Garcia drops Lopez in 4th round

Mikey Garcia stopped Juan Manuel Lopez in the fourth round Saturday night, leaving the WBO featherweight title vacant after Garcia failed to make weight.

Garcia (32-0) weighed in at 128 pounds Friday, two over the featherweight limit. Lopez weighed in at 125 1/2.

Lopez (33-3) would have regained the title with a win.

Garcia put Lopez on the ground with a strong left-handed blow 1:34 into the fourth round for his 27th career knockout.

Garcia won the title from Orlando Salido on a unanimous decision in New York on Jan. 19. The title reign, however, was short-lived after Garcia didn't make weight.

The only two losses of Lopez's career were to Salido. The first one cost him the WBO belt, and the second led to a one-year suspension by Puerto Rican boxing officials when he accused the referee who stopped the fight of betting on the match.

Lopez had won twice since his one-year ban ended, beating Aldimar Silva Santos in February and knocking out Eugenio Lopez in an undercard bout in Mexico City in Apri

Bits And Pieces: Mikey Garcia Vs. Juan Manuel Lopez Preview And Prediction

What remains of the Juan Manuel Lopez who stormed onto the HBO airwaves in 2008, inspiring broadcaster Max Kellerman to enthuse, "A star is born!"? The glimmers of greatness he showed then have steadily dimmed, certainly. He replaced excellence with pure excitement, though, and became a different kind of star. One thing held steady from the moment he burst into broader public consciousness: He has retained his popularity in boxing-mad Puerto Rico, and with the considerable segment of boxing fandom that adores face-first brawlers.

How much of the earlier Lopez is left will be telling for his chances against featherweight contender Mikey Garcia Saturday, back on HBO. Things got more interesting after the weigh-in Friday, when it looked like JuanMa might not be the only one who is incomplete. What will remain of Garcia after he failed to make weight and looked gaunt at 127.5 pounds? Garcia's glimmers of greatness have steadily glowed brighter, especially after he dism...

Garcia set for 1st WBO title defense

Mikey Garcia fights as defending WBO featherweight champion for the first time Saturday night against former title-holder Juan Manuel Lopez.

He has prepared to battle his nerves as well.

''I don't feel any different, but people treat you different,'' said Garcia, who will face Lopez at American Airlines Center in a fight that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban helped promote. ''Now I'm coming in as a champion, so it might be a little more excitement this time.''

Garcia took the title from Orlando Salido on a unanimous decision in New York in January. He is 31-0 with 26 knockouts.

The only two losses of Lopez's career came to Salido. The first one cost him the WBO belt, and the second led to a one-year suspension by Puerto Rican boxing officials when he accused the referee who stopped the fight of betting on the match.

Lopez, who is known as Juanma, has said several times the fight with Garcia is the biggest of the Puerto Rican's career.

Mikey Garcia-Juan Manuel Lopez pre-fight quotes

On Saturday June 15, Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Manuel Lopez takes place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, televised on HBO Boxing After Dark. Right here, you can find a complete collection of quotes from the fighters as they discussed the upcoming fight, their training, game plans, and much more. Take a look.
MIKEY GARCIA: We have definitely had a very good camp. We worked very hard, with Robert and my dad [Eduardo] and Darryl Hudson for strength and speed. I think we are doing an excellent job and we are in the last week here and I am very excited to get back in the ring again and show another side of Mikey Garcia.
JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ: We had a great training camp. We are working real hard on the conditioning. We know we are going to have to be at the top of our game conditioning-wise because we know Mikey Garcia is a real good boxer.
Do you feel after your last two fights, even though not very competitive, have rid you of rust?

Garcia-Salido results, photos & videos: Interviews & photo gallery from fight night

Last night on HBO, Mikey Garcia routed Orlando Salido, knocking him down four times and taking home the WBO Featherweight Title. Right here, we have a collection of fight night photos from the tripleheader at Madison Square Garden, which of course also showcased Gennady Golovkin against Gabriel Rosado, and Roman Martinez against Juan Carlos Burgos. Take a look below.

Garcia easily took care of business against Salido, who was just too easy to hit, and couldn't handle the crisp, precise variety of shots that Mikey was throwing at him.
In the co-feature, as you can see from the photo above, Golovkin turned Rosado into a bloody mess. Rosado was game throughout but just couldn't compete against a guy of that size and caliber.
And in the first fight, Juan Carlos Burgos should have won Martinez's title, but the scorecards produced an unsatisfying draw. It was a solid action fight, but Burgos seemed to control it throughout and certainly deserved to win.
Enjoy the pho...

