Ricardo Mayorga Makes His MMA Debut

Mayorga was never a great boxer either, but apparently came into his MMA debut 20lbs over the 155lb weight limit. Here is a description of the fight via BloodyElbow

Mayorga was taken down by Tiffer after his opening salvo of punches and spent the vast majority of the bout’s 10 minutes clinging to Tiffer, who held full mount and did little with it. On the sporadic occasions of Mayorga’s escape, he was taken back down immediately after attempting to punch, right back into full mount.
The awkward-yet-tepid bout finally saw drama in the late second round when Mayorga bucked to escape from mount and rolled into a triangle armbar from Tiffer. Mayorga toughed his way through the hold and freed himself from Tiffer’s subsequent armbar attempt with what appeared to be an illegal knee to the spine just before the round ended. Referee Milton Rosales Toshi did not call a foul, but after consulting with the cageside physician, Tiffer was deemed unfit to continue, giving Mayorga his first MMA wi...

BSO Interview: Legendary Boxing Promoter Don King

Whether you love him or hate him, Don King will definitely go down as one of the most influential figures in the history of boxing, and possibly all of sports period. Don King may no longer be at the forefront of boxing promotions, but he’s still a heavy and visible influence on the game. The man is responsible for bringing us Muhammad Ali and George Foreman’s Rumble in the Jungle, and has promoted some of boxing’s elite fighters and personalities like Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Julio César Chávez, Ricardo Mayorga, Andrew Golota, Félix Trinidad, Roy Jones, Jr., Marco Antonio Barrera, Adrian Diaconu, Nikolai Valuev and Joey Hernandez.
The 81-year-old boxing legend is still a mover and shaker in the game, and sat down with BlackSportsOnline to talk about Don King Productions, his new television network, why america is so great, and how Tavoris Cloud, who faces Bernard Hopkins on March 9, is the next big thing in the sport of boxing.

Should Miguel Cotto retire?

Now that a couple of days separate us from what might be called Austin Trout's upset victory over Miguel Cotto (most experts, including all of ours, picked Cotto to win), calls have begun appearing on boxing forums for Miguel Cotto to hang up the gloves. While there is certainly a strong case that Cotto's best days are behind him, does that really translate into an urgent necessity for him to exit stage left? The answer to that question is "no," as any objective look at the facts would tell you.
The Case for Cotto's Retirement

Credit: Tom Casino / Showtime

The fan case for Cotto's retirement is a simple one, that "Junito" doesn't win big fights anymore, and that case certainly has its merits. You could argue that the last time Miguel Cotto defeated a solid, world class contender was back in 2009, when won a tight Split Decision over Joshua Clottey. Since then, his fights were either victories over fringe contenders (Yuri Foreman, ...

Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout preview & prediction

Fight Prediction: Cotto vs. Trout
On December 1 in Madison Square Garden, Miguel Cotto takes on unbeaten titlist Austin Trout. The 12-rounder is for Trout’s WBA title. The path is defined for Cotto. A win here and it’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the first half of 2013. For Trout, it’s his chance to break into the big time.
Cotto is 32 and Trout is 5 years younger, has a few inches in height, and is a southpaw. You could say Trout is the bigger man, having been at this weight his whole career, even weighing in the mid-160’s on occasion. Cotto first achieved fame in this sport at 140. He has achieved good results at 154, but is probably giving away a little natural size.
That’s about where the advantages on paper end for Trout. He will be facing a guy who has fought at the absolute top level of the sport. He lost his biggest fights, but won plenty of big ones along the way. Cotto probably has a dozen wins that surpass anything Trout ever accomplished in the ring.

Canelo Alvarez is heir apparent to Cinco De Mayo stardom, following Chavez Sr, De La Hoya & more

It has long been understood that if you are a Mexican superstar fighter, you will be fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend, which has traditionally become the date and stage for boxing's biggest mega-events. Thanks to precocious 21-year-old WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez, it's clear that this fistic holiday tradition will continue well into the future.
In that vein, Canelo will be defending his title against Six-Time and Three-Division World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley as the co-main event of "Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto,"on Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. which will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®.
Canelo will be making his second Cinco de Mayo appearance, with his first being on May 1, 2010, when he defeated Jose Miguel Cotto on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's win over Mosley. This year's Cinco de Mayo celebration will also mark the 150thanniversary of the famous Me...

Behold The Man: Sketching Miguel Cotto

2011 may well prove to be Miguel Cotto's last successful year as a prizefighter. It was a year that saw him notch probably his most meaningful victory — a 10th round stoppage of nemesis Antonio Margarito — but also struggle with treadless tire Ricardo Mayorga. Much as "Ecce Homo" betrays glimpses of Nietzsche's impending madness, Cotto's performances in the last two years have evidenced the irreversible deterioration of his abilities. With a lopsided defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather looming, and a timely retirement unlikely, the time to reflect on his career is now.

