Rookie Jones enjoys charmed life with Patriots

Before beginning his interview with the media on Friday, Chandler Jones had one question for reporters.

''Do I have anything on my face,'' New England's defensive end said with a grin while staring into a sea of cameras and microphones focused solely on him. ''I appreciate it, guys.''

The Patriots certainly are grateful for everything they're getting out of him, too.

Halfway through his first season, Jones leads all NFL rookies with six sacks and has bolstered a defensive line that now ranks among the league's best at stopping the run.

One year after finishing 17th in the NFL, yielding 117.1 yards rushing per game, New England (5-3) is tied with Pittsburgh for seventh this season, surrendering just 88.6 yards a contest.

Jones is a major reason why.

The 21st overall pick out of Syracuse leads the Patriots in sacks and has recorded 33 tackles, good enough for fourth on a defensive unit that is struggling to defend against the pass.

That's hardly all, though

Padres' new owners stress community spirit

A day after their purchase of the San Diego Padres from John Moores closed, the new owners met the press and the players at Petco Park before the Padres' 8-2 win over the Braves. Led by members of two families that trace their baseball heritage to former Dodgers owners Walter and Peter O'Malley plus San Diego business and civic leader Ron Fowler, the new group spoke about a bright future for the Padres without divulging many details. Fowler, who will be the control person for the new group, said the new ownership group takes over with three key criteria: "Continuity, consistency, community." "We want the Padres to be part of what makes San Diego great," said Fowler. "We're going to take it up another notch." Questions about future payroll, the continuing impasse in the television distribution, possible changes to Petco Park and even the composition of the ownership group were answered in generalities. The heirs to the O'Malley ...

Chandler Jones impressive in Patriots' camp

Patriots rookie Chandler Jones already has heard the comparisons to Jason Pierre-Paul of the Giants.

Both are 6-foot-5 defensive ends who excel at stuffing the run and rushing the quarterback. Both were first-round draft choices from colleges near their hometowns. And both figure to be major contributors to their teams for a long time.

But Jones is trying to carve his own path - whether it's powering past would-be blockers or chasing down speedy running backs.

''Jason Pierre-Paul is a great player and I'm a different player from him,'' Jones said Monday. ''I'm not going to sit here and compare us two, but he's a great player and I respect his game.''

Pierre-Paul, a native of Deerfield Beach, Fla., was drafted with the 15th pick of the 2010 draft out of South Florida. As a rookie, he played in 16 games with no starts and only 17 tackles. But he had 4 1-2 sacks. He emerged last season when he started all 16 games with 66 tackles and 16 1-2 sacks. He had two ta

Patriots Make Staff Changes; Sign Two UDFA’s

The New England Patriots made some changes amongst the coaching staff official on Thursday by announcing that Matt Patricia is now the defensive coordinator.
Patricia, who was the safeties coach, has called all the defensive plays from the sideline since Dean Pees left the team after the 2009 season.
The RPI grad has coached at his alma mater as a grad assistant, then he went on to Amherst College as defensive line coach, then Syracuse as the offensive grad assistant, before he came to New England as the offensive coaching assistant in 2004.
In his time with the Patriots he has been an assistant offensive line coach, linebackers coach, safeties coach and now defensive coordinator.
In addition to the Patricia promotion the team also announced that Steve Belichick was named as a coaching assistant.
Belichick, the son of the head coach, is following in the footsteps of his father and his grandfather, for who he is named.
The younger Belichick, a Rutgers grad, walked onto the foot...

Pats hire Belichick's son as assistant

The New England Patriots have hired Bill Belichick's son as a coaching assistant, making him the third generation of the family to try his hand as a football coach.

The team said Thursday that Steve Belichick will join his father's staff. Bill Belichick's father, also named Steve, was a fullback who played for the Detroit Lions and coached in college, spending 33 years on the staff at Navy.

The hire was among several New England coaching moves Thursday that included Matt Patricia being moved into the defensive coordinator slot. That position was vacant last season, when the Patriots won the AFC title and lost to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. Patricia coached the safeties last year, and was formerly the linebackers coach for five years.

Also Thursday, the team confirmed that it had signed running back Joseph Addai and seven rookie free agents.

Addai is a former first-round draft pick who played six seasons for the Indianapolis Colts. He has gained 4,453 yards on 1,095 carries with 39 r

Let’s meet Patriots LB coach Patrick Graham, who has helped keep it together… and links!

When the Patriots played the Raiders, the worst news in the win was that captain and linebacker Jerod Mayo went down with a knee injury. No doubt, everyone who saw it freaked out for a second.
How could the team deal with his loss?
Yet what happened was Gary Guyton fit right into his spot, the defense had two performances that were its best of the season, and it all kept going along. The linebacker unit even seemed to come together. As Mayo seems primed to return tomorrow vs. the Steelers, nothing came apart in his absence.
And the man behind the scenes was first-year linebackers coach Patrick Graham, the Yale graduate who has been working for the Patriots since 2009. For my article in today’s paper, my goal was to help us all get to know him just a little bit.
