Lee Selby facing undefeated Viorel Simion on July 13

Lee Selby will face unbeaten Viorel Simion on the Betfair’s ‘The Homecoming’ bill at the MS3 Craven Park in Hull on July 13, live on Sky Sports.
The Welsh featherweight star switches from the Bolton show on June 29 to meet the Romanian on the bumper outdoor show topped by the debut of Olympic Gold medal star Luke Campbell MBE. It’s a huge night for Selby who has excelled in the last 18 months, claiming the British and Commonwealth titles in style against Stephen Smith and impressing in defences against John Simpson, Patrick Okine, Martin Lindsay and Corey O’Connell.
The 31 year old Simion won the WBC International title in July 2011 and has defended the belt successfully twice since, and Selby’s promoter Eddie Hearn is excited by the prospect of seeing Selby tested at a higher level.
“I’m delighted to have been able to bring Viorel over for this fight,” said Hearn. “It’s Lee’s first big test on the World stage and having watched Viorel in action, I think we can expect a cracking fight

Top 10 British boxing prospects – a look back one year later

Last June I published a list of what I saw to be Britain’s best ten boxing prospects, considering their achievements and potential. With almost a year having passed since, it is now apt to review exactly what these men have achieved in the intermittent period. What have they accomplished? Have they progressed or regressed? What stands in wait for them in the future? All these questions will be answered as I recap what a year has brought for some of British boxing’s hopeful superstars.
Kell Brook: Welterweight, 27 years old
WAS: 27-0 (18) NOW: 29-0 (19)
Last year I glimpsed into my crystal ball and saw great things on the horizon for Brook. Unfortunately, almost a year on and nothing has changed - those great things remain on the horizon. The good news is Brook remains undefeated. That crucial “0” at the end of a perfectly marketable resume is intact, though not without its troubles. Brook survived a war with Carson Jones, suffering a broken nose along the way. Difficulties in that...

British Beat: Anthony Crolla Prepares To Battle His Demons Along With Derry Mathews

(From left to right: Derry Mathews, promoter Eddie Hearn, Anthony Crolla)

Anthony Crolla makes his first competitive start this weekend since the night he almost killed Heywood rival Kieran Farrell. In a suffocating December brawl, the 22-year-old Farrell developed an acute subdural haematoma that threatened his life. He survived but not without consequence. Farrell lost almost a third of his brain, his career and a pitiless dream. The effect on Crolla has yet to be measured. Rarely, though, are the winners of such catastrophes able to proceed unaltered.

Former featherweight world champion Barry McGuigan confessed to pulling his punches against Jimmy Duncan after previous foe Young Ali (Asymin Mustapha) fell into a coma and later died in 1982. A tormented Chris Eubank was similarly affected against Thulani Malinga after Michael Watson only narrowly evaded death in their titanic rematch. Junior lightweight world titlist Gabriel Ruelas claimed to have been haunted by the ghost...

Day Of The Jackal: Carl Frampton Immaculate In Belfast, Knocks Out Kiko Martinez In 9th Round

If Barry McGuigan has a hint of Galileo about him this morning, then he can be forgiven. For, while it is unwise to put untiring faith behind anyone, anything in the hurt business, it is especially chancy to put such allegiance on record. In Carl Frampton, though, McGuigan has a boxer worth staking his name on. But perhaps it is time to start talking about the junior featherweight contender as a separate entity to his more storied guide.

In his toughest fight to date and against a febrile, power punching opponent that refused to let him breathe, like a child with a scabby knee, Frampton looked as neat as a new pin Saturday. Naysayers may sniff about him being hit flush on occasion, or the fact he was made to toil with his back to the strands for long periods throughout this nine-round, stardust-laden triumph, but when a man marauds after another in a confined space whirling a pair of block splitters about the place, the pursuee would need to b...

British Beat: Carl Frampton Goes For Gold Against Kiko Martinez

(Carl Frampton, left, stares down Kiko Martinez)

Twenty eight years ago this month, Irish folk hero Barry McGuigan, a boxer who, once beneath the ring lights, could unite a city at war with itself, punched out his world title credentials against Puerto Rican-born Brooklynite Juan Laporte. “The Clones Cyclone”, 24-1 heading in (the controversial loss came against Peter Eubank in McGuigan’s third contest and was promptly redressed), had collected British and European titles as a featherweight but had still to convince some of his true merit. After a bruising ten round examination at the Kings Hall in Belfast, any lingering doubts about wee Barry’s ability to take a crack from a world class operator were curtailed and within a matter of months an emboldened McGuigan had deposed the Panamanian world champion Eusebio Pedroza in London.

McGuigan’s protégé, junior featherweight Carl Frampton, has a fight on his hands Saturday evening at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena, only a short amble f...

