The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Carl Froch, Delvin Rodriguez And Roman Gonzalez

Gotta love Giovani Segura – not only is he an action hero, but he’s pushing the already stretched frontiers of sponsorship in boxing by emblazoning the name of a registration services company on his Julio Cesar Chavez style headband. Who knows what this week will bring in terms of advertising, but it’ll have some good boxing. Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler fight on HBO in a card made only slightly less appetizing by the scratching of the Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute co-feature. There’s also a few other bits and bobs, so check it out.

Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II, Saturday, HBO, London. Has it really been three years since these guys last fought? Geez, time flies when people are punching each other in the face. The intervening time hasn’t done much to take the lustre off this super middleweight match-up. Since Kessler’s original victory, Froch (30-2, 22 KO) has enhanced his prestige with his ridiculously competitive schedule while the Dane has mainly treaded water...

Weekend Afterthoughts On Jamie McDonnell, Ricky Burns, Kazuto Ioka And Others

Since Patrick Connor already had you covered for Friday Night Fights and I already had you covered for ShoBox on an already-light week, there normally would be little need for any Weekend Afterthoughts. But a few contenders of note were in action, including a few who found themselves amid some drama, so here's a drizzling of W.A.'s:

Jamie McDonnell vs. Julio Ceja. This was the bout of the weekend -- two contenders wringing every ounce of sweat out of their bodies and fighting at a high level. In the end, McDonnell had just a smidge more technique, movement and overall ability than the more brawling-oriented Ceja, pulled away for a majority decision and probably established himself as a top-5 bantamweight in the process (although it's a thinner division these days than just a year or two ago). McDonnell pulled away in the 12th after a hotly-contested 11th where Ceja landed a big left hook. I did not closely score the fight because most people seemed to agree while...

Brian Viloria Upset By Juan Francisco Estrada, Zou Shiming Wins Pro Debut On Historic China Show

(Zou Shiming; photo credit: Chris Farina, Top Rank)

What might have been the biggest viewing audience for a live boxing match in human history got itself a good show Saturday, then it watched a win for its national hero.

From the standpoint of action in the ring, the most significant outcome on the Macau, China card that aired Saturday on HBO2 was flyweight Brian Viloria dropping a decision to hungry young Juan Francisco Estrada. It was a fan-friendly slugfest with an upset winner, given how Viloria has climbed into consensus pound-for-pound top-10 status in the past couple years.

The "event" was significant in a whole other way: As with most pro debuts, Chinese Olympian gold medalist Zou Shiming's pro debut had only ceremonial importance and was non-competitive. But that event was pure Top Rank genius. For years, Top Rank's Bob Arum has talked of bringing a card to Macau so frequently that it became a running joke, not because the idea was unsound but ...

Macau preview: Viloria vs. Estrada & Martinez vs. Magdaleno

Fight Picks & Previews: Brian Viloria vs. Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Martinez vs. Diego Magdaleno
On April 6, boxing heads to Macau, and while Chinese Olympic hero Zou Shiming maintains headliner status in his own neck of the woods, the real attractions for fight fans stateside are the two championship bouts on the undercard. At Flyweight, Brian Viloria looks to defend against Juan Francisco Estrada, and at Super Featherweight, Roman "Rocky" Martinez squares off against the undefeated Diego Magdaleno. Here's a look at what you can expect from each of these title bouts.

WealthTV’s live boxing programming efforts for 2012 have been recognized by the Boxing Writers Association of America, BWAA, and by ESPN’s Dan Rafael, arguably the leading authority on boxing. The BWAA recently nominated six fights for Fight of the Year candidates. Two of the six fights were featured live on WealthTV, namely Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria v. Hernan “Tyson” Marquez and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez v. Juan Francisco Estrada. (Of the remaining four fights, one was featured on Showtime and three were featured on HBO, including the Manny Pacquiao v. Juan Manual Marquez IV fight.)
The BWAA also nominated world champion Brian Viloria for Fighter of the Year. Viloria, who was featured on WealthTV’s Fight Night on November 17, unified the WBO and WBA Flyweight World Championship with a victory over Hernan Marquez.