HBO Boxing After Dark: Orlando Salido vs Mickey Garcia Recap

The Garden was treated to a triple headed boxing fest, which was capped off with Mickey Garcia besting Orlando Salido in 8 rounds to claim the WBO Featherweight Title.
Black Sports Online was live from Madison Square Garden covering the night of boxing. Salido vs Garcia was touted widely as a pick em match from the get-go, with both fighters having an equal shot at a victory. Salido, however, went in with the underdog label with Garcia’s youth going against Salido’s veteran fighting style.
But before the main event, we were treated to two surprising undercards:
Burgos vs Martinez
Bad scoring from the judges all around, after Burgos dictated the pace of the fight all round long. The judges scores came to 116-112 for Rocky Martinez and a score for Juan Carlos Burgos at 117-111 and 114-114 for the draw.
Despite a a rough first round Burgos rebounded nicely worked aggressively on Martinez. There was a bit of controversy over the draw, but alas Rocky Martinez retained the WBO super featherweight title.

Business Time: Orlando Salido Vs. Miguel Angel Garcia Preview And Prediction

Enough foreplay. January's ESPN2 Friday Night Fights and Showtime ShoBox cards have been all well and good, but the first "down to business"-style boxing event of 2013 is upon us Saturday on HBO. As the main event was rescheduled from late 2012 after one of the combatants suffered a training injury, it christens the New Year quite by accident.

That main event, Orlando Salido-Mikey Garcia, might be overshadowed for pure action by one undercard fight, Roman Martinez-Juan Carlos Burgos, and another undercard bout has the most dynamic fighter in the show, Gennady Golovkin.

Salido-Garcia is the most well-rounded fight of the show, though: Garcia is a dynamic talent in his own way, while Salido guarantees action with his pressure; Garcia is an up-and-coming young fighter, Salido is a hard-nosed veteran; Salido is the world's #1 featherweight, Garcia inhabits the top 10; and it's got an appealing style match-up between a boxer-puncher and an intelligent brawle...

Video interviews: Mikey Garcia & Robert Garcia talk title challeenge against Salido

Undefeated Mikey Garcia is back on January 19th, as he finally challenges for a world title by taking on the tough veteran Orlando Salido. Garcia has been hard at work, training with brother Robert Garcia. Right here, Robert speaks with Top Rank's Crystina Poncher about Mikey, his training, his previous experience and more.

Robert acknowledges that Mikey hasn't faced the same kind of competition that Salido has. They know it's going to be a tough fight, but they're prepared for it.
Mikey also speaks with Poncher, and he's excited for the opportunity, he feels as if he has earned this title challenge as opposed to other people, and that if he just does what he knows how to do, then he'll come out ahead and with that championship belt.
Enjoy the interviews with Mikey and Robert Garcia and keep on checking back with us over the next 10 days or so for more updates on Garcia vs. Salido and the entire Top Rank promoted HBO-televised event from MSG on the 19th.

Orlando Salido vs. Mikey Garcia preview & prediction

WBO Featherweight Champion Orlando Salido was originally supposed to defend his hard-earned crown against Mikey Garcia on November 10th, but that was postponed after Salido broke a finger. Now the fight is scheduled for January 19, in New York on an HBO-televised event as part of the undercard for Golovkin vs. Rosado.
In Garcia, Salido faces an undefeated slugger who has come up through the ranks in the old fashioned way: by winning and defending two regional titles. In Salido, Garcia faces a veteran Mexican champion who, in modern memory at least, has lost only to some of the very best.

Salido retains WBO featherweight title

Mexico's Orlando Salido retained his WBO featherweight title Saturday by handing Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico his second big defeat in under a year.

The 31-year-old Salido earned a technical knockout in the tenth round at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum to improve to 38-11-2 with 26 KOs, while Lopez fell to 31-2 with 28 KOs.

Salido handed 28-year-old Lopez his first career loss last April with a technical knockout in the eighth round.

The Mexican boxer known for his powerful right hand won his previous two fights against Filipino Weng Haya and Japanese Kenichi Yamaguchi by knockout.

Lopez seeks to avenge last year's loss to Salido

Juan Manuel ''Juanma'' Lopez is aiming to avenge the lone loss of his career and reclaim his WBO featherweight crown when he takes on Mexican boxer Orlando Salido on Saturday.

The heavy-handed Puerto Rican southpaw (32-1, 28 KOs), comes in as a 2-1 favorite and will have the hometown crowd behind him at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan.

But that advantage didn't help Lopez last April when Salido (37-11-2, 25 KOs) pummeled him repeatedly with his powerful right hand en route to winning a controversial eighth-round technical knockout. It was a stunning upset by Salido, who took Lopez's WBO featherweight belt on his third title defense.

Lopez called the rematch with Salido ''the most important fight of my career.''
