Sauerland has 3 shots at Wladimir Klitschko: Povetkin, Helenius & Pulev

Exciting news for Robert Helenius (18-0, 11 KOs) and Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KOs). Both top heavyweight contenders currently hold the number one spot in their respective rankings.
After beating former world champions Lamon Brewster, Samuel Peter and Siarhei Liakhovich, the WBO (World Boxing Organization) already instated Helenius as their number one fighter back in September of last year.
However, after the fight for the European Championship against Dereck Chisora in December 2011, the Finn had to take a longer break due to a serious shoulder injury.

On November 10, Helenius gave his successful comeback in Helsinki. After ten rounds, the "Nordic Nightmare" won a unanimous points decision against Sherman "The Tank" Williams - the WBO's previous number ten. In their latest Rankings, 28-year-old Helenius is back as the number one ranked boxer.

Klitschko TKOs Charr to retain title

Vitali Klitschko stopped Manuel Charr of Germany in the fourth round to retain his WBC world heavyweight title Saturday night.

The 41-year-old Klitschko won by a technical knockout when the bout was stopped by the doctor with 56 seconds left in the round because of Charr's bleeding eyebrow.

It was Klitschko's ninth consecutive successful defense of the title since beating Samuel Peter in his comeback to the ring in 2008.

The Ukrainian has improved to 45-2 with 41 KOs.

The 27-year-old Charr, who was born in Beirut, suffered his first defeat and dropped to 21-1 with 11 KOs.

Klitschko dominated from the beginning and left little doubt about the final outcome.

Charr desperately protested the doctor's decision to stop the fight, but was finally calmed down by his assistants.

Wladimir Klitschko’s 5 most exciting fights

In boxing circles, Wladimir Klitschko's name is often synonymous with a good snooze. While he stands as the clear top dog of the heavyweight division, Klitschko the Younger has a robotic, control-and-avoid action style that scores points and wins fights, but fails to move most fight fans to cheering adulation.
Even so, it would be unfair to say Dr. Steelhammer is boring. Prior to the adoption of his risk-free approach, Wladimir Klitschko used his athleticism, size and power to force the action, producing serious fireworks. And before he perfected that risk-free style, some fighters had the stuff to take the fight to the big Ukrainian, also producing exciting fights. All you need to do to find some Klitschko excitement is to rewind the clock a few years, and viola! You find all the fodder you need for a Top 5 list.
Top 5 Most Exciting Fights for Wladimir Klitschko

Summer guide to heavyweight action

Nobody will ever make a case for this being a golden age in the heavyweight division. However, that doesn't mean the division is completely devoid of intrigue.

Forty-year-old WBC champ Vitali Klitschko may not fight beyond 2012, and the implications of that title vacancy are having challengers jockey for position.

Meanwhile, WBO/IBF/WBA champ Wladimir Klitschko is still going strong and has, for the most part, cycled through all available challengers. Although the younger Klitschko brother will be relegated to fighting rehab projects for the foreseeable future, there are plenty of interesting fighters in line behind him. Maybe none have a legitimate chance of defeating him, but good bouts could be had among the second-tier big men.

Names like Alexander Povetkin, Robert Helenius, Chris Arreola, Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev and at least a half-dozen other names could be matched together for interesting bouts. Further down the line, Seth Mitchell, David Price and Mike Perez could also become interesting figur

Wach vs. Fields preview: former training camp roomies battle it out

No more ‘Mr. Nice guy’: Former roommates square off as gentle giant Wach defends title against Fields
Two years ago at Samuel Peter’s training camp in California, Mariusz Wach found a unique way to break the ice with his new roommate, fellow heavyweight contender Tye Fields.
They bonded over lunch.
“He made me a bowl of chicken soup one day,” Fields said. “He’s a real nice guy.”
Now Wach (26-0, 14 KOs) is preparing to feed his former roommate a steady diet of right hands as the undefeated Polish heavyweight defends his World Boxing Council (WBC) International heavyweight title against Fields (49-4, 44 KOs) in the 12-round main event of “Heavyweight New Generation,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports and Global Boxing on Saturday, March 24th, 2012 at the Resorts Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.
Ranked No. 9 in the WBC, Wach is on the precipice of fighting for a major world title, but first he must get past the cagey Fields, a massive, 6-foot-...

