Shawn Estrada & Jessie Villanueva win: Results & post-fight video interviews

Sportsmen's Lodge main event pitted Former US 2008 Olympian Shawn Estrada (15-0. 13KO's) against Felix Pieda (9-1-1, 6KO's) in a scheduled 8 round Light Heavyweight bout. Early in the first round Estrada's dominance was apparent. In the second round Estrada forced the action and dropped Pierda at the 1:23 mark. Referee Jack Rees had seen enough to call the stoppage. Right here, find the complete results from the card, as well as video interviews with Estrada and young, undefeated pro Jessie Villanueva.
Jessie Villanueva (5-0, 3 KO's) went up against a gritty, hard punching Benjamin Briceno (Pro Debut) for four tough rounds. Villanuena's body attack kept Briceno at bay allowing for a fourth round victory.
Said Estrada:
"I've learned a lot from Joe Goossen he's my new trainer, he knows all the tricks of the trade, he knows all of them. He's a good trainer and we're going to go a long why from here."
"I really try and ...

The Week’s (Pro) Boxing Schedule, Featuring Darley Perez, Sergio Mora And Hugo Cazares

As you can see by the headlining names, it’s not a big week of professional boxing. I guess boxing promoters and television executives, despite not realizing that counterprogramming each other is a bad idea, realize that counterprogramming the Olympics is a bad idea. Good on them for at least getting that right. As for the video above – future Olympic sport? Could be more entertaining than amateur boxing (at times!).

Darley Perez vs. Bahodir Mamadjonov, Friday, ESPN2, Cabazon Calif. Colombian lightweight Darley Perez takes a step up and a step into the spotlight on Saturday night against Uzbekistan’s Bahodir Mamadjonov. From what I’ve seen, Perez (15-0), a former Olympian and teammate of Yohnny Perez (they like the name in those parts), seems to be a well-schooled orthodox boxer with a pumping jab. Perez was originally slated to fight Michael Katsidis in what would have been a much bigger step up than his Uzbek opponent on Saturday. Mamadjonov (11-0) seems to be a sharp southpa...

Family ties key to Live at the Lodge August 11 featuring Shawn Estrada, Leon Spinks III & Jessie Villanueva

One boxer is trying to carry on the tradition of one of the sport's royal families; the other is trying to establish a reputation for himself and his brother to be eventually synonymous with some of the greatest sibling tandems to lace on the gloves. Both will be featured on the undercard of Goossen Tutor's "LIVE AT THE LODGE" event on Saturday night, August 11.
In the eyes of 22-year old junior featherweight Jessie Villanueva (3-0, 3 KOs), his scheduled four-round contest against Sytel Wilbarn (2-1) from Los Angeles, CA is the next step in his development towards an eventual world championship - a goal his older brother Matt, an undefeated super flyweight -- shares with him.
In the main event, 2008 U.S. Olympian Shawn Estrada (14-0, 12 KOs) will square off with undefeated Felix Piedra (8-0-1, 5 KOs) in a scheduled 8-round light heavyweight contest -- with both fighters taking on their toughest challenge to date. Three other bouts are slated for the...

Back on June 23rd, the San Fernando Valley's legendary Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, CA hosted its first boxing event in 17 years before an appreciative full house. On Saturday night, August 11, Goossen Tutor Promotions, the Valley's first family of boxing, will present the second program in its "LIVE AT THE LODGE" series of boxing events held every two months throughout the year designed by promoter Dan Goossen to produce a number of "Tomorrow's Champions, Fighting Today."

In addition to the main event, young knockout artist Jessie Villanueva (3-0, 3 KOs) of Palmdale, CA. - who won by first-round TKO in the inaugural show last month -- will be featured in a 4-round junior featherweight bout...

Dallas Fighters win in Arlington on ESPN Friday Night Fights

Just as expected, Dallas, Fort Worth boxing fans were treated to a great night of professional boxing at the newly opened College Park Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas. This event was brought to the metroplex by Israel Navarro of Showcase Promotions. A promoter with a new vision for boxing entertainment and according to him, this is only the beginning. The 7,000 seat arena was a perfect venue for local boxing fans, not too big, not too little. It has the amphitheater style seating and you can’t get a bad seat, including wide screen monitors. This is good news for the boxing fans in both Dallas/Fort Worth and the surrounding metroplex. Plans are in the works for another boxing event possibly in June, and on a quarterly basis. Navarro has a multitude of ideas and plans to bring more professional boxing to Dallas and the surrounding cities, which is great news for all the boxing area.

