Povetkin stops Wawrzyk in Round 3, keeps WBA belt

Alexander Povetkin stopped Andrzej Wawrzyk by a technical knockout at 2:29 of the third round Friday to retain his WBA heavyweight title.

The 33-year-old Russian, making is fourth successful title defense, improved to 26-0 with 18 knockouts after flooring Wawrzyk in the second round and again in the third with a right to the head. The referee allowed Wawrzyk to continue before stopping the bout with 31 seconds left in the round.

Povetkin, who outpointed Ruslan Chagaev in August 2011 for the then-vacant title, will next face WBA ''super champion'' Wladimir Klitschko in September.

It was the first loss for Wawrzyk, who fell to 27-1.

David Haye opponents: Povetkin or Chagaev top 2 choices

David Haye has a fight date of June 29th at the Manchester Arena, a plan for making a go at Vitali Klitschko, but no opponents as of yet. The plan as outlined by Haye is to make two fights, and then corner Vitali Klitschko with a choice of either giving Haye a shot at his WBC title or bowing out of boxing with ducking Haye as his last act. It's an ambitious scheme, and therefore a classic example of Haye's braggadocio. Yet that vacant fight date is still out there, and the question stands: who will Haye's next opponent be?
The Klitschko Angle

One thing is for sure: David Haye won't be fighting anyone who might get him closer to Dr. Ironfist in June. The WBC #1 and #2 contenders, Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne, are already duking it out over the mandatory challenger status that Haye might crave.
Haye is ranked #6, and all the guys whom he might fight to claim the #1 slot after Arreola and Stiverne move out of the way -- Tyson Fury, Johnathon Bank...

Undefeated cruiserweight Wadi Camacho returns on December 8

Wadi Camacho: Toks Is Gonna Get Some Real Punishment
In January this year Canning Town’s rising Cruiserweight star Wadi ‘Machoman’ Camacho won his first professional fight, beating Northern Ireland based Ugandan Moses Matovu.
Just under eleven months later, on Saturday, December 8th, the Barcelona born Cruiser Bruiser will step into the ring at the London Olympia for his first local title fight, when he takes on former World Title challenger Toks Owoh for the Southern Area strap at the Matchroom Sport promoted ‘Betfair Christmas Cracker’ event.
The meteoric rise of ‘Machoman’ lies firmly in the hands of his promoter, Matchroom Sports own Eddie Hearn and his manager/coach Bryan Lawrence, along with a little bit of help from the ‘big boys’ at Canning Town’s TRAD TKO Boxing Gym.

Povetkin TKOs Rahman, keeps WBA belt

Undefeated Alexander Povetkin of Russia retained his WBA heavyweight title with a second-round technical knockout of American challenger Hasim Rahman on Saturday.

After a cagey first round, Povetkin exploded into life in the next, delivering a series of blows to which the 39-year-old former WBC, IBF and IBO champion had no response.

Referee Gustavo Padilla of Panama had no option but to call it off 1 minute, 36 seconds into the round with Povetkin able to pick his shots at will.

''I prepared myself well. It's a pity I couldn't show it for that long,'' said the 33-year-old Povetkin, who improved to 25-0 (17 KOs).

Rahman dropped to 50-8-2 (41 KOs) after his first bout since June 2011.

The fight was Povetkin's third defense of the WBA title he earned by beating Ruslan Chagaev on points in August 2011. The belt was vacated by Wladimir Klitschko when the Ukrainian was elevated to ''super champion'' by the WBA after his win over David Haye.

British boxing beat: Bellew stops Miranda, Fury looking to Chagaev

In this week's installment of the British Boxing Beat, we look back at last night's strong outing from Tony Bellew, as he easily got rid of Edison Miranda, stopping him in 9 rounds. In other news, heavyweight Tyson Fury may be looking towards a huge test in Ruslan Chagaev, and a certain cricketer may be stepping through the ropes to pursue professional boxing.
Bellew disposes of Miranda
The events of last night confirmed that Edison Miranda has completed the journey many formerly world-class boxers take, descending to no more than a dangerous gatekeeper, as Liverpudlian Tony Bellew took him apart in nine rounds.
This was the first time in Bellew’s eventful career so far he went into the ring with someone who had such a sizeable upper hand on him in terms of experience at the highest levels. However, he did not appear fazed, taking his time and forcing Miranda to quit on his knee in the ninth following a barrage of well-placed body shots and straight right hands.

Huck ready for Povetkin in WBA heavyweight bout

WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck of Germany insists he has what it takes to make it at heavyweight.

The 27-year-old Huck faces undefeated Alexander Povetkin for the Russian's WBA title on Saturday night.

Huck says he ''would not have taken the fight if I didn't believe in myself.''

The 32-year-old Povetkin will be making his second defense of the title he claimed by defeating Ruslan Chagaev last August.

It had been Wladimir Klitschko's title following the Ukrainian's victory over David Haye the month before, but was declared vacant when the WBA elevated Klitschko to ''super champion'' status.

The Yugoslav-born Huck takes a 34-1 (25 KOs) record into the bout. Povetkin is 23-0 (16 KOs).

Preview: Alexander Povetkin vs. Marco Huck

Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KOs) will face Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KOs) Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany. The fight will be televised live in the U.S. exclusively by EPIX. As with past boxing shows carried by EPIX, it will also stream live on EPIXHD.com. Boxing fans can sign up for the stream for free with an email address.

Povetkin is best known for a few things that aren't really high on a fighter's priority list. First, he's a heavyweight titlist ... but not really. Povetkin defeated Ruslan Chagaev in August 2011 to be something the WBA is calling its "regular" champion after having "elevated" Wladimir Klitschko, who defeated David Haye for the real WBA title, to "super" champion. All that really means is that Povetkin, while carrying around a WBA title belt, isn't the real WBA champion. Klitschko is. As such, Povetkin is not recognized as champion by this publication, though you may see him bandied around as such in other places.

Next, Povetkin is known as a pro

Fans of "The Russian Giant," Nikolai Valuev, who have been wondering when the big guy will return to the ring can stop wondering. The answer is at least five years, and possibly never, as Valuev has been elected to and sworn in as a deputy in the Russian Duma (the lower house of the national legislature). The Russian heavyweight has been inactive since 2009.
Valuev ran for office under the United Russia party, the leading political party in Russia whose standard bearer is de facto Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Valuev was quoted by RIA-Novosti as saying "While I’m in parliament I should forget about appearing in the ring. It’s impossible to combine such a responsible job and serious preparations for the bouts." It seems serving in the Duma is Valuev's golden parachute from his boxing career. Valuev is 38 years old.
Valuev won notoriety mostly because of his enormous size: he stands 7'2" tall, weighs in routinely above 315 lbs...

Boswell eyes American heavyweight dream

Cedric Boswell is looking to become the first American boxer in five years to hold any of the major world heavyweight belts when he meets WBA champion Alexander Povetkin on Saturday.

The 42-year-old Boswell has won 14 successive fights since the only loss of his career to Jameel McCline in 2003.

The only win of note since then was a 10-round decision over then-45-year-old Oliver McCall in March. McCall won the WBC title from Lennox Lewis in 1994, defended it against Larry Holmes, then lost it to Frank Bruno the next year.

Boswell, in the leadup to his first shot at one of the major belts, said ''the American dream will soundly defeat the Russian pretender.''

Povetkin took the vacant WBA title by beating Ruslan Chagaev on points in August. Wladimir Klitschko gave up the WBA title he won from David Haye when he was made a ''super champion'' by the WBA.

Povetkin now faces Boswell, a former sparring partner.

''It will be an interesting fight for me, for everyone,'
