Safety spot up for grabs as Bengals open OTAs

CINCINNATI Remember those days back in school when teachers would assign work over the summer break? Despite how sure we all were that it was just a form of adult torture as they attempted to ruin our summers with reading and review, turns out they actually wanted us to be as ready as possible for that next school year.

Welcome to the start of the Bengals organized team activities. Tuesday morning, which did its best imitation of a July training camp day with its mid-80s temperature and warm breeze of humidity coming off the Ohio River, was the first day back to on-field school for the team. The Bengals return all 11 starters on offense and nine starters on defense as well as a multitude of backup players who saw significant time last season.

As quarterback Andy Dalton put it: Theres not a whole lot of teaching and getting used to new guys in there. Weve got a nice core group here. Now its just perfecting the little things.

One of those two defensive spots without a returning starter is the safety spot ne

Who Isn’t in the College Football Hall of Fame That Should Be

Recently I wrote my thoughts on this year’s class that will be inducted into college football’s hall of fame. Along with the celebratory tone that goes with such an announcement comes the analysis of who is getting in, who didn’t get in and who didn’t get in that should already be in. With that in mind, these are the players that I believe already should be in the college football hall of fame, as well as players who should forever be on the radar as far as getting into the hall of fame is concerned. This list will focus on the 80′s as it is the decade furthest in the past that I have a great deal of knowledge and have seen a great deal of the games and great players thanks to ESPN Classic and YouTube.
Raghib “Rocket” Ismail, WR/KR, Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Because he never played one position full-time is the only reason I can possibly see how this man isn’t in the hall already. All of those who follow college football either know the name or have heard the name. Because of how he...

Former USC defensive backs Mark Carrier and Dennis Thurman and end Hal Bedsole, and former UCLA offensive lineman Jonathan Ogden are among 76 players and eight coaches on the 2012 ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Carrier starred at safety from 1987-89 and won the 1989 Thorpe Award, which has been presented annually to the nation's top defensive back since 1986.

Thurman played in 1974-77 and was a two-time All-American.

Ryan says Carrier has a unique view

When it comes to knowing Mark Carrier as an assistant coach, Rex Ryan knows what he can do. Carrier was the secondary coach for Ryan when he was defensive coordinator in Baltimore in 2006-08 and then reunited with Ryan in 2010 with the Jets when as head coach he hired Carrier to coach the defensive line.
With Carrier being hired to be the Bengals secondary coach last week, Ryan thinks the two years Carrier coached the defensive line will serve him well.
“It gives you a different perspective,” Ryan said. “He can tell the secondary about what the guys are facing up front and the protections they’re getting with this many guys and how they have to hold coverage longer. He has a unique set of eyes on how it will benefit the back end.”
Ryan also said he can see Carrier as a future defensive coordinator because of his experience coaching two position groups.
Said Ryan: “He’s going to be one of the only guys that is going to be prepared to be a coordinator because he went from being a seco...

Bengals hire Carrier, promote Guenther

The Cincinnati Bengals hired Mark Carrier as defensive backs coach and promoted Paul Guenther to linebackers coach, the team announced on Monday.

Carrier comes over from the New York Jets, where he served the last two years as defensive line coach and he was previously the defensive backs coach with the Ravens from 2006-09.

The Southern Cal product was a standout safety for 11 NFL seasons, including stints with the Bears, Lions and Redskins.

"Mark is a great choice for us as he moves back to his old position, coaching the defensive secondary," said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. "He experienced success as a coach with two fine NFL defenses, and he will do very well with our group."

Guenther has spent eight years with the Bengals, coaching special teams, defensive backs and linebackers at different points though often in dual-roles.

"Paul is very deserving of this opportunity to continue advancing and to coach a position of his own," Lewis said. "Mike Zimmer (Bengals d

Bengals hire Mark Carrier as assistant

The Bengals have hired former New York Jets assistant Mark Carrier as their defensive backs coach, filling a spot that opened when Kevin Coyle went to the Miami Dolphins as defensive coordinator.

The Bengals also promoted assistant Paul Guenther to linebackers coach on Monday, replacing Jeff FitzGerald.

Carrier played safety for 11 years with Chicago, Detroit and Washington. He has spent the last six years as an assistant - four as the Ravens' defensive backs coach and the last two as the defensive line coach with New York.

Guenther has been with the Bengals in various assistant roles for the last eight seasons. He helped with special teams and defensive backs last season.

Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer interviewed for head coaching jobs after the season, but will return to Cincinnati.
