Top Pro Prospects From The 2012 Olympic Men's Boxing Class

(A few good professionals-to-be? Left to right, via the London 2012 Olympics website: Denys Berenchyk; Roniel Iglesias; Vincenzo Mangiacapre; Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg)Projecting professional boxing prospects from the Olympics is a dicey affair. The ranks of can't-miss-Olympian-turned-bust are flush. Sometimes the Summer Games' newest graduating class produce a ton of quality pros and sometimes not, and usually it takes a good long while for ex-Olympians to come into their own. But let's not allow dicey-ness to get in the way of speculation. Speculation like this is always fodder for a few kicks. And because amateur gold doesn't equal professional success, we don't have to wait for the last gold medal bouts Sunday to conduct this exercise. What makes an Olympian a good pro prospect? If anybody knew for sure, it wouldn't be dicey. But there are some fighters whose abilities translate better to the pro game than the amateur game. Some have big punching power, but ...

Irish boxer Conlan secures semifinals berth & Olympic medal

Day eleven of the London 2012 Olympic Games with the Men's Fly (52kg) and Welterweights (69kg) taking to the ring at the ExCeL Arena with eight mouth-watering quarter-finals deciding who makes it onto the podium.
Getting proceeding underway were 17-year-old rising star from Puerto Rico Jeyvier Cintron Ocasio and top seeded Flyweight (52kg) Misha Aloian from Russia. The Puerto Rican southpaw had surprised everyone by making it to this stage of the competition, his height having been a huge asset in his previous two bouts. He looked to make that count again in the early stages against the speedy reigning AIBA World Champion Aloian.
However it was not to be as the tactically astute Russian's quick counter-punching did the business with two sublime left hooks giving him a three point cushion after the first round. Swift one-twos in the second and some nifty footwork from the 24-year-old favorite also saw him continue dominate as he went further ahead in the bout. Aloian looked ...

Olympic boxing results: Final men’s USA boxer Errol Spence in action

The men's Olympic boxing quarterfinals for the Flyweight and Welterweight divisions were held on Tuesday. The last remaining member of the USA boxing team, Errol Spence, was in action in the Welterweight division, where a win would assure him of at least a bronze medal and a chance for more. So how did things fare for Spence and Team USA's final chance for a men's boxing medal at the London 2012 Olympics?

Errol Spence - Welterweight, Team USA

USA Boxing Results: Errol Spence vs. Andrey Zamkovoy
Errol Spence was in action thanks to an overturned decision, and was team USA's only remaining hope to bring home a medal from the men's boxing competition at London.
Last time out, Spence entered the ring and looked nervous, clearly feeling the pressure as the last boxer left on the team. This time though, he seemed much more relaxed and at ease, and why not? He has a second chance here, do your best and make the most of it.
The first round saw a lot of clinching as th...

Olympic Boxing Guide And Schedule: The Quarterfinals Part Two

Let's say you haven't thrown up in your mouth enough over the last week or so. Maybe you're asking yourself: What can I do to remedy that? Well, I've got good news, friends. Olympic boxing isn't over. The Quarterfinals will continue for three more days, and this preview will get you through two of them. This will take you through the lightweights, middleweights, super heavyweights (Monday), flyweights and welterweights (Tuesday). It's too bad that this all has to be so contemptible. I've been enjoying the action in the ring more than any Olympics in a long time. It's just that too much ugly business is happening to end too many bouts, and no amount of International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) "Editorial Guidance" can make me ignore a potential cause of some of it. If you want to keep watching for reasons other than insufficient internal mouth vomit, there are reasons, too -- a look at some future pros, the chance that you'll see som...

Warren defeated, Selby wins & more on Olympic boxing day 7

The evening session of the seventh day of competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games saw the final eight bouts of second round of preliminaries for the Men's Flyweight (52kg) and Welterweight (69kg) categories. The atmosphere was red-hot with eight adrenaline fueled contests lighting up the ExCeL arena.

Credit: AIBA

USA Team captain and third seed Raushee Warren, now a three-time Olympian, got the Flyweight (52kg) action underway as he faced Nordine Oubaali from France. It was fast and furious straight from the off between the two electric southpaws. Trading punches throughout, these two talented boxers were not giving each other an inch. Two superb left hooks by the experienced Warren saw him edge the first round. Oubaali came back strong and went on the attack in the second. Although the American's slick counter-punches were doing damage early on, the Frenchman's jabs began penetrating his rival's defences. His hook also connected several times and Oubaali cla...

US boxers all eliminated at games

The U.S. men's boxing team is done in London.

All nine men from the most successful team in Olympic boxing history have been eliminated after losses by flyweight Rau'shee Warren and welterweight Errol Spence on Friday night. Although three women are still alive, the American men will head home from London with their worst Olympic showing ever.