A Klitschko Brother Gets His Hardest Fight In Years, But Still Tops Dereck Chisora

Before Vitali Klitschko fought Dereck Chisora Saturday, Chisora gave Vitali's brother Wladimir a face full of water, which he spat out onto the heavyweight champ in a typically classless move. During the fight, Chisora gave Vitali a handful -- a harder fight than either brother has endured in many, many years, maybe going back to 2005, when Wladimir hit the canvas a few times against Samuel Peter. Chisora still lost the decision, and the face-spitting incident with Wladimir and weigh-in face-slapping move with Vitali on Friday won't win him all that much respect as a person, but it ought to win him big respect as a boxer.Vitali took the early rounds in typical Klitschko fashion, smartly controlling distance and dropping jabs, straight rights and left hooks on the forward-pressing Chisora. The pressure, though, was having an effect. One of the judges saw Chisora getting an even round against Vitali in the first four, but I thought the 5th was the first round Chisora won. He w...

Helenius and Chisora clash for vacant European Heavyweight Title in Helsinki
Robert Helenius (16-0, 11 KOs) and Dereck Chisora (15-1, 9 KOs) will clash for the vacant European Heavyweight Title in Helsinki, Finland on December 3. Having knocked out former world champions Lamon Brewster, Samuel Peter and Siarhei Liakhovich, the “Nordic Nightmare” is determined to destroy yet another big name.
Some 8,000 tickets have already been sold for the event at the renowned Hartwall Areena, which will also host the WBA Heavyweight Title fight between newly-crowned champion Alexander Povetkin and Cedric Boswell. “We are thrilled to put on the most exciting heavyweight bill in years,” promoter Kalle Sauerland said. “A World title and a European title fight on the same night in one of Europe´s best arenas – that is as good as it gets.”

Why do aging boxers still fight?

A bumper weekend of fight action started earlier on Friday, when James Toney travelled to Russia to face former interim cruiserweight champion Dennis Lebedev.

If boxing fans thought Toney was finished embarrassing himself after his MMA fight against Randy Couture at UFC 118 last year, over the course of 12 rounds they were proven very, very wrong.

In many ways the fight brought to mind the old adage, "I can cope with despair, it's the hope that kills me."

The simple fact that the former super-middleweight champion Toney, who tipped the scales at 257 pounds when he lost to then-heavyweight contender Samuel Peter in 2006, had got in decent enough shape to weigh in under 200 pounds was genuine cause for celebration, and piqued more than a few people's interest. The theory being that if Toney was disciplined enough to get in half decent shape, then maybe we were going to see him put in a decent performance against an opponent who needed 12 rounds to knock out Roy Jones Jr. back in May.

Povetkin & Helenius Discuss Bouts on December 3rd from Helsinki

WBA Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15 KOs) had a busy Monday as Team Sauerland held media days in Finland and Germany. On December 3, the undefeated 32-year-old will take on Cedric Boswell (35-1, 26 KOs) at Helsinki's renowned Hartwall Areena. After catching up with the Finnish media in the morning, Povetkin flew to Berlin to discuss his first title defense with the German press in the afternoon.
“I have been working hard in camp,” he stated. “Teddy Atlas is back in Russia to get me ready for Boswell. He is a strong challenger but we will come up with a plan to leave the ring victorious.”

Also in action on December 3 will be WBA & WBO Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Robert Helenius (16-0, 11 KOs), who takes on an opponent to be announced. Ever since knocking out three former world champions – namely Lamon Brewster, Samuel Peter and Siarhei Liakhovich – Helenius is a superstar in Finland. “It´s a small country,” he said with a smile.

Boxer Power Rankings - November 2011

Thanks to the Chad Dawson-Bernard Hopkins debacle, we almost had our first real controversy with the old Power Rankings. Namely, should we credit Dawson with points for a TKO, following what is, so far, the official decision? Or should we assume that the fight is eventually going to be ruled a No Contest, which is what just about everyone believes will eventually happen?Ultimately, it ended up not mattering, because Bad Chad wouldn't crack the top 10 in our "not a pound-for-pound list" rankings anyway. Nor would he crack the next seven waiting just below it, even if given credit for the stoppage. So we're left with just the usual controversy, which is whether our scores make any sense in the first place. There is some movement at the top this month, with Nonito Donaire jumping up even with a boring win, and two others falling just a bit as they see wins move out of the three-year rolling window.None of this making any sense? Click here for some more clarity. Otherwise, read on for this month&
