothold in the fight as Afolabi slowed, and Huck began to land some clubbing right hands. With 20 s

Huck officially returns to cruiserweight, sets rematch against Ola Afolabi

Huck returns to cruiserweight, defends WBO Title against Afolabi:
Marco Huck (34-2, 25 KOs) will return to the cruiserweight division following last month's exciting clash with WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin. After long talks with Hall of Fame Promoter Wilfried Sauerland, coach Ulli Wegner, Team Sauerland General Manager Chris Meyer and sports director Hagen Doering, Huck made the decision to continue at cruiserweight, where he holds the WBO title.
For what it's worth, we always assumed Huck would return to cruiserweight after the Povetkin clash. Even if he had gotten the win there, it seemed as if the logical move would be to cash out with a mega-fight in Germany against one of the Klitschko brothers, and then return to cruiserweight anyway.
His next opponent will be mandatory challenger and interim champion Ola Afolabi (19-2-3, 9 KOs). Next up for Povetkin is the mandatory defensee ...

Huck: I dominated Povetkin and gave him a beating

Povetkin defends (fake) WBA Heavyweight Title against Huck: Post-Fight Quotes & Wrap-Up
In one of the most exciting heavyweight title fight in recent years, WBA Champion Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KOs) defended his belt against Marco Huck (34-2, 25 KOs). The 32-year-old Russian was off to the better start but seemed to tire when Huck hit him with huge power punches. The WBO Cruiserweight Champion had a huge seventh round, but Povetkin fought back and bruised his opponent's face in the 11th. Both fighters gave it their all in the 12th, with Huck firing in some more power shots to wrap up a spectacular encounter in style.

The judges scored the bout 116-113, 116-112 and 114-114 in favor of Povetkin.
“It was a dramatic, a very exciting and a very close fight,” Hall of Fame Promoter Wilfried Sauerland said...

Povetkin-Huck weigh-in results: weights & photos

Tomorrow in Stuttgart, Alexander Povetkin and Marco Huck will meet in a clash for Povetkin's (fake) WBA heavyweight title strap. Today, they met on the scales, and the results will have an important impact on the fight itself, as Huck is a long-time cruiserweight making his debut on the heavyweight scene, and he'll be at a significant weight disadvantage in the fight. Here are the Povetkin vs. Huck weights and photos from the weigh-in.

(Fake) WBA Heavyweight Title:

Alexander Povetkin: 229.25 lbs
Marco Huck: 209.5 lbs

EU Middleweight Title:

Dominik Britsch: 159.5 lbs
Roberto Santos: 158.75 lbs

The big issue with the Povetkin vs. Huck fight is size and weight itself, as the weigh-in figures show above. Povetkin, not a large heavyweight, outweighs Huck by 20 lbs.
Huck was the top guy at cruiserweight, but has never faced a fighter with the size and strength of Povetkin, let alone the technical skill. The last time he fough...

Povetkin retains WBA belt vs. Huck

Alexander Povetkin did just enough to earn a points decision over Marco Huck to retain his WBA heavyweight title on Saturday.

Huck, the WBO cruiserweight champion, had the undefeated 32-year-old Povetkin staggering back against the ropes in the fourth and seventh rounds, but the German was unable to deliver the telling blow.

Belgian judge Philippe Verbeke called it a draw, 114-114, but England's John Coyle and South Africa's Stanley Christodoulou awarded it 116-113 and 116-112 respectively to the defending champion.

The decision was greeted by a chorus of boos at Porsche Arena, as Huck claimed victory over his nine-kilogram(20-pound)-heavier opponent.

''He couldn't stand anymore and he's been judged champion,'' Huck said. ''The guy couldn't stand.''

Povetkin was standing after making his second defense of the title, but appeared exhausted after an engaging bout.

''I underestimated him,'' said Povetkin, who improved his record to 23-0 (1

Huck ready for Povetkin in WBA heavyweight bout

WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck of Germany insists he has what it takes to make it at heavyweight.

