David Price vs. Tony Thompson preview & prediction

Fight Preview & Pick: David Price vs. Tony Thompson
On February 23 in Liverpool, hometown boy David Price takes on veteran southpaw American Tony Thompson in a match-up of big heavyweights. Thompson is 6’5” and in the 250 range, while Price stands a towering 6’8” while usually checking in at around the same poundage. The 2008 Olympic bronze medal winner Price is taking a step up in class.

Date: February 23, 2013
Site: Echo Arena, Liverpool, England
Weight Class: Heavyweights: 12 Rounds

David Price, 15-0 (13 KOs), Liverpool, England
vs.
Tony Thompson, 36-3 (24 KOs), Washington, D.C.
It’s a calculated risk. Beating Thompson would carry with it a certain level of prestige, being that the only man to defeat Thompson in the past dozen years was Wladimir Klitschko. At the same time, Thompson is 41 years old and his name value probably outweighs his actual merit as a fighter. To Thompson’s credit, it hasn’t been easy for him to book big fights, but he’s still a guy who has neve...

David Price vs. Audley Harrison televised on Wealth TV in the US

WealthTV has secured the live United States television rights for the United Kingdom heavyweight showdown between a pair of former Olympians, rising star David Price and battle-tested veteran Audley Harrison, on October 13 (starting at 3 p.m. ET) from Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.
Price vs. Harrison continues WealthTV's commitment to become a major player in live telecasting of world-class boxing, as well as the network's focus on the heavyweight division. In July, WealthTV showcased world heavyweight contender Tyson Fury's (19-0, 14 KOs) fifth-round technical knockout of veteran Vinny Maddalone. The Price-Harrison announcement comes on the heels of WealthTV's entertaining "Ironbound Throwdown," a Main Events card featuring top heavyweights Tomasz "Goral" Adamek against Travis "Freight Train" Walker that aired September 8.
"We anticipate upwards of 30 to 40 fights on WealthTV through 2013," WealthTV President Charles ...

Klitschko readiness rating: The UK’s great hope, David Price

Is David Price ready for a Klitschko?

David Price is a man-mountain from Liverpool. Standing at 6'8", the Englishman’s stature is as imposing as it gets, even in the heavyweight division. Size is a critical factor in the land of the modern giants, but it is not everything, just ask Nikolai Valuev. Right here we'll evaluate David Price's chances at facing and conquering one of the Klitschko brothers, in the latest edition of our ongoing Klitschko readiness rating series.
It is impossible to weigh the perfect balance between the physical, mental and technical when assessing a boxer, but there is no good in placing excessive value on any one over the other three. Eddie Chambers would love to have some of Jack Dempsey’s famed knockout power, Tomasz Adamek would give anything to stand shoulder to shoulder with Primo Carnera, and if Audley Harrison had Rocky Marciano’s mentality he would have had far greater ease transferring the success of his amateur achievements to ...

British Beat: Should Team GB’s Olympic Boxers Cash In Or Ride On To Brazil?

(Some members of the British 2008 class)With the fat lady still echoing around the Olympic Stadium at the culmination of London 2012, Great Britain’s Olympic boxing squad can expect the wooing process to begin in earnest. Contract offers will already be in transit as promoters bid to prise them away from performance director Robert McCracken before introducing them into the jungle of the professional ranks. But, should the likes of Anthony Joshua, Anthony Ogogo, Fred Evans and Luke Campbell gamble their national hero status in order to turn pro? Here's a look at how GB’s class of 2008 (Olympic weight class in brackets, followed by current professional records) have fared since the flame went out in Beijing in a bid to uncover what might lie ahead for the men following in their wake.

David Price (Super Heavyweight) 13-0 (11 KOs) After securing bronze in China, Merseyside’s 6’ 8” colossus turned over under the stewardship of veteran promoter Frank Maloney. After two year...

Top 10 British boxing prospects

The Best British Prospects in Boxing 2012

When assessing a prospect, it is important to forget how old they are, how many defeats they have on their ledger and how many knockouts they have scored, as the cream tends to rise to the top regardless. Taking this into account, below is my list of the top 10 British prospects in boxing to look out for in the coming years.
Some are better known than others, and only one has challenged for a world title, but I feel all genuinely have good chances of competing at the highest level as they advance in their careers. So, in order, here are my top 10 British boxing prospects in 2012.

1) Kell Brook 26 years old, Welterweight – 27(18) - 0
The man they call “Special K” is the latest prodigy to arise from the talented backdrop of the Ingle’s Wincobank gym in Sheffield, a gym that was once origin to the likes of Naseem Hamed, amongst others. He lacks the unpredictability and one-punch power of Hamed, but makes up for it with poise, footwork an...

British boxer gets 4-year doping ban

British heavyweight boxer Larry Olubamiwo has been suspended for four years after admitting using more than a dozen doping substances.

