WSB team finals: Ukraine vs. Kazakhstan begin on Friday

Who has the best boxing team in the world? Well, we are about to find out in the 2013 World Series of Boxing (WSB) Team Finals.
After 72 matches and 360 bouts, the WSB Team Finals will be contested across two days starting on Friday, May 10 at 8pm local time (14:00 GMT). The remaining ten bouts - potentially eleven in case of a draw after the first night - will be the most exciting the boxing world has seen since the London 2012 Olympic Games Finals. Our finalists will be the star studded Ukraine Otamans and local favorites Astana Arlans Kazakhstan.
The teams have had very different seasons so far with the Arlans showing continual dominance and consistently good performances on their third bid to take the title. The Otamans meanwhile had a sluggish start to the season, holding back their main talent until the last possible minute but in so doing giving valuable experience to the squad's fringe players. That may be a factor in this week's ten man event.
The event will be bro...

In the opening Bantamweight contest it was top ranked 27-year-old Baku Fires Gairbek Germakhanov versus the up and coming Elias Emigdio from the Mexico City Guerreros. The Azeri seemed to settle into a good early rhythm with the clever use of the jab, showing his experience to dominate the early exchanges. The 20-year-old Mexican came back strong though, with several quality punches, to edge the first round. The orthodox Emigdio then went on the offensive in the second, buoyed by his early display, only to be thwarted by the savvy Germakhanov, who wa...

Bantamweights Vincenzo Picardi and Vladimir Nikitin kicked-off the action in spectacular style, with the crowd firmly behind them, the two diminutive fighters started off all guns blazing in the first round. 27-year-old Italian Picardi had the better of the opening exchanges as he connected with several classy combinations. Dynamo Moscow hosted Astana Arlans, looking to overturn a slender 3:2 deficit, and Baku Fires faced with the impossible against the Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder, having lost 5:0 in the first leg.

Friday sees the conclusion of the exciting World Series of Boxing semi-finals as Baku Fires do battle against Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder and Dynamo Moscow face Astana Arlans in the return legs. This promises to be two explosive fixtures with the teams going all out to claim a place for the Team Final on 2 May at the ExCeL in London.
Baku Fires vs. Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder (aggregate score 0:5)

No one had predicted such an emphatic scoreline for the Italian outfit when these two teams met in the first leg in Milan. It was an unforgettable night for the Thunder, but one surely to erase from memory for Baku, who had been so strong during the whole season but somehow seemed to come unstuck during this most crucial match. Mumbai Fighters vs. Baku Fires quarter-final first leg this Friday
Hold on to your seats, the quarterfinals have arrived. Friday will see the first leg of the much anticipated showdown between the popular Venky's Mumbai Fighters and the unbeaten Baku Fires. We learned last season that at this stage of the competition you just cannot predict what will happen. Although the visitors are the overwhelming favorites, Mumbai have come a long way in a short space of time and their starting line-up is in itself very impressive for this match. It promises to be very entertaining to watch.
The winning machine that is Baku Fires stormed through the regular season by winning all ten matches. Topping Group B from the early stages, they never relinquished that position, becoming the only team in the WSB to go undefeated. The experience gained in their first season mixed to extraordinary perseverance has certainly added to this success. Under the careful guidance of Head Coach G...