Weekend Afterthoughts On Adrien Broner As Boxing's Future, Brian Viloria Vs. Roman Gonzalez And More

Every weekend lately, it's Fight of the Year candidates and Round of the Year candidates and Knockout of the Year candidates. That particular KO of the Year candidate was a bit on the sickening side, because it was touch and go at the time whether Juan Garcia would get back up from that big blow from lightweight prospect Angelo Santana. He did, and Santana is now one of the bright spots of ShoBox this year overall in what has been a less than ideal season for the Showtime series (even if I think some have dissed it more than I would).

You don't get that many Blank of the Year candidates without it being busy, and it sure was. TQBR alone had scribes at four different live shows, and covered two others besides. That means we don't have to go into quite the usual Weekend Afterthoughts depth we might otherwise. But it's nice to have tasty things to chew on, compared to some sour stretches of boxing's 2012.

Brian Viloria Brutalizes Hernan Marquez, Roman Gonzalez Wins In A War

It's true. The Brian Viloria vs. Hernan Marquez card on WealthTV just didn't get the same type of pre-fight hype and attention as other cards that happened this weekend. And perhaps it made sense, as the other guys were heavier, have more popular names and sell more tickets. But some of us knew. Others as well.

In what may wind up being the very best top-to-bottom televised boxing card of the year, fans were dodging punches all over the place just to get a look at the action, which was excellent.

Viloria and Marquez engaged in a momentum-shifting, tough 10 rounds and change of power punching that left both men exhausted, but only Viloria with his glove raised. And in the co-feature, Roman Gonzalez skirmished back and forth against Juan Francisco Estrada over the 12 round distance, and very entertainingly.

Brian Viloria-Hernan Marquez & Roman Gonzalez on Wealth TV this Saturday

This Saturday night at Los Angeles Sports Arena WBO Flyweight champion Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria takes on WBA champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez in a unification bout that will prove 112 pound supremacy. The bout can be seen live in the United States on WealthTV and www.wealthtv.com beginning at 9pm eastern.
Viloria (31-3, 18 KO’s) is thirty-one years old of Waipahu, Hawaii was a 2000 United States Olympian and won his first seventeen bouts before scoring an explosive first round knockout over Erick Ortiz to win the WBC Light Flyweight crown. After one defense, Viloria lost the crown to Omar Nino Romero. Viloria and Romero fought to a disputed draw in the rematch which was later ruled a no-contest after Romero failed a post-fight drug test. Viloria then lost to Edgar Sosa in a bout for the vacant title.
Viloria went on to win five straight bouts before winning the IBF belt with a majority decision over Ulises Solis. Viloria defended that belt once before being stopped by Carlos T...

Top 10 hardest punchers in boxing today

For sheer drama, excitement and exhilaration, there are few, if any, spectacles in sports that can compare to witnessing the sudden, stunning and memorable ending that comes with a one-punch knockout. Below is a Top 10 list of today’s heaviest-handed hitters compiled by renowned boxing historian and Showtime analyst Steve Farhood.
Farhood’s Top 10 Hardest Punchers in Boxing Today

Credit: Will Hart - HBO

1. Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO’s): The purest right hand in the game. Just ask welterweight Mike Jones, who in June was ahead on points when Bailey exploded with a straight right in round 10, and a fight-ending right uppercut in the 11th round. Bailey’s hook can be devastating as well. In 1999, he won his first world title on Showtime with a 41-second left hook knockout of Carlos Gonzalez.
2. Jhonny Gonzalez: History tells us that rangy, long-armed fighters can be devastating punchers (Thomas Hearns and Bob Foster, for example). Mexico’s Gonzalez has carried his power from ban...

The incredible boxing journey for undefeated featherweight prospect Patrick "The Punisher" Hyland (27-0, 12 KOs) continues after his recent victory by eight-round unanimous decision (79-70, 79-71, 79-71) overdangerous Dominican Carlos "El Flaco" Fulgencio (19-8-1, 12 KOs) at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester, New York.
"I enjoyed the fight and was sharp," Dublin-native Hyland said about his fight with Fulgencio. "I dropped him at the end of the first and caught him again in the second. I didn't want to punch myself out, so I eased up and boxed the rest of the fight. My previous fight only lasted four rounds and I needed the rounds. He came to beat me and kept coming forward. We went toe-to-toe and he caught me with a few shots. He tested my chin. I'll be back in the gym later this week and want to be fighting again by the beginning of November, hopefully, in a 10 or 12 round fight."