The 27-year-old Huck faces undefeated Alexander Povetkin for the Russian's WBA title on Saturday night.

Huck says he ''would not have taken the fight if I didn't believe in myself.''

The 32-year-old Povetkin will be making his second defense of the title he claimed by defeating Ruslan Chagaev last August.

It had been Wladimir Klitschko's title following the Ukrainian's victory over David Haye the month before, but was declared vacant when the WBA elevated Klitschko to ''super champion'' status.

The Yugoslav-born Huck takes a 34-1 (25 KOs) record into the bout. Povetkin is 23-0 (16 KOs).

Preview: Alexander Povetkin vs. Marco Huck

Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KOs) will face Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KOs) Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany. The fight will be televised live in the U.S. exclusively by EPIX. As with past boxing shows carried by EPIX, it will also stream live on EPIXHD.com. Boxing fans can sign up for the stream for free with an email address.

Povetkin is best known for a few things that aren't really high on a fighter's priority list. First, he's a heavyweight titlist ... but not really. Povetkin defeated Ruslan Chagaev in August 2011 to be something the WBA is calling its "regular" champion after having "elevated" Wladimir Klitschko, who defeated David Haye for the real WBA title, to "super" champion. All that really means is that Povetkin, while carrying around a WBA title belt, isn't the real WBA champion. Klitschko is. As such, Povetkin is not recognized as champion by this publication, though you may see him bandied around as such in other places.

Next, Povetkin is known as a pro

Take a look at this quick quotes wrap up with (fake) WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin and WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck ahead of their clash in Stuttgart on Saturday night. POVETKIN: “I prepared in my home city of Chekhov. Working with Alexander Zimin has been very good. There is a good chemistry between us and we get along very well. I am in great shape for Saturday.”
HUCK: "I had a good camp. The sparring sessions helped me to build a lot of confidence. I also expected the training for this fight to be a bit different compared to my latest title defenses at cruiserweight. However, to be honest, there was no big change leading up to ...

WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetin (23-0, 16 KOs) and WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KOs) faced the media today at the final press conference ahead of their showdown in Stuttgart on Saturday night. “I'm ready to become heavyweight champion,” Huck said.

Alexander Povetkin vs. Marco Huck Preview & Prediction

February 24 sees the return of heavyweight action in Germany, and while the belt at stake is the fake WBA strap, the match-up is an interesting one nonetheless. It sees crusierweight top dog Marco Huck move up to the ranks of the big men and challenge Alexander Povetkin, who seems to have slyly positioned himself for a run at the real crown once the Klitschko brothers depart the scene.

WBO Cruiserweight Champion, former European Cruiserweight Champion

Kapitan is a well-established figure in the cruiserweight ranks, by virtue of his two-year, eight-defense reign there. That reign saw wins over three solid contenders, including two on the current crusierweight Top Ten. His sole loss was a 12th Round stoppage at the hands of Steve Cunningham, in what was Huck's first world title challenge. That fight was a real slugfest that saw Huc...

Marco Huck to Challenge Alexander Povetkin on February 25th in Stuttgart

A very intriguing heavyweight title fight has been added to the calendar for the first part of 2012. WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KOs) will challenge the WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KOs) in Stuttgart’s Porsche-Arena on February 25, 2012. Both rivals have now struck an agreement.

“This will be the Heavyweight Fight of the Year without a doubt,” commented Kalle Sauerland. “There will be more action in this fight than we have seen in Heavyweight World Championship fights in many years. Two real gladiators with both speed and power: Huck has proven himself as the number one Cruiserweight in the world with hands of steel; Povetkin as the most exciting Heavyweight prospect seen since a young Tyson, and who last year crushed Chagaev to realise his dream of becoming World Champion. Speaking as a boxing fan who has missed big action heavyweight championship fights – the waiting is over!! I am not sure how long the fight will last bu...
