Top 10 British boxing prospects – a look back one year later

Last June I published a list of what I saw to be Britain’s best ten boxing prospects, considering their achievements and potential. With almost a year having passed since, it is now apt to review exactly what these men have achieved in the intermittent period. What have they accomplished? Have they progressed or regressed? What stands in wait for them in the future? All these questions will be answered as I recap what a year has brought for some of British boxing’s hopeful superstars.
Kell Brook: Welterweight, 27 years old
WAS: 27-0 (18) NOW: 29-0 (19)
Last year I glimpsed into my crystal ball and saw great things on the horizon for Brook. Unfortunately, almost a year on and nothing has changed - those great things remain on the horizon. The good news is Brook remains undefeated. That crucial “0” at the end of a perfectly marketable resume is intact, though not without its troubles. Brook survived a war with Carson Jones, suffering a broken nose along the way. Difficulties in that...

Carl Frampton KOs Kiko Martinez, looks to Scott Quigg by year’s end?

In front a packed house at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northen Ireland “The Jackal” Carl Frampton defeated the resilient Kiko Martinez to capture the EBU Super bantamweight Title and retain the IBF Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight title

Prior to the fight, the undefeated Frampton vowed to outbox Martinez, which he did. Frampton also stated in the later rounds he would up the tempo in search of a KO. He did just that in spectacular fashion.
Almost reminiscent of Marquez’s 6th round KO over Pacquaio last December, Frampton created a trap which Martinez fell for. Frampton stepped back creating distance to throw a hard right hand onto the oncoming Martinez. Despite being able to make it to his feet, the referee waved off the contest after Martinez appeared to have lost his bearings.
In the early-goings, Framption looked to pick his shots against the hard-hitting Martinez who appears to only know one route of direction; forwards. However, Mart...

Scott Quigg makes a statement with Munroe stoppage

Amidst the furor of Ricky Hatton’s short-lived comeback, there was an excellent fight further down Saturday night’s Manchester bill featuring two of Britain’s best super bantamweights, as Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe squared off for a second time.
Their first fight proved inconclusive, ending in anti-climax with a bad cut to Munroe leaving him unable to continue, while Quigg’s perfect record was blotched by the resulting technical draw. Settling matters was an important piece of business for both Quigg and Munroe to attend to, but the unfortunate yet stark reality was that their fight garnered little attention in the blazing wake left by the media trail coveting Hatton’s return.
Nonetheless, those in the fight game knew the genuine significance of this bout. Quigg - a fresh faced and well talked-of prospect, had it tough against the dogged, battle-hardened Munroe, and an exciting cross-roads clash was fully anticipated.
Munroe entered the ring to The Fugees “Ready or Not”. It show...

Top 4 rivalries in British boxing today

“Rivalry is the life of trade, and the death of the trader” – Elbert Hubbard
Previously I discussed some of the more spiteful recent boxing rivalries seen, and in some cases not seen, in a British ring. There is no doubt our fine sport has a greater resonance when there are two enemies with their pride on the line, bloodlust on their mind and hate in their heart. Here I will go through four current British Boxing rivalries that simmer more than the others, detailing their conception, present standing and consider the potential likelihood of their being settled in the future.
[See: Part 1 - The Best & Worst of British Boxing Rivalries]
Tyson Fury – David Price
Rivalries are often more fun when the characters involved have genuine differences. Tyson Fury is the mad hatter of British boxing. He once took his shirt off and challenged Dereck Chisora while the two sat ringside watching George Groves-James Degale. He has been known to be publicly chauffeured by horses with a megaphone ...

Carl Frampton topples Molitor in six

Results from Belfast: Carl Frampton takes out the Canadian Kid

Barry McGuigan has, for quite some time now, banged the Carl Frampton drum. He has told the press of the young Belfast-man’s power, his dedication and most of all, his potential. Last night in his hometown, Frampton enjoyed something of a coming out party as he downed Steve Molitor three times on route to a sixth round stoppage victory. The outcome sees Frampton emerge from the prospect to contender status, despite having just fifteen fights on his ledger.
Frampton was on top of Molitor, known as “The Canadian Kid”, from the start of the first round until the stoppage came. Hovering around the ring on fast feet, Frampton did not let Molitor get set, pressuring him and stripping his confidence away round by round. The first three rounds saw Frampton connect with straight right hands as he came in to range unloading volleys of punches, not all connecting, before getting out without allowing Molitor to reply.

At last year’s TRAD TKO Boxing Gym’s Boxers & Celebrities Charity Football Tournament, in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, so many big names turned out to entertain the fans, amongst them a couple of chart toppers, a brace of Soap Opera stars but there can be no surprise that the biggest contingent was from the World of Boxing.
Boy oh boy, there were more stars than you could shake a stick at, including WBO Lightweight World Champion Ricky Burns and his upcoming title challenger WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Champion Kevin Mitchell, British, Commonwealth, European and WBA International Super Bantamweight Champion Rendall Munroe, British Lightweight Champion Anthony Crolla, Commonwealth Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders and British Super Middleweight Champion Paul Smith to name but a very few.