The Horrible New Ring Magazine Championship Policy

Having true champions in boxing has never been the cure for what ails the sport; there are so many tumors on pro boxing, no one cure can solve everything. But every couple weeks, I have a conversation that goes like this: Me: "Yeah, I write about boxing." Them: "Oh. I don't follow that sport." Me: "Why not?" One of the most common answers: "I dunno, there are so many belts, I can't keep track of who the champion is."Since 2002, the closest thing boxing has had to a true champion is the owner of the Ring magazine belt in any given division. As of Thursday, that is no longer true. The Ring announced changes to its championship policy that, flatly, killed any claim the magazine can make to being custodians of an authentic championship lineage.

For those unfamiliar with the previous policy, the only way one could become the champion of a division was to beat the existing champion, or, in the event of a vacancy (for instance, if the cha...

WBA junior flyweight champ Roman "El Chocolatito" Gonzalez (31-0, 26 KOs) will look to make the fourth defense of his title against former WBO junior flyweight titlist Ramon Garcia Hirales (16-3-1, 9 KOs) Saturday at the Fairplex Arena in Pomona, Calif.

Gonzalez, even at only 24 years of age, is a two-division world champ and regarded as one of the sport's best offensive fighters with an 8-0 record and five knockouts in world title fights. In his last bout, a non-title contest in March, he knocked out overmatched Manuel Jimenez in the first round.

Gonzalez's current run as 108-pound champ began in 2010 with a second-round knockout of defending WBA interim titlist Francisco Rosas. The Nicaragua native was later given full champ status by the sanctioning body.

Mexican challenger Hirales briefly held the WBO junior flyweight title, beating Jesus Geles for the belt in April of last year. He would lose the title, however, via unanimous decision in his first defense, six months later. The south

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Bernard Hopkings, Chad Dawson, Thomas Ooisthuizen And ...

Line 'em up, knock 'em down. They had the right idea back in the day. The big fight this week features Bernard Hopkins, who's about as old as the footage in that GIF, re-doing his abortive and “controversial” bout with Chad Dawson. Fox Deportes has the best potential action fights of the week with a double header from Cancun headlined by Jhonny Gonzalez. There are a few other titbits too, so let's get to it.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson and Seth Mitchell vs. Chazz Witherspoon, Saturday, HBO, Atlantic City. The light heavyweight rematch between the ageless Hopkins and personality-free Dawson is a lot more popular the second time round. It might have something to do with the the “controversy” or maybe the fact that it's not on pay-per-view, it's on the East Coast and tickets are apparently selling well. TQBR founder Tim will have more in-depth analysis of the fight, though I have no idea what he's going to say. Their first bout ended with body...

2011 Boxing Knockout Of The Year Nominees

Welcome to The Queensberry Rules' annual year-end awards, starting today and continuing throughout the week. Here's how we do it around these parts: The major categories are Knockout of the Year, Round of the Year, Fight of the Year and Fighter of the Year. The final leg is a pu-pu platter of awards ranging from Trainer of the Year to more frivolous topics. For each category, I give five finalists, with video and/or relevant info. You tell me if my finalists and honorable mentions are lacking, and give your vote on who you think should win. Maybe you sway me to adjust the list, and maybe you sway me on the eventual winner. On the second day after a category is introduced, I give that winner and explain why. (There are no major fights left in 2011, but we reserve the right to change our category winners if something crazy happens.) So, up first: Knockout of the Year and Round of the Year candidates. On deck: Knockout of the Year and Round of the Year winners, ...

Right here, you can find a video with highlights of Nishioka vs. Marquez, as well as the Roman Gonzalez vs. Omar Soto fight, and the post-fight Nishioka-Marquez press conference.