The Highlight Reel: February, 2013

The stuff floating our boats this month…

	Patrick Connor

The last month has left a little bit to be desired for a few reasons, unsurprisingly, so I might take the road less travelled by and say that I'm actually interested in seeing how heavyweight match ups like Vyacheslav Glazkov vs. Malik Scott, Johnathon Banks vs. Seth Mitchell II and David Price (pictured at right) vs. Tony Thompson unfold. As is the case with just about any heavyweight tilt, questions remain about at least one of the competitors in each fight. How did Malik Scott go from blue chip amateur to wrecking the C-level circuit? Is Mitchell more of an athlete than a fighter? And is Thompson good enough to test Price? It's not often I even acknowledge that current heavyweights exist, but perhaps it's time to begin thinking about what a post-Klitschpocalyptic landscape looks like.

	Alex McClintock

This month I'm perversely looking forward to Australian rugby players Quade Cooper and Sonny...

British boxing 2013 mega-preview: Division-by-division overview

2013 is set to be another exciting year for British fight fans. Current world champions Carl Froch, Nathan Cleverly and Ricky Burns could all be involved in unification fights. There is also the distinct possibility of Britain adding to their three current world champions with Gavin Rees, Kell Brook and Martin Murray already scheduled to fight for world titles, and several others waiting in the wings for their shots.
Domestically there are also a number of big fights to be made including a rematch of our 2012 British fight of the year between Anthony Crolla and Derry Mathews, and super-fights between David Price and Tyson Fury, and Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton. Keep reading below for a full division-by-division preview for British boxing in 2013.

British Beat: Kevin Mitchell And Ricky Burns Vie To Become Glasgow’s Razor King; Carl ...

(Kevin Mitchell, left; Ricky Burns, right)Britain’s best match-up of the year takes place Saturday, as cockney wrong ‘un Kevin Mitchell invades Glasgow to tackle Scotland’s smiling assassin, Ricky Burns. The Dear Green Place isn’t exactly an ideal pit-stop for a fighter with a propensity for swimming at the bottom of a bottle. Nevertheless, Mitchell, who pissed away any momentum gained from his sterling effort against Manchester pressure fighter John Murray last year, is hoping that it can frame a redemptive scene that will allow him to grab a seat at boxing’s top table. Burns, meanwhile, looks to solidify his position as one of the finest lightweight boxers in the world, against a top 10 rated opponent who has long been a friend, and is now, fleetingly, a professional obstacle.

Burns, 29, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, is ranked third at 135 lbs. by Boxing News Magazine (Mitchell, 27, has been pegged at number 6 by the same publication). A hustler with a veteran’s poise, Burn...

ESPN3 to broadcast Carl Frampton vs. Steve Molitor on Saturday

ESPN3 to Present Live Exclusive U.S. Coverage of Saturday’s Frampton vs. Molitor Super Bantamweight Title Fight
ESPN3 will present live exclusive coverage in the U.S. of the Carl Frampton (14-0, 9 KOs) vs. Steve Molitor (34-2, 12 KOs) Super Bantamweight title fight from Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. ET.
Canada’s Molitor, a former two-time Junior Featherweight world titleholder, said of Saturday’s fight, “He’s (Frampton) European level and I’m world level and come fight night everyone will realize that. This is too soon for Frampton. He has never been in the ring with someone on my level. He is a good boxer, very aggressive, but he makes a lot of mistakes that I plan on capitalizing on. The plan is to win convincingly here against a young undefeated prospect and that will put me in line for a world title.”
Belfast’s Frampton said, “He’s (Molitor) said a few things about me in the buildup and he obviously likes to talk a bit – that’s fine. Al

British Beat: David Price And Derry Matthews Aiming To Become Merseyside’s Deadliest Strike Duo

(David Price, left; John McDermott, right)The Olympia in Liverpool has a busy schedule on its hands this weekend, playing host as it does to a succession of fight nights commencing Friday. Heavyweight colossus David Price and battle-torn lightweight “Dirty” Derry Matthews will be hoping to make it into the winner’s enclosure surrounded by friends, a feat which has proven problematic for the red half of Merseyside of late. In fact, so blunted has their cutting edge been in recent games, acerbic critics of the city’s most famous football club have suggested that their terrace anthem be amended to “You’ll Never Win At Home.”

Price is a 6’8” former Team GB amateur whose opponents to date (to murder a McIlvanneyism) have shown the same measure of agility as the tribute to Bill Shankly which bristles in the wind outside Anfield, albeit with less purpose. Shanks, at least, keeps his hands up at all times. After rolling over his promotional stablemate, Tom Dallas, last summer, Frank Ma...
