TD Garden Night at the Fights Answers Old Questions About Boxing’s Future in Boston, Poses New Ones

In boxing terms, five years is a lifetime. Fighters can make, break, re-make and re-break careers in that span of time. Fans can just as easily fall in and out of love with the sport in half of a decade.
On Saturday night, boxing returned to the TD Garden for the first time since 2007. If those in attendance — promoters, fighters and boxing fans — have their way, the Garden will host many more matches in the months and years to come.
Fans paid good money to watch New England’s finest boxers (both professional and amateur) fight at the region’s premier indoor facility. While some came for the sport itself, others came for the spectacle. Regardless of their motivation, the entire 4,200-strong crowd was treated to a full-fledged boxing revival meeting in Boston.
“Bring boxing back to Boston” was the rallying cry, but it was clear by the end of the night that boxing never left the city. While the sport may not enjoy the popularity it once did, and the new Garden doesn’t host regular bou...

Danny O’ Connor headlines at TD Garden on Dec 14

On Friday, December 14, 2012 at 'TD Garden Night at the Fights' a headline fight featuring Danny O'Connor vs. Derek Silveira in a 10-round catch weight match of 145 pounds will take center stage. Also featured will be undefeated junior lightweight Ryan Kielczewski of Quincy and Portland-trained middleweight Russell Lamour.
Framingham's light welterweight Danny 'Boy' O'Connor is looking for his 20th victory in the 10-round main event. He is a two-time national amateur champ and has a 19-1 professional record with seven KOs. O'Connor is ranked 15th in the world by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and 22nd in the World Boxing Council (WBC) rankings.
"Fighting at the TD Garden in front of all my fans is a dream that I have had since I put on the gloves," said Danny O'Connor. "Derek is a solid fighter, but also a cocky guy with lots to say. That talking isn't going to help him when it's just he and I between the ropes.&q...

5 recent fighters who I just had to hate

Top 5 Boxers I Just Disliked in Recent Boxing History
When you’re a kid watching boxing, a lot of fighters fall quite easily into the hero/villain dynamic. As we get older and become adults, we become more fans of the sport and less of individual boxers. Sure there are fighters we like and those we might not care for, but it just takes a lot more than it did when we were kids. We’re not so quick to idolize a fighter or to cast one as a villain. It’s part of growing up.
But there are some fighters who managed to evoke hate, even in adulthood. They are fighters who had to go that extra mile to get on the bad side of fans. Some of the fighters I hated as a kid actually grew on me, as I came to like them as a grown-up. Others, however, just always rubbed me the wrong way. Here are 5 fighters who I just couldn’t bring myself to like.
Teddy Reid
He always struck me as a jerk, but then there was one particular night that forever cast him as a villain in my eyes. In 2000, Reid faced Emilian...

Random Classics: Mark Breland Vs. Aaron Davis

There existed a time, not so long ago, when amateur boxing amounted to much more than an unsatisfying hors d'oeuvre to the main course of the professional ranks. It's not that amateur pugilism cannot be entertaining and fun to watch, but the current system almost seems to actually discourage action fights with quick stoppages and point per punch regulations. This current period of general disinterest in the American amateur game in particular may not last long though, as reports say the U.S. will be sending representatives for nine of 10 weight classes to the London Olympics this summer. Even so, the attention will likely pale in comparison to the 1976 or 1984 U.S. Olympic Boxing Teams. In itself, that's not an insult -- those teams were legitimately great, and boxing was still a household sport at the time. But past that, amateur boxing back then was arguably better preparation for the professional ranks than it is now. Quick stoppages and emphasis on landing pe...