Rough weekend in Texas as Campillo gets jobbed & Estrada competes 20+ lbs above his weight class

Another weekend is in the books and now it’s time to make sense of the aftertaste. And make no mistake--there is one. To be fair, there was a weekend of interesting fights. In Germany, we got what turned out to be the most interesting heavyweight title fight in about a decade. That’s not saying a lot for the division, but hats off to Dereck Chisora for trying. That has to be considered a boon in today’s age of uninspired heavyweight challengers.
And the action in the ring in Texas was actually pretty good. But once again, piss-poor officiating and questionable commission practices cast a pallor over what should have been a good weekend.
Exhibit One: A 196 lb Light Heavyweight
As if the career development of 2008 Olympian Shawn Estrada wasn’t disgraceful enough, now he’s getting a 20-pound cushion too? On Friday, ESPN2 televised what was supposed to be a super middleweight 8-round attraction featuring the unbeaten Estrada. Problem was Estrada checked in at 196 pounds. A few maneuver...

Shawn Estrada & Mike Dallas Jr. shine on FNF in Texas

It wasn't long ago that Mike Dallas Jr. was fighting on ESPN "Friday Night Fights" as an undefeated young prospect. After two consecutive losses, with his back against the ropes, the 26-year-old from Bakersfield showcased a masterful performance against Miguel Gonzalez (20-3, 15 KOs) of Cleveland, OH.
Despite a cut above his left eye that was opened up by an accidental clash of heads in the opening rounds, Dallas displayed great foot and hand speed and landed several quick one-two combos on his way to a unanimous decision victory with scorecards showing 100-90 (twice) and 100-89.
Dallas, who has been training under the watchful eye of the Boxing Writers Association of Americas 2011 Trainer of the Year, Virgil Hunter, improves his record to 18-2-1, with 7 wins coming by knockout.
The show was promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with Showcase Promotions and marked the first ever boxing event held at University of Texas at Arlington's brand ...

Gabriel Campillo Does What He Does, Which Is Get Robbed; Paul Williams Bounces Back A Little

Gabriel Campillo vs. Tavoris Cloud Saturday on Showtime offered the latest, exasperating installment in that phenomenon that is almost unique to boxing: something amazing happens, and then right afterward something so repugnant happens that it washes all the amazing away.Campillo has a history himself of being involved in these kind of scenarios, and it had to be deja vu for him to once more find himself the recipient of a loss he didn't deserve. The bad-luck light heavyweight heroically recovered from a two-knockdown 1st round to lay a serious beating on Cloud, yet one judge had it 116-110 for Cloud. Eight rounds. For Cloud. Somehow. The robbery was disgusting. That scorecard was obscene. The excellent undercard fight -- and horrendous ending -- overshadowed a main event that saw Paul Williams look a touch rejuvenated, albeit in a win against a third-tier junior middleweight in Nobuhiro Ishida. And all his flaws remain there to be exploited by a first-tier junior middleweight, i...

Mike Dallas Jr. and Miguel Gonzalez are set to do battle in the main event of tonight's edition of Friday Night Fights. The venue is the new College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, and Joe Tessitore is joined by Teddy Atlas as usual. Teddy likes the match-up, mentioning that Dallas has lost two fights in a row and should be desperate, while Gonzalez is the stronger guy but has some lingering injury issues.Former WWE announcer Todd Grisham is in the studio tonight, filling in for Bernardo Osuna. He teases a look at the Dereck Chisora slap of Vitali Klitschko and tomorrow's showdown between Paul Williams and Nobuhiro Ishida. Our first live fight almost fell apart because former Olympian Shawn Estrada had so much trouble making weight. His original contract called for him to come in at 172 pounds, but his management renegotiated terms for his opponent Terrance Woods to come in at 177 because Texas allows for a 15-pound buffer. As it turns out, Estrada needed all of it, weighing in at 196 yesterday, then
