Nathan Cleverly To Face Off Shawn Hawk Saturday

WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly of Wales will be defending his title against Shawn Hawk at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Nov. 10. Hawk was named as a late replacement for Ryan Coyne, who was Cleverly’s originally scheduled opponent.
However, Coyne pulled out of the title fight after a contract dispute with Don King, his promoter. Hawk was announced as the new opponent on Nov. 5.
The 25-year-old Cleverly, who is unbeaten with a record of 24-0 with 11 KOs, will have to do adjust his training routine this week since Hawk is an orthodox boxer and he was preparing for a southpaw in Coyne. The 28-year-old Hawk was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and now fights out of Atlantic City, New Jersey. He has a 23-2-1 record with 17 KOs.
Cleverly said he doesn’t think the change in opponents will affect him as long as he uses his boxing skills and instincts. He said he doesn’t really care who he’s fighting and is just anxious to put on a good show during his first bout in America.

Vladine Biosse & Matt Godfrey cruise to wins on Thursday night in Rhode Island

With yet another dominant performance in front of his hometown fans, Vladine Biosse proved the city of Providence still belongs to him until further notice.
Fresh off his masterful win over Joey Spina, “Mr. Providence” (14-1-1, 7 KOs) dominated Canadian challenger Michael Walchuk (9-6), stopping his opponent after five rounds Thursday night at the Twin River Event Center for his second consecutive win and first knockout since April of 2011.
Biosse punished Walchuk from the opening bell, dictating the pace of the fight, while Walchuk spent most of the night covering up trying to avoid damage. Biosse picked up the pace in the fifth, landing a series of damaging flows, forcing Walchuk’s corner to stop the fight at the end of the round.
Biosse’s win highlighted an exciting night of professional boxing, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports, the third installment of Twin River’s Thursday Night Fight Series.
Thursday was also a successful homecoming for forme...

Matt Godfrey returns on July 19, ready to make another run to the cruiserweight title

Gettin’ back to basics: Cruiserweight Godfrey starting from scratch as he aims for another shot at a title
Matt Godfrey’s body might not heal as quickly as it used to after 23 professional fights, and certain injuries might linger longer than normal, but there’s no reason why the Providence, R.I., cruiserweight can’t contend for another shot at a world title.
“I’m 31 years young,” said Godfrey, who’ll fight in front of his hometown fans for the first time in five years on Thursday, July 19th, 2012 at Twin River Casino. “I still feel like a kid in this game even though I’ve been around for a while.”
Godfrey’s journey back to the top of the cruiserweight division begins next Thursday when he faces sturdy veteran Jesse Oltmans (10-3, 7 KOs) of Bartonsville, Pa., in the six-round co-feature of Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports’ “Built To Last” show at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

Unbeaten Thomas Falowo back in action May 24

In some ways, Thomas Falowo was more enamored with the unique souvenir he took home back in March than he was with his victory.
“I got my first black eye as a pro,” Falowo said of his hard-earned, unanimous-decision win over Troy Artis on March 22nd. “It’s good to get that experience out of the way. If all of your fights are one-sided, you get a false sense of security.”
The road to the top has grown increasingly more difficult for Falowo (6-0, 4 KOs) in his last two fights. The undefeated Pawtucket, R.I., middleweight began his career with four consecutive knockouts – three within the first four rounds – but has now gone the distance in each of his last two wins.
Falowo is expecting yet another challenge Thursday, May 24th, 2012 when he faces 29-year-old La Vista, Neb., native Sean Rawley Wilson (5-10, 1 KO) in a six-round bout on the undercard of “Up For Grabs,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

Huck-Afolabi II presser photos, quotes & notes

Normally at a press conference only the fighters of the main event are in the spotlight. But this was not the case on Wednesday afternoon in Erfurt. The spectators of the big fight night on May 5 are also keen to find out which coach comes up with the better strategy for the world championship bout between the cruiserweights Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi.
Hence the two coaching legends of German boxing, Ulli Wegner and Fritz Sdunek, did not hold back at the conference. But before they got started, the WBO champion himself had a few things to say. “Ola Afolabi is a really tough guy. But mentally I am very strong. Therefore he won't get my title,” said Huck. This is the second time that the 27-year-old will be boxing at the Messehalle in Erfurt and he is extremely happy to do so. His first fight here, back in August 2010, ended with a KO victory over the American Matt Godfrey. “The fans here are extremely enthusiastic about boxing so it is amazing that they will get to witness such ...

Huck-Aflobai presser quotes, notes & photos

The “Captain” returns to the cruiserweight division. It will be the ninth time that Marco Huck (34-2, 25 KOs) will put his WBO title on the line when he steps into the ring on May 5. Huck still has fond memories of the Messe Erfurt, having won his previous fight at the same venue against the American Matt Godfrey back in August 2010 by KO in the fifth round.
His opponent in the capital of Thuringia is an old acquaintance - current interim world champion Ola Afolabi (19-2-3, 9 KOs) lost on points against Huck back in December 2009. He is desperate to take revenge.
“Marco did notwin the first fight, I lost it,” according to the Brit. “Back then the environment I surrounded myself with was not as professional but now I am with K2 and the Klitschkos. Fritz Sdunek is my coach. All this provides me with the mentality of a champion and I am ready to take out Huck.”
Of course Huck had something to say to this statement: “The Klitschkos should refrain from sending over their employees, and ...

Undefeated cruiserweight Silgado looking to shine this Saturday in Brooklyn

In order to get where he ultimately wants to reach in the cruiserweight division, undefeated prospect Santander "Demolition Man" Silgado (20-0, 18 KOs) has to get past gatekeeper Willie Herring in Saturday night's eight-round bout, on the Zab Judah-Vernon Paris card, at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn. Silgado-Herring will be taped live and aired the following day on SportsNet New York ("SNY").

Credit: Havoc Boxing

Silgado, now living in Brooklyn, is a knockout specialist from Colombia, as well as arguably the best kept secret in boxing. Fighting for only the second time in the United States, the 26-year-old "Demolition Man" understands that he has to impressively beat veteran Herring (13-9-3, 4 KOs) in order to get closer to being mentioned in the world title shot mix.

Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode preview & prediction

On May 26, Antonio Tarver defends his marginal IBO Cruiserweight Title against unbeaten Lateef Kayode. Tarver, 43, breathed some life back into his career with a dominant 9th-round stoppage of streaking Danny Green last year. A win over Kayode would greatly further his cause in a cruiserweight division that is on its way up.
In order to do that, Tarver, 29-6 (20), will need to repel the challenge of the strong Nigerian contender who is unbeaten in 18 fights--with 14 knockouts. Kayode also enjoys a 14-year advantage in age. But if you ask Tarver, his age is not a burden, but rather a representation of having far more experience. The “Magic Man” has been to the top of the sport and if Kayode wants to get there, he will need to beat a veteran who showed in his last fight that he can still bring it.

2011 Least Respected Boxer of the Year

Which Top Boxer gets the Least Respect?
Boxing is filled with guys who get way more credit, recognition and attention than they deserve. For example, check out boxing's biggest disappointment of the year, David Haye. However, the sport also is loaded with under the radar would-be stars who simply don't get noticed.
Maybe they fight in a division that isn't popular or doesn't receive much exposure in the United States, or maybe they continue to toil away in their home country, far from the eyes of U.S.-based fans. For one reason or another though, they don't get the respect they deserve. Here's the least respected boxer of the year.
2011's Least Respected Boxer: Pongsaklek Wonjongkam
