Battling Back: Lamont Peterson Vs. Kendall Holt Preview And Prediction

Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 makes a much-needed shift this weekend in its matchmaking from "unwatchable dreck" to "as good as the program gets" with a bout headlined by Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt, two junior welterweights with top-10 talent, both trying to reestablish themselves after long layoffs. No one's saying you ought to ignore the controversial elements involving Peterson's failed drug test last year, and we haven't. But there is a time and place for looking at Peterson-Holt solely as a quality match-up; that place is here and that moment is now, and there's a lot to like about the looks of it. Just on the competitive merits, it's a bout worth staying home to watch if you're not in Washington, D.C., and worth going out to catch live if you are in the nation's capital.

Despite layoffs of 14 months and nearly a year, respectively, Peterson and Holt are not far removed from the big leagues of HBO. Peterson's last fig...

Lamont Peterson Vs. Kendall Holt: Caring, Not Caring About The Past; Preparing For Friday Night

(From left to right: Lamont Peterson; trainer Barry Hunter; ring announcer Henry Jones; Kendall Holt)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- There is a circular schizophrenia inherent in the build-up to Friday Night Fights' Lamont Peterson-Kendall Holt bout. The card is dubbed "Redemption," but Peterson and his crew don't ever feel they did anything wrong to make it so the junior welterweight tested positive for a banned substance last year. Peterson said at a news conference Wednesday that he knows he'll never get away from that test, but is at peace with himself over it. Peterson's trainer/manager Barry Hunter wanted the news media to get away from asking about it after a handful of questions on the subject, instead suggesting the focus should be on what is, indeed, a nice fight on paper.

And Holt -- he said the only time he considers the questions regarding Peterson and performance enhancing drugs is when the media asks them.

It's simply not possible to thi...

Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt set for Feb 22nd in Washington DC

Lamont Peterson's return to the ring is set for February 22nd, in his hometown of Washington D.C. Peterson will be defending his IBF Junior Welterweight Title - that being what it is - against the hard-punching Kendall Holt, in the main event of an ESPN2 Friday Night Fights card at the D.C. Armory.

Peterson last fought in December 2011, also in Washington D.C., and took home a disputed Split Decision over Amir Khan. The win went from disputed to extremely controversial in the aftermath of the cancelled rematch between Peterson and Khan, when news broke about Peterson's failed drug tests and past usage of potentially performance enhancing drugs.
Yet, Peterson was never formally disciplined, suspended or fined. While the WBA returned its title to Khan, the IBF allowed Peterson to retain their strap. So here we are, Peterson's returning as technically a titleholder, and he gets to make a defense. Friday Night Fights against Kendall Holt...

Top 10 hardest punchers in boxing today

For sheer drama, excitement and exhilaration, there are few, if any, spectacles in sports that can compare to witnessing the sudden, stunning and memorable ending that comes with a one-punch knockout. Below is a Top 10 list of today’s heaviest-handed hitters compiled by renowned boxing historian and Showtime analyst Steve Farhood.
Farhood’s Top 10 Hardest Punchers in Boxing Today

Credit: Will Hart - HBO

1. Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO’s): The purest right hand in the game. Just ask welterweight Mike Jones, who in June was ahead on points when Bailey exploded with a straight right in round 10, and a fight-ending right uppercut in the 11th round. Bailey’s hook can be devastating as well. In 1999, he won his first world title on Showtime with a 41-second left hook knockout of Carlos Gonzalez.
2. Jhonny Gonzalez: History tells us that rangy, long-armed fighters can be devastating punchers (Thomas Hearns and Bob Foster, for example). Mexico’s Gonzalez has carried his power from ban...

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Vs. Miguel Cotto: The Ultimate Guide

Don't follow boxing very often, but you want to know the gist of Saturday's mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto? Follow boxing all the time, and want one place that rounds up all the links about the junior middleweight showdown you could ever want? This Ultimate Guide to the May 5 pay-per-view bout is for you, no matter what kind you are.

We begin, per usual, with a review of this site's coverage this week. I examined what was at stake for both Mayweather and Cotto; Alex McClintock previewed the undercard; I broke down the keys to the fight in two installments; Scott Kraus pointed his satirical gaze at the fight; I provided a final preview and prediction; and the entire staff gathered 'round a table and gave their thoughts on the bout.Nothing gets me pumped up for a big fight more than actually watching each fighter's Greatest Hits videos, as selected by HBO. They're below. For what it's worth, the ones they picked for Cotto are excel...

Miguel Cotto looks to solidify all-timer status amongst Puerto Rican boxing legends

Plus Felix Trinidad gives his thoughts on Cotto and how Cotto can defeat Mayweather
Many great fighters have come from the boxing-rich island of Puerto Rico, one of those being WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto, who hails from the city of Caguas and now carries the torch passed to him by the last great Puerto Rican pugilist, Felix "Tito" Trinidad.
Cotto is nearing the biggest and most difficult fight of his career taking place this Saturday, May 5 against Floyd "Money" Mayweather at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. which will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®. Though he is the defending champion putting his 154-pound belt on the line, in many ways he is the challenger. That is simply because his opponent is Mayweather, undefeated at 42-0, a guaranteed first ballot Hall of Fame inductee and one of the greatest fighters of this era.

Behold The Man: Sketching Miguel Cotto

2011 may well prove to be Miguel Cotto's last successful year as a prizefighter. It was a year that saw him notch probably his most meaningful victory — a 10th round stoppage of nemesis Antonio Margarito — but also struggle with treadless tire Ricardo Mayorga. Much as "Ecce Homo" betrays glimpses of Nietzsche's impending madness, Cotto's performances in the last two years have evidenced the irreversible deterioration of his abilities. With a lopsided defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather looming, and a timely retirement unlikely, the time to reflect on his career is now.

In the opening chapter of "Ecce Homo," 19th century German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche writes: “I only attack things when every personal quarrel is excluded, when any background of bad experiences is lacking.” Cotto, with a few exceptions, conducted himself according to a similar principle. His press conferences never deteriorated into forums for scurrility or unsanctioned ...

For Christ Sakes, Give Cotto A Shot!

Growing up in Guaynabo Puerto Rico throughout the 90’s, we were all very proud of our athletes. The main staples mentioned were mainly baseball players such as Ivan Rodriguez and Igor Gonzalez; and, some basketball players such as Piculin Ortiz. But no name rang larger and was mentioned with more pride and fervor than a one Felix “Tito” Trinidad. As anyone can attest during the late 90’s and thru the mid 2000’s, every time he had a fight, the whole island practically shut down in order to see the man fight. When he won and came back to his homeland, he received the welcome of a conquering hero. Fans all over would always be yelling, “Tito! Tito!” everywhere he went. Across all Puerto Rico, you would see his image associated with all sorts of different products, the most appropriate being Panadol, which was a Tylenol type pain relief pill which he undoubtedly took tons of after some of his fights. His gregarious nature and pride in his country made him an icon and today he is still very warmly

Ugly Fruit: Antonio Margarito Vs. Miguel Cotto II Preview And Prediction

There's been something of an evolution of the Antonio Margarito tale: What once was grotesque to many of us (and for some of it, it still is) has now become a dramatic storyline in advance of his rematch with Miguel Cotto Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view. With the first fight such a classic, with both men a bit past their best and therefore matching up fairly evenly, with the controversy over Margarito's injured eye nearly derailing the fight and with the victor hard to predict, this bout does have appeal for a lot of reasons -- a lot to others, some to me.There are st...