Cleverly, Mitchell & Munroe amongst British stars for 3rd annual charity soccer game

For the past couple of years around this time TRAD TKO Boxing Gym supremo Johnny Eames has taken a break, from the business of boxing, to head up the team that organizes the annual Boxers and Celebrities Charity Football Tournament, to raise much needed funding for the Indee Rose Trust, which provides support and care packages for youngsters suffering from brain and spinal tumors.
This year is no different, as earlier today Johnny announced the date and location for this year’s extravaganza - Sunday, August 12th at the Concord Rangers Football Club on Canvey Island, Essex.
For those of you that have yet to attend one of these excellent tournaments, boy have you missed out on a great day out, as well as the chance to watch some of the sport’s biggest stars in action.
The list of those that have taken part in previous events, many of whom will again be at Canvey Island on the 12th August, is a veritable who’s who of British Boxing, Music and Television.

Top 10 British boxing prospects

The Best British Prospects in Boxing 2012

When assessing a prospect, it is important to forget how old they are, how many defeats they have on their ledger and how many knockouts they have scored, as the cream tends to rise to the top regardless. Taking this into account, below is my list of the top 10 British prospects in boxing to look out for in the coming years.
Some are better known than others, and only one has challenged for a world title, but I feel all genuinely have good chances of competing at the highest level as they advance in their careers. So, in order, here are my top 10 British boxing prospects in 2012.

1) Kell Brook 26 years old, Welterweight – 27(18) - 0

Heads clash as Munroe-Quigg ends in stalemate

No Contest? No Argument!

Having been teed up so perfectly as the ideal crossroads match-up, it was a great shame that an accidental clash of heads would see to it that Rendall Munroe and Scott Quigg were not able fulfill the potential their showdown had promised this Saturday night in the Manchester Velodrome.
For the 23-year-old Quigg, it was a huge step up, but one that could throw him into the fringes of the world picture at Super-Bantam. For Munroe, once vanquished by Toshiaki Nishioka, it was a career lifeline.
The fight was geared up for fireworks, and the short-lasting action seemed to fit the pre-fight description. Both appeared confident, with Munroe walking out relaxed in his trademark sunglasses/hat combination, while the younger man seemed positively gleeful at the opportunity to give a lesson to the old warrior opposite him.
Quigg appeared sharp in the first round, boxing on the back foot and firing a right over the top as Munroe walked in. Munroe, however, seemed un...

Punctured: Head Clash Lets Down Rendall Munroe Against Scott Quigg

Rendall Munroe picked up a puncture at the Manchester Velodrome on Saturday in pursuit of Scott Quigg’s junior featherweight Lonsdale belt. After a brace of nip-and-tuck rounds, an on-form Quigg launched a hard right at Munroe in round 3 that the veteran blocked with his gloves, yet, as the Leicester man dipped down and to his right, he collided with the top of Quigg’s head and trashed his right eye. A long, deep and jagged cut burst open along Munroe’s brow, plastering his face with blood to end matters at 0:43. The result was a technical draw.

Munroe (121 ½) was livid, yet replays revealed the collision to have been wholly accidental. At 32, Munroe now faces an uncertain sabbatical as he bids to patch himself up for another run at the British champion. Quigg (121 ¾) can feel equally aggrieved. Despite the fact Sky’s punditry team had already made up their minds that Munroe would know too much for the Bury upstart, Quigg had landed the more precise punches in the opener and ma...

British Beat: Rendall Munroe Looks To Recycle World Title Aspirations Against Young Gun Scott Quigg

British super-bantamweight gaffer Scott Quigg will be bidding to off the man looming one spot ahead of him in the domestic rankings this weekend -- as perplexing as that must sound to the layman -- Nottingham veteran Rendall Munroe. After relinquishing the European championship he guarded with distinction for the better part of two years (in order to mount an unsuccessful alphabet title tilt against the underrated Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka) Munroe aims to capture domestic gold for the first time while solidifying his status as the best 122 pounder of his country. Quigg, 23-0 (17), almost came unstuck last time out against another old hand in the guise of Welshman Jamie Arthur. The Bury stalker, who built a solid defensive base under former taskmaster Brian Hughes, bumbled into a straight left hand which flipped him over onto his face. It was a flash-point that quickened the pen nibs of the critics of Joe Gallagher, the Manchester guru who inherited Quigg’s reins and whose stable h...

You thought Timothy Bradley was brave to keep fighting last week with injured ankles and feet and whatnot? Look at these models. What troopers. Like boxing, there's something a little bit sick and a little bit satisfying about watching that video. Anyway, let's wash the bitter taste of last week out of our collective mouth with some entertaining boxing this week. Neither Tomasz Adamek nor Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. is at the pinnacle of their division (though I guess JCC Jr. is getting there), but I challenge you to find somebody who cares too much. Both guys promise us fun this weekend, so get into it.

NBC Sports Net and Kathy Duva's Main Event Promotions continue to show the big boys how to do more with less with this Saturday's non-title heavyweight clash.
2011 Least Respected Boxer of the Year

Which Top Boxer gets the Least Respect?
Boxing is filled with guys who get way more credit, recognition and attention than they deserve. For example, check out boxing's biggest disappointment of the year, David Haye. However, the sport also is loaded with under the radar would-be stars who simply don't get noticed.