Warren lost his opening bout in his record third Olympics, falling to France's Nordine Oubaali 19-18. Spence then lost a difficult decision to India's defense-minded Krishan Vikas, falling 13-11 despite showing more aggression throughout the bout.

The Americans' 48 gold medals and 108 total medals are the most in Olympic boxing history, but their shutout in London caps a two-decade struggle to adapt to changes in the amateur sport.

The U.S. team won just one bronze medal in Beijing, previously its worst showing.

USA boxing results day 7: Warren & Spence lose, men’s team completely eliminated

Historically Bad Showing for United States Boxing
The final two remaining men on the United States Olympic boxing team were in action on Friday afternoon during Day 7 of the London Olympics boxing competition. Flyweight Rau'shee Warren was looking to make a run to the medal stand, and Welterweight Errol Spence was looking to build on his strong first outing and continue advancing in the tournament. Things didn't turn out so well for them, and it will go down as the worst showing for the USA Olympic boxing team in history.
First up on Friday afternoon for Team USA boxing was Rau'shee Warren. Warren is a three-time Olympian, a first ever for the United States in boxing, and was the team's strongest medal contender, coming off a first round by in the competition. He met France's Nordine Oubaali.
Warren took a 9-6 lead after the first round, but seemed either to be complacent or sleepwalking in the second, allowing Oubaali to trim the margin to 1 point. The third se...

Olympic Boxing Guide And Schedule: The Men’s Round Of 16 Part Two

Controversy has engulfed the Olympic boxing once again, with a couple of terrible nights of scoring in London. Bad scoring and refereeing really suck, but we at TQBR are going to put on a brave face and continue to guide you through the competition. Friday we’ve got the men’s round of 16 in the flyweight and welterweight divisions. Our previous schedules were accompanied by a picture of American bantamweight Joe Diaz, Jr., who was bundled out of the tournament by Cuba’s Lazaro Alvarez in a brave effort. So we’ll start a new tradition with a pic of American welterweight Errol Spence. With a name like Errol, he was born into that rakish moustache. Flyweight – 52kg/114.6lb – 3 August America’s last remaining serious medal hope, Rau’shee Warren faces France’s Nordine Oubaali after a bye in the first round. Considering the sharks in this division, Oubaali is a relatively easy draw. Warren best concentrate though, so as not to repeat his early exit in Beijing. Russian world and Europe...

Thailand's Butdee wows crowds with win
The action continued with the evening session on the third day of boxing at the London 2012 Olympic Games. A capacity crowd at the ExCeL Arena welcomed the Flyweight (52kg) and Light Heavyweights (81kg) for ten bouts of high-octane drama.
2011 World Series of Boxing (WSB) Individual Championships finalist with Paris United, 25-year-old Nordine Oubaali of France began his assault on the Flyweight (52kg) title in style. The experienced recent AIBA European Olympic Qualifying Event winner came out of the blocks at double speed, firing all kind of shots in direction of the relatively unknown Ajmal Faisal of Afghanistan. Pummeling his rival throughout the three rounds, Oubaali was just unstoppable as he outclassed the three-time Afghan National Champion to win 22:9. The Frenchman faces USA Boxing Team Captain Raushee Warren, the third seed in the draw and a veteran of three Olympic Games.
When interviewed, Oubaali stated, "I had a fantasti...

Men’s -73kg Judo
Doing a little research for this event and speaking with a lot of people a heck of a lot smarter than myself on the topic of Judo there were two key Judoka’s to watch – Japans Riki Nakaya who nabbed gold at the 2011 World Judo Championships and Ki-Chun Wang, the silver medalist at the Beijing Games.
Well, turns out the industry insiders were proven wrong, as Mansur Isaev of Russia collected the second gold medal for Russia in Judo defeating both of them on his route to the top of the class.
Day two delivered surprises in hoards early on but that wasn’t the case yesterday with all the favorites making their transitions to the final 16 without too many troubles, in fact things continued as the status quo until we reached the semi-finals.

US boxer Warren drops third bout

Rau'shee Warren lost his first fight at the London Games on Friday night, dropping the first three-time U.S. Olympic boxer to 0-3 in Olympic competition.

The nine-man U.S. boxing team has lost eight straight bouts.

French flyweight Nordine Oubaali edged Warren 19-18, rallying from a first-round deficit with more aggression and precision than Warren, a former world champion. Warren also lost his contact lenses in the opening round and couldn't size up Oubaali, who mostly controlled the final two rounds.

Warren also lost his first fights in Athens and Beijing, but stayed in the amateur ranks to become the first U.S. boxer in three Olympics. Now 25, Warren still believes the wait was worth it.

''It ain't really no setback for me,'' Warren said, his stoicism contrasting sharply with the anguish he felt after his one-point Beijing loss. ''It's always a good experience to do something people don't normally do.''

Warren was the third-seeded flyweight in London
