Weekend Afterthoughts On Jamie McDonnell, Ricky Burns, Kazuto Ioka And Others

Since Patrick Connor already had you covered for Friday Night Fights and I already had you covered for ShoBox on an already-light week, there normally would be little need for any Weekend Afterthoughts. But a few contenders of note were in action, including a few who found themselves amid some drama, so here's a drizzling of W.A.'s:

Jamie McDonnell vs. Julio Ceja. This was the bout of the weekend -- two contenders wringing every ounce of sweat out of their bodies and fighting at a high level. In the end, McDonnell had just a smidge more technique, movement and overall ability than the more brawling-oriented Ceja, pulled away for a majority decision and probably established himself as a top-5 bantamweight in the process (although it's a thinner division these days than just a year or two ago). McDonnell pulled away in the 12th after a hotly-contested 11th where Ceja landed a big left hook. I did not closely score the fight because most people seemed to agree while...

Ricky Burns calls for fans to come to Friday’s weigh-in, looks forward to great fight atmosphere

Ricky Burns wants his fans to give José González an early taste of the noise he’ll face on fight night when the pair weigh-in for the clash at the St. Enoch’s Centre in Glasgow at 1pm on Friday.
Burns defends his WBO lightweight title against the mandatory challenger from Puerto Rico live on Sky Sports HD1 from 8pm on Saturday night in Betfair’s ‘Fighting Pride of Scotland’ and the Coatbridge star has asked his fans to turn out in force as they hit the scales on Friday.“It would be great to get all the fans down to the St. Enoch’s Centre and show José what he’s got in store on Saturday night,” said Burns. “The atmosphere in the Emirates Arena is going to be electric and he’ll never have experienced anything like it before.
“I believe I’ve got the best fans in the world and the noise they made last time out against Kevin Mitchell was incredible. It gave me a massive lift and they played a huge part in the best night of my career so far. I’m looking forward to more of the same on

Undefeated Jose Gonzalez ready to take out Ricky Burns

Jose Gonzalez has warned Ricky Burns he’s willing to go to the trenches to rip the Scotsman’s WBO lightweight title from him in Betfair’s ‘Fighting Pride of Scotland’ show on May 11 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, live on Sky Sports.
The Puerto Rican travels to Scotland confident of upsetting the Coatbridge star, and despite a formidable KO record of 17 from 22 fights, the unbeaten mandatory challenger says he’s prepared to go the distance to rip the title from Burns’ hands.
“I’ve been able to get a lot of knockouts through my power but on May 11 I have to box as well as Ricky Burns from the first bell until the last,” said Gonzalez. “The fans over there can expect to see me at my best and be pleased with the show that they’re going to see. We know we’ve got a tough fight and it’ll be very hard to win on points in Scotland but we will be victorious.
“Burns is a fighter that likes to take the initiative, so I have to fight like him. If he throws lots of punches, then I’ll th

Ricky Burns to defend WBO title

Ricky Burns will defend his WBO lightweight title against Puerto Rico's Jose Gonzalez in Glasgow on May 11.

Burns, who has not fought since retaining his belt against Kevin Mitchell in September, has been ordered to face the mandatory challenger by the WBO.

It will be Burns' first fight since splitting with promoter Frank Warren and signing with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport.

Burns (35-2, 10 knockouts) had previously been scheduled for a unification bout against IBF champion Miguel Vazquez but that fight was canceled.

Burns facing suit after switch?

WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns is facing a possible civil lawsuit after switching promoters to force the cancellation of the unification bout against IBF holder Miguel Vazquez next month.

Burns was presented Monday as the newest fighter for promoter Matchroom, causing Frank Warren to claim a breach of contract and announce his intention to sue the 29-year-old Scot for ''substantial damages.''

Warren says ''Burns is under binding promotional and management contracts.''

Burns (35-2, 10 knockouts) hasn't fought since retaining his belt against Kevin Mitchell in September but had been due to fight Vazquez at Wembley Arena on April 20 in a postponed contest.

Burns says ''I just felt over the last year or so things hadn't been working out'' as ''there were a few issues that needed working out.''

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez now off entirely?