In the opening chapter of "Ecce Homo," 19th century German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche writes: “I only attack things when every personal quarrel is excluded, when any background of bad experiences is lacking.” Cotto, with a few exceptions, conducted himself according to a similar principle. His press conferences never deteriorated into forums for scurrility or unsanctioned ...

Hank Lundy Hits The Deck Early, Decisions Dannie Williams; Elvin Ayala Outpoints Eric Mitchell

It's a wonder what even just a few minutes of nice, crisp action can do for boxing fans thirsting for something more than controversy and letdowns. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, as that "Sound of Music" lady said. The normal course of "whine for months, delight for days" should hold true for fans, as in just about any other boxing year. But this is the time of year where we expect a little more bang for our bucks. And bucks. And bucks. In what hopes to be the rev-up to this summer's peel out on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights, "Hammerin'" Hank Lundy rebounded from an early knockdown to seize a unanimous decision from Dannie Williams, who got his face near caved inward with jabs in the process. But somewhere in there were some terrific exchanges and top shelf mixing.

Mosley Gets One More Opportunity With Alvarez

By Rich Mancuso
After Shane Mosley met Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden in New York City the day after, he was still a popular fighter. As he took a walk around Times Square fans would tell him that he was a champion. Mosley would hear that it was a fight he won, and he would still be a factor in the welterweight title mix.
“Boxing fans in New York know I won the fight,” Mosley would say. But, the judges thought otherwise about the welterweight title fight in November of 2007. Two of the three had Cotto winning the unanimous decision by a round, and there was a split consensus from media at ringside. Mosley could have won the fight or scored a draw with a good and final 12th round.
After that Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Sergio Mora and Manny Pacquiao have been in the ring with Mosley. So, there can’t be talk that “Sugar Shane” has avoided anyone, or that he quit in his quest to continue on as a three-time division champion. He is headed to the Boxi...

Floyd Mayweather has agreed to step up in weight and challenge three-division World Champion Miguel Cotto for his WBA Super Welterweight World title on Saturday, May 5, at the MGM in Las Vegas. The fight will be televised live on pay-per-view.

Many moons ago, when Floyd Mayweather was just becoming a pay-per-view star and Miguel Cotto was blasting opponents with his left hooks to the body, fans and pundits alike hoped that the two would meet one day in the ring during the prime of their careers.

Much time has since passed, with Cotto sustaining a brutal beating at the hands -- perhaps plaster-filled -- of Antonio Margarito. A subsequent lopsided loss to Manny Pacquiao also did no favors to Cotto's body.

But it is amazing what a couple of wins can do for one's image. Cotto moved up to 154, changed trainers, defeated a game Ricardo Mayorga, and then avenged his loss to Margarito.

Meanwhile, Mayweather has aged like fine wine, preserving his "0" and show...

The Best Versus The Best Still Matters In Boxing

In boxing just about everything is up for debate. We debate on things we can't actually prove nor ever put to the test. Opinions make up the sport of boxing just like clay does a sculpture. The sooner we accept this imperfection, the quicker it brings much better satisfaction in accepting the sport for what it is. My point is that perception makes up the sport. Everything in the sweet science, including why people watch it, is based off opinion and interpretation.

The meaning behind the rules and regulations are man made, the decisions are man influenced and human perception builds its foundation. Considering a fighter exciting can't be scientifically proven, but the human perception builds the so-called reality that those who love boxing think only a slug fest is exciting. Our minds are already programmed to think that way. Minds of boxing fans are built to be biased towards the accepted perception. I say as boxing fans, because others who do not like the sport have a bias perception that it&#39

BoxingWatchers.com 2011 Boxing Fighter of the Year: Andre Ward

Other top ranked boxers had more victories during 2011. Certainly, quite a few produced more explosive wins. But if fulfilling long-held expectations and proving your class against some of the best competition out there means anything - and it really should - then Andre Ward enjoyed a better year than anyone else practicing the sweet science at its highest level
Ward's two in-ring performances came in the semifnals and final of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, and he was simply too much for his opponents. He breezed through former middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham in dominant fashion in May, then proved too fast and too tricky for Carl Froch a few weeks ago. Though critics will point out that he won't have a definitive claim to the title of super middleweight king until he faces Lucian Bute (something that apparently won't be happening in the near future), Ward is correctly being thought of as a top five pound-for-pound fighter.

It's been a long journey for Ward to get to this poi
