With England’s Martin Murray removed from the equation, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will knock Bryan Vera onto Queer Street

World Boxing News reports that negotiations between former middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and England’s Martin Murray have unraveled and the bout will not occur. The 27-year-old Chavez (46-1-1-1, 32 KOs) was tentatively slated to scrap the 30-year-old Murray (25-1-1, 11 KOs) on August 3 in Mexico City. Chavez last exited the squared circle in September as a unanimous decision loser to The Ring and WBC Diamond middleweight king Sergio Martinez. Similarly, despite flooring and bloodying the graying Argentinean, Murray was outscored by the hometown Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) on April 27 in Buenos Aires. With Murray removed from … Continue reading →

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs. Martin Murray in the works

According to multiple reports, Bob Arum is in the process of putting together a Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Martin Murray clash, tentatively scheduled for August 3. The Chavez Jr. vs. Murray fight could potentially take place in Mexico City, offering a grand stage for Chavez and his adoring fans. For the British Murray, he would then need to follow up his trip to Argentina and Sergio Martinez's home turf, with one to the backyard of Chavez and his fans, for an opportunity to get another title shot.

The WBC is already ruminating on the idea that Chavez Jr. vs. Murray would be for the interim WBC middleweight strap. Each man is coming off a loss to Maravilla, the full WBC champion, and each man sent him down to the canvas along the way.
Martinez is currently back on the sidelines with more injuries which he sustained in the Murray fight, so it seems quite likely that the WBC will put something up for grabs in this contest. Then the winner will get his rema...

A determined Martin Murray will overcome an apathetic Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Roughly 11 months after getting snagged with dirty urine, former middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will return to the squared circle on August 3 in Mexico City. Recently reinstated by the WBC, the 27-year-old Chavez (46-1-1-1, 32 KOs) will likely throw fists with England’s Martin Murray. Junior last fought in September when he relinquished the WBC middleweight crown by unanimous decision to The Ring and WBC Diamond middleweight king Sergio Martinez. Comparatively, despite flooring and bloodying the graying Argentinean, the 30-year-old Murray (25-1-1, 11 KOs) lost a controversial unanimous decision to the hometown Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) on April … Continue reading →

Sergio Martinez vs. Martin Murray photos from fight night

Middleweight kingpin Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez defeated Martin Murray on Saturday night in Argentina, to the delight of tens of thousands of screaming home country supporters. It was a close, fairly even contest, although Martinez did enough to capture the unanimous decision victory. All three judges had the fight scored 115-112 for Martinez.
Right here, you'll find a collection of photos showcasing the Martinez vs. Murray results. You'll see the fighters up close and personal on fight night. Take a look.

As you can see, we also have a few photos of the weigh-ins from the day before.
Murray put up a strong challenge, and definitely was able to take Martinez out of his game at times. Whether it was the huge expectations from the homecoming to Argentina, or the long layoff and recovery from surgery, Martinez wasn't necessarily at his best.
Nevertheless, it's another successful title defense for Martinez, and one wonders what's next. Is is the...

Sergio Martinez Retains Middleweight Title in Disputed Win Over Martin Murray

Here is what I found ironic.
Last week, Canelo Alvarez won a fight landing and throwing a lot less punches than Austin Trout. He scored a clean knockdown and the consensus was, he won the fight because he simply threw harder punches.
This week, Martin Murray throws almost as many, lands more of the harder punches and scores a clean knockdown on Sergio Martinez, but it is Martinez who claims the victory.
How does that happened?
The fight was in Argentina and there was no way a close fight was going to go Murray’s way, even if in my mind he won the fight, for the reasons I stated above.
Just another reason why I wrote the article on why boxing scoring needs to be revamped for modern times. Even though Martinez won, he has been knocked down three times in his last four fights. He isn’t the elite pound for pound guy anymore. His age, boxing style and surgeries are starting to catch up with him.
Father time is still undefeated.

A graying Sergio Martinez escapes with a win over tough Englishman Martin Murray

Despite getting bloodied and hitting the canvas midway through the eighth round, Argentinean Sergio Martinez unanimously outpointed formidable Englishman Martin Murray to escape with The Ring and WBC middleweight belts on Saturday night in Buenos Aires. Battling in the South American Paris for the first time in 11 years, all three judges ruled that the hometown Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) defeated the 30-year-old Murray (25-1-1, 11 KOs) by a score of 115-112. “Thanks Argentina. Thanks for following me. I love you a lot,” said Martinez, 38, a southpaw who apparently again suffered a broken left hand during the scrap.
Buenos Aires, Bad News: Sergio Martinez Narrowly Outpoints Martin Murray

Martin Murray came close to ruining middleweight champion Sergio Martinez’s homecoming party in Buenos Aires on Saturday, but fell just short. In front of more than 40,000 singing, screaming Argentine fans, Murray put forward a workmanlike effort against a champion who seemed to be at a little less than his best.

Martinez, who would complain of a broken left hand after the fight, fought through a knockdown, low blows and a bleeding eye socket to win a unanimous decision by scores of 115-112 across the board. It wasn’t the homecoming that the Argentine champ would have wanted, but he closed the fight strongly to give his adoring public what they wanted.

The man from St Helens might have had a better shot if he didn’t give away the first half of the fight through inactivity. He sheltered behind a high guard in the first three rounds, landing about a punch in each. In the meantime, Martinez was pumping his southpaw jab and landing the odd left to the body.

Sergio Martinez made his long-awaited return to the ring on Saturday night. Martinez vs. Murray Results
On the HBO telecast, the fight was started earlier than expected due to mounting weather concerns. In Buenos Aires, a big fight has a bit of a different look. Martinez made his ringwalk through tight quarters, as if he were trying to barge his way through a moshpit. It appears they are trying to get this one started quickly, with the weather providing a lot of problems that have the top brass a bit concerned.
The first round saw little action, with both men posturing and feel out each other. Murray is ex...

The Ring and WBC middleweight titlist Sergio Martinez and British contender Martin Murray tipped the scales on Friday for their bout tonight in Buenos Aires. Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KOs), a 38-year-old who most recently fought on September 15 defeating Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. by a unanimous decision to capture the WBC belt, weighed 159.6. Comparatively, Murray (25-0-1, 11 KOs), last vacating the squared circle in November with a sixth round TKO victory over Venezuelan Jorge Navarro, went 159.4 pounds. A menacing southpaw who has long been actively involved in domestic violence and anti-bullying causes, Martinez sustained a partially torn meniscus … Continue reading →

Murray in the spotlight

Although he has fought for a world title before, British middleweight Martin Murray says without a doubt, Saturday's WBC title bout against Sergio Martinez is by far the biggest fight of his career.

That last world title shot was against Felix Sturm at his home turf in Germany. The result was a disappointing draw for Murray in a fight many felt he won. That serves as the only professional fight he has not won in 26 tries. The experience in Germany should help him as he prepares to take on Martinez in his native country of Argentina in front of an expected crowd of 50,000.

"I know what I've got to do, just like I did with Sturm," Murray said, "but I left it a bit too close, but it was a learning experience. I imagine it being very hostile [come Saturday], chanting him, booing me, but I've got myself mentally prepared for that. I've imagined what it will be like and I'm ready for it. I'm looking forward to it."

Murray has faced some accomplished fighters, but none