Earlier this week we reported that Ricky Burns lightweight unification fight against Miguel Vazquez had been rescheduled, however, it now looks like the fight might be off altogether.
The fight, which was originally scheduled for the March 16th, looks to be in serious jeopardy after Burns' manager Alex Morrison told the Scotsman that they would be parting company with promoter Frank Warren. The Burns-Vasquez clash had been set to be headline Warrens' Rule Britannia card but the postponement of the fight until the April 20th has seemingly led to the WBO champion weighing up his options.
Burns hasn't fought since September when he stopped domestic rival Kevin Mitchell in emphatic style with a 4th round stoppage and the Burns camp has become frustrated with his inactivity in the ring. The Scot had already seen his December clash against Liam Walsh and then Jose Ocampo cancelled and the Vazquez postponement seems to be one too many for the lightweight champion.
Morrison told...

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez rescheduled for April 20

The highly anticipated British quadruple-header originally scheduled for March 16, headlined by a Lightweight title unification fight between Ricky Burns and Miguel Vazquez, has been postponed until April 20. The core reason behind this was apparently a case of food poisoning or a viral infection suffered by Vazquez.

Additionally, the four-fight marquee lineup is down to three, with George Groves withdrawing from the fight, and moving from Frank Warren to rival Matchroom Sport. He'll be getting right into action, and then plans to fight on the May 25 Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch card.
Apparently both of the other bouts have been in question, too.
Nathan Cleverly has also been battling some sort of stomach virus, while Dereck Chisora still has not been re-licensed. In other words, whether Vazquez got food poisoning or not, this card seemed doomed, at least for its originally scheduled date.
Hopefully everything gets put back together and all the fighter...

Burns-Vazquez bout postponed

The world lightweight unification bout between Ricky Burns and Miguel Vazquez has been postponed by a month because the Mexican fighter has a viral infection.

Burns, the British fighter who holds the WBO title, and IBF champion Vazquez had been scheduled to meet on March 16 at the Wembley Arena in London.

Promoters said Monday the fight has been rescheduled to April 20 at the same venue.

Promoter Frank Warren says "it's very unfortunate that Vazquez has had to withdraw so close to the fight, but it is on medical grounds, which is beyond my control, due to his viral infection, and we have his doctor's certificate confirming this."

On the same card, Nathan Cleverly will put his WBO light-heavyweight title on the line against Robin Krasniqi of Kosovo.

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez preview & prediction

Fight Pick & Preview: Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez Preview and Prediction
On March 16 in Wembley Stadium, IBF champion Miguel Vazquez and WBO titleholder Ricky Burns meet in a lightweight title unification bout. Both fighters are world champions, but still looking for respect. A win here lends instant credibility to the victor. Burns, on a 20-bout winning streak and fighting much closer to home, is a favorite, but a close and well-contested match is expected.
There are some things they have in common. Their records are similar and both stand 5’10”--tall for the 135-pound class. They are both on winning streaks and are probably better fighters than what they are given credit for. Each man is a cerebral fighter with an abundance of toughness, craft, and ambition.

Miguel Vazquez of Mexico and Ricky Burns of Britain will put their world lightweight titles on the line when they meet in a unification fight in London on March 16.

Vazquez will be defending his IBF belt for the sixth time since August 2010, having lost only three of his 36 fights.

Burns saw plans to defend his WBO belt dashed recently when two planned opponents withdrew from title fights.

The bout will form part of a night of action at Wembley Arena called ''Rule Britannia,'' which will also include a light-heavyweight world title fight between champion Nathan Cleverly of Britain and Robin Krasniqi of Kosovo.

Burns retains WBO lightweight belt

Ricky Burns of Scotland stopped Kevin Mitchell of England in the fourth round to keep his minor WBO lightweight title a second time before a partisan crowd on Saturday.

After Burns sent Mitchell to the canvas a second time, referee Terry O'Connor stepped in and handed Burns the TKO win, his 20th in a row.

Burns (35-2, 10 KO) quickly took charge against Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO), and really made his mark in the fourth when a left-right combination dropped Mitchell. The Englishman recovered, but a big right put him down again. Mitchell survived the count but not another flurry, when O'Connor decided to intervene.
