Penn State gets Finkled by Fera against UVA

In his only year as Penn State’s kicker, Anthony Fera hit all 20 of his extra point attempts and went 14-17 on field goals – he never missed within 40 yards. It sucked that he decided to transfer to Texas after the Sandusky Sanctions came out but we never thought we’d miss that leg the way the Nittany Lions missed it yesterday against Virginia.
The Lions dominated the Cavaliers in the first half and played good enough to win in the second. PSU won the turnover battle, outgained the Cavs and owned the clock…but they still lost 17-16. It could have had something to do with Sam Ficken missing more field goals in Charlottesville than Fera has missed in his entire career.
The Lions opened the game with a 75-yard drive that ate up 6:27 and ended with a touchdown. Things looked pretty good…pretty, pretty good. Then the Lions forced a turnover on UVA’s very first play but the ensuing drive ended with Ficken missing a 40-yard field goal – whatever, he’s only a sophomore. Three possessions l...

This Date in Pirates History: August 18

On a day that the great Roberto Clemente would’ve turned 78(more on him later), we have two trades to discuss, six other players born on this date(including another Pirates HOF player), and a Jolly Roger Rewind from John Fredland.
The Trades
On this date in 1989, the Pirates traded outfielder Glenn Wilson to the Astros for outfielder Billy Hatcher. Wilson had been with the Pirates just over one year, coming over the previous July from the Mariners in exchange for Darnell Coles. Glenn was hitting .282 with nine homers and 49 RBI’s in 100 games at the time of the deal. After the trade, he batted just .216 for the Astros, then ended up coming back to Pittsburgh in 1993, after being out of the majors for two seasons. Hatcher played just 27 games for the Pirates, getting traded in the off-season to the Reds, where he won a World Series ring, hitting .333 against Pittsburgh in the NLCS. Prior to the trade, Billy was hitting .228 in 108 games for the Astros, with 22 steals.
On this date in 1952, the Pirates trad

Sixers looking to find a big man at No. 15

One big man after another walked through the Philadelphia 76ers' practice facility in recent weeks and showed their stuff.

On Thursday night, one of those guys will come back to stay.

The Sixers, who bowed of the postseason in the second round, need a power forward or center to clog the middle. They should find one with the 15th pick in the NBA draft.

''I think this is a good time to be 10 to 20,'' team president Rod Thorn said. ''There are some good players there that can turn out to be as good as some of the guys taken a little higher.''

Percy Jones III, Terrence Jones, Andrew Nicholson, Arnett Moultrie, John Henson, Tyler Zeller, Marquis Teague, Hollis Thompson, Moe Harkless, Quincy Miller and Mike Scott are just some of the players that worked out in Philadelphia over the past month.

''If you go big, you would like to get an athletic big,'' Thorn said. ''Our guys aren't super athletic, our bigs. So if you could get an athletic big who ca

March Madness 2012: Previewing the South Region — is Kentucky Final Four Bound?

Selection Sunday is through. The matchups are set, Washington fans are crying, and if you listen real close, you’ll hear mad typing across the country as millions fill out their brackets.
So, who do we have at GridironGrit? Here’s my picks for the South Region, including upset alerts, and the most overrated/ underrated teams. I’ll cover the best match of the first two rounds (not counting play ins), and then analysis of every game from the Sweet 16 on. A link to my complete bracket is here.
First Round
8. Iowa State vs 9. Connecticut – Louisville, KY – Thursday, March 15, 9:45PM EST on CBS
Player to watch – Royce White, Iowa State, PF. White is a beast, an absolute beast. He’s 6’9″, 270 lbs, and essentially the entire Iowa State team inside the paint. White leads the Cyclones in points, rebounds, assists, you name it. If you can’t stop White than he may singlehandedly lead Iowa State to the Final 4.
This is one game troubling many experts and bracketologists. UConn is a Big East...

This Date in Pirates History. February 11

On this date in 1928 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded pitcher Vic Aldridge to the New York Giants in exchange for future Hall of Fame pitcher Burleigh Grimes. Aldridge was 34 at the time of the trade and had won 15 games for the Pirates in 1927, helping them to their fourth World Series appearance. There were signs of a drop in his stuff, he posted his highest ERA that season at 4.25 and he got hit hard in his only WS start. Grimes was also 34 years old and had gone 19-8 3.54 in his only year with the Giants. He was asking to be traded due to his unhappiness over how he was handled late in the season by manager John McGraw. Grimes was a former Pirate, starting his career with the team in 1916.
This trade was a one-sided win for the Pirates. Aldridge continued his downward slide and his major league career was done before the season ended. He went 4-7 4.83 in 16 starts and six relief appearances. He played the next season in the minors and was out of baseball by 1931. Grimes lead the NL in wins in 1928 with 25, c