UK Anti-Doping says Olubamiwo tested positive for the blood-boosting drug EPO on Jan. 30 following a bout with fellow British fighter Sam Sexton.

The agency says Olubamiwo later admitted to using 13 banned substances, including human growth hormone and anabolic steroids, over a six-year period.

The 33-year-old fighter is banned from participation in all sports until Feb. 28, 2016. All of his boxing results dating back to Jan. 1, 2006 have been annulled.

Olubamiwo had a record of 10-3.

UKAD says it investigated Olubamiwo based on intelligence gleaned from the 2007 U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration probe into drug trafficking called Raw Deal.

Demolition Man: David Price Obliterates Sam Sexton, Readies Himself For Blast-Off Onto World Stage

Heavyweight David Price laid waste to another of the fair-to-middling domestic guard at home in the Aintree Equestrian Centre on Saturday, flattening an overawed Sam Sexton umpteen times before finishing him with a splat in round 4. Merseyside’s first ever British heavyweight boss, Price marked himself out as a prospective world class player. In today’s moribund heavyweight division, that’s a rare distinction indeed – a sort of Bullingdon Club for well conditioned, oversized technicians. Although Sexton, 228 ½, offered very little, other than a back-pedalling target, Price, 245 ½, looked a little less rigid yet more compact than in previous bouts. And while his left arm hangs limply by his beltline more often than it’s up where it should be, shielding his chin, his whiskers are unlikely to be troubled at this level. After a demoralising opening quarter, Sexton found himself bundled to the mat with a cuffing right hook prior to the close of round 3. Oddly, the Norfolk man rose to a...

2008 Olympic Bronze Medal Winner David Price Showcased in Battle of British Heavyweights
American boxing fans will have the opportunity to watch red-hot British heavyweight prospect David Price in action this Saturday afternoon (May 19) on FIGHT NOW TV - live starting at 5:45 PM / ET from Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Price 12-0, 10 KOs), a 2008 Olympic bronze medal winner, defends his British Boxing Board of Control ("BBB of C") British heavyweight crown against veteran Sam Sexton (15-2, 6 KOs) in the 12-round main event that's also for the vacant Commonwealth title.
The undefeated Price is an imposing figure in the ring, standing 6' 8" and weighing 245 pounds. He is coming off of an impressive BBB of C British heavyweight title-winning performance last January against veteran John McDermott (26-7), in which Price floored his outclassed opponent three times in the opening round. As a prelude for Saturday afternoon's heavyweight championship match b...

The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Mikkel Kessler, Karim Mayfield And 24/7 Pacquiao/Bradley

Sticking with the theme from last week’s schedule, here’s a two minute video of movie characters saying “son of a *****.” As usual, the heading video has nothing to do with the schedule, despite my occasional attempt to make a tenuous connection. Like this: It’s almost, but not quite, the kind of week that will have you saying “son of a ******** when you’re looking for some boxing to watch. Yeah, that was terrible. Anyway, Mikkel Kessler is finally returning to action and there’s some fun to be seen on Friday Night Fights, as well as the usual global goings on.

Karim Mayfield vs. Raymond Serrano, Friday, ESPN2, Albany N.Y. The capital of the Empire State hosts this interesting match up between limited junior welterweight prospects Mayfield and Serrano on Friday. To me, this is a good FNF fight – neither of the undefeated protagonists will ever be elite, but they’ll test each other and hopefully entertain in the process. Mayfield (15-0-1) has had weird career arc. He...

On Saturday, May 19, 2012, fans at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev., as well as those watching around the world, will see one of boxing's most intense grudge matches re-ignited when World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Lightweight Super World Champion and (IBF) Junior Welterweight World Champion Lamont "Havoc" Peterson faces former Two-Time World Champion Amir "King" Khan in the highly anticipated rematch of their December 10, 2011 fight in Washington, DC in which DC native Peterson scored a title winning but controversial split decision victory over the United Kingdom's Khan.

Robert Helenius vs. Dereck Chisora Preview & Prediction

The vacant European Heavyweight Title will be on the line Saturday, November 3rd as Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius and Derek “Del Boy” Chisora will square off at the Hartwell Arena in Helsinki, Finland. The European sluggers are two of the best that the heavyweights have to offer these days and a win may very well mean a shot at one of the Klitscho brothers who both sit atop the Heavyweight division.
Robert Helenius (16-0, 11 KOs)

WBO and WBA Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion

The rising Heavyweight contender has looked impressive in his most recent outings. In August, he turned out a remarkable victory over contender Sergei Liakhovich (25-4) via a 9th round TKO stoppage. Liakhovich had turned down an opportunity with one of the Klitschko’s to take on Helenius and legitimize his standing in the division with a win, but Helenius had different thoughts. Prior to that fight, Heleniu
