British Beat: David Price Gets Set To Pension Off Tony Thompson

(David Price, left; Tony Thompson, right)

Briton David Price returns to redesign the heavyweight skyline this weekend in a 10-round non-title bout against Washington D.C.’s condemned chimney stack Tony Thompson in Liverpool. The TNT-fisted Price has cantered through his first 15 starts as a professional; if his whiskers have felt a retaliatory punch in the three years or so he has punched for money, then it can be looked upon as an isolated incident. 41-year-old Thompson, 36-3 (24), can alter that on Saturday for as long as it takes Price to sink his demolition plunger.

Thompson is routinely referred to as a good, world class heavyweight, which tells you everything you need to know about the plight of this once iconic division. After starting out his career as a 28-year-old ham and egger, even he must have been astounded at the lengths his 6ft 5in frame and narrow skill-set could carry him in the 21st century. The gangling portsider’s win column reads like a lost generation ...

Vitali Klitschko Takes On Manuel Charr September 8 In What Could Be His Last Bout

Getty ImagesVitali Klitschko will be defending his WBC World Heavyweight Championship in Moscow, Russia on Saturday, September 8 when he takes on little-known, but undefeated challenger Manuel Charr of Germany. The 41-year-old Klitschko of Ukraine will take his remarkable record of 44-2, with 40 KO’s record into the ring with him while Charr, who is ranked number seven by the WBC, has a spotless 21-0 record with 11 KOs.While Charr may have an impeccable boxing record, he doesn’t really pose much of a threat to the champion and has never fought anybody ranked in the top 15 as of yet.The only name fighters most boxing fans may have heard of are Sherman Williams, Owen Beck, Zack Page and Danny Williams and the 27-year-old German struggled with Page and Williams. Charr just doesn’t have the speed and power to knock off the champion, but it’s a fight and anything can happen, especially if Klitschko walks into one.If Klitschko gets past Charr there’s a possibility that he may take on Englishman David Haye,

Deontay Wilder gets new opponent for August 4 fight

With Kelvin Price forced to withdraw from his August 4 fight with unbeaten Deontay "Bronze Bomber" Wilder due to a rib injury, Trinidad and Tobago's Kertson "Warrior" Manswell has answered the call to face the 2008 Olympic Bronze Medal winner in a heavyweight slugfest at the Mobile Civic Center Arena Expo Hall in Mobile, Alabama that will be televised live on FOX Sports Net and FOX Deportes.
26-year-old Deontay Wilder (23-0, 23 KO's) put his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama on the boxing map in 2008 when he earned a Bronze Medal at the Beijing Olympics as the only United States boxer to medal at the games. Later that year, he turned professional with a second round technical knockout over Ethan Cox. Since then, no one has gotten out of the fourth round against the exciting knockout artist. He has gone 3-0 in 2012 thus far, with his most recent win over former world title challenger Owen Beck proving that he's ready for prime time. Wilder ...

With 23 wins and no losses and all of his victories coming by way of knockout, 2008 United States Olympic Bronze Medalist Deontay "Bronze Bomber" Wilder is seen by many as the spark that can ignite the heavyweight division once again.
On Saturday, August 4 "The Bronze Bomber" will step into the ring in front of his home state fans at the Mobile Civic Center Arena Expo Hall in Mobile, Alabama to face fellow unbeaten heavyweight Kelvin "Price Is Right" Price, who hails from just down the road in Pensacola, Florida, in a showdown that will be televised live on FOX Sports Net and FOX Deportes and FUEL TV.
The fight is Wilder's first since his biggest win to date, a third round technical knockout over longtime heavyweight contender Owen Beck on June 23. Now Price is next in line to try and chop down the 6-foot-7 rising star.

Half-Year 25 Favorite Boxing Prospects Report Card

(Javier Fortuna)In January, one of my first contributions to TQBR was a list of my 25 favorite prospects to start 2012. Now that we have met the halfway point of the year, compiled here is a report on how those 25 prospects have fared and a grade letter assigned. Over the first six months, prospects were 41-2 with 27 knockouts. Not a bad start.

MAKING THE GRADE Eleider Alvarez, light heavyweight, 28, 9-0, 5 KOs (2-0) B+ Alvarez didn't sparkle against Rayco Saunders on ESPN2 in April, but returned to the Bell Centre in early June to lay a whooping on once-beaten Shawn Hawk. Alvarez needs to be a little more active at 28, and if he is able to get two fights to close out '12 it will have been a good year for him. Next fight: N/A Kell Brook, welterweight, 26, 27-0, 18 KOs (1-0) A- Brook has only fought once in '12, turning in a great performance in dropping Matthew Hatton en route to a wide points win. That fight headlined a stacked card by Matchroom Promotions, an...

Summer guide to heavyweight action

Nobody will ever make a case for this being a golden age in the heavyweight division. However, that doesn't mean the division is completely devoid of intrigue.

Forty-year-old WBC champ Vitali Klitschko may not fight beyond 2012, and the implications of that title vacancy are having challengers jockey for position.

Meanwhile, WBO/IBF/WBA champ Wladimir Klitschko is still going strong and has, for the most part, cycled through all available challengers. Although the younger Klitschko brother will be relegated to fighting rehab projects for the foreseeable future, there are plenty of interesting fighters in line behind him. Maybe none have a legitimate chance of defeating him, but good bouts could be had among the second-tier big men.

Names like Alexander Povetkin, Robert Helenius, Chris Arreola, Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev and at least a half-dozen other names could be matched together for interesting bouts. Further down the line, Seth Mitchell, David Price and Mike Perez could also become interesting figur

Weekend Afterthoughts, Featuring Carl Froch, Lucian Bute, And The Landscape At 168

Lucian Bute had a bit of an Ivan Drago quality to him heading into his fight this past weekend with Carl Froch in Nottingham, making Froch's choice to use “No Easy Way Out” from the all-time classic film Rocky IV as his walkout music an absolute brilliant choice.
Bute, fighting for the first time on enemy turf since 2004, chose to ditch his usual regiment of coming to the ring to U2's “Where the Streets Have No Name,” and promptly got starched by Froch after nearly five mostly lopsided rounds. For the full report, check out Scott Kraus' piece here.
With our fearless leader Tim Starks out this week, Mark Ortega pinch hit this edition of the Weekend Afterthoughts.

Does Bute enact the rematch clause? Considering how mostly one-sided the action was, a lot of people feel that Bute would be crazy to enact the rematch clause that was in the contract with Froch that would bring a return fight to the former champ's stomping grounds in Montreal. While it is true Froch d...
