Sonny Liston vs. George Chuvalo fantasy fight

George Chuvalo was a major heavyweight contender of the mid-1960s, arguably endowed with the toughest body of any boxer who ever lived. This was so much so that Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) sought to avoid facing him for a time, and Sonny Liston never elected to accept a challenge from the then-Canadian heavyweight champion. In a scenario typical of boxing, the fight came close to happening in 1971, when both fighters were past their best and Liston needed the money. Liston died on December 30, 1971.
But what if Liston decided he wasn't interested in taking on the Louisville Lip, and wanted the mouthy, insolent brat to stew in his juices for a while. What if he chose to take on Chuvalo instead?
The Fighters 1964
Most boxing history buffs analyze this fight based on Chuvalo vs. Foreman, using Big George as a stand-in. There is a certain logic to that, since Foreman was Liston's protege in some respects, but it undervalues Chuvalo. When the big Cannuck fought Foreman in 19...

Boxing card being planned for August 15 at White Sox U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago

Responding to rampant speculation over who will appear in their historic August 16 boxing event at the Chicago White Sox' U.S. Cellular Field stadium, Chicago-based boxing promoter Dominic Pesoli and his partners, Frank Mugnolo of Round 3 Productions and Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing, say fans are going to have to wait.
"We don't know who is on the show. We know it'll be incredible and we're working on several blockbuster match-ups, but it's still very much in the air," said Dominic Pesoli.
The event will be the first of its kind in 50 years, since Sonny Liston knocked out Floyd Patterson in 1962. Margules says he's aware of the importance of making it something unforgettable for fans.
"Boxing in Chicago is enjoying a renaissance and this event will be an announcement to the world that we're back. That's the approach we're taking to constructing this show, making the best fights possible with the local and international flavor th...

Two significant pairs of Muhammad Ali fight-worn gloves - Ali’s (then Cassius Clay) gloves from his February 25, 1964 bout against Sonny Liston and his gloves from his March 8, 1971 bout against Joe Frazier (Ali-Frazier I) – each sold for $385,848 in a SCP Auctions’ November auction which concluded early Saturday. The sale of these two items sets a world-record price for any piece of boxing memorabilia at public auction.

The Angelo Dundee Estate Collection of boxing memorabilia, more than one hundred items spanning the breadth of renowned trainer Dundee’s extraordinary career, brought in more than $1.3 million. Jim Dundee, the late Angelo's son, plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale to the Muhammad Ali Foundation and the auction will also help the Dundee family fulfill Angelo's wish that necessary medical care be provided and funded for Jim's sister, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.

Dundee estate auctioning Ali gloves

Gloves from two of Muhammad Ali's biggest fights are among items being auctioned off by the estate of his former trainer, Angelo Dundee.

One set of gloves was worn by Ali when he won the title from Sonny Liston in a huge upset in 1964, while the other set is from his ''Fight of the Century'' loss at Madison Square Garden in 1971 to Joe Frazier.

Dundee's son, Jim, said the gloves have been stored in a safe deposit box since the fights. They are among more than 100 items that the family is selling in the online sale by SCP Auctions.

''It's kind of bittersweet,'' Dundee said. ''These have been in our possession for nearly 50 years. Dad would bring them home and I would store them.''

Angelo Dundee, who was Ali's trainer throughout his career and also trained Sugar Ray Leonard among others, died Feb. 1 at the age of 90.

On Thursday, each set of gloves had been bid up to $241,577. The auction, which also features gloves from Leonard's infamous

Ingemar Johansson vs. Sonny Liston fantasy fight

The Fantasy Fight Division of ProBoxing-Fans.com is pleased and proud to present a battle for the Heavyweight Championship of the World: Ingemar Johansson vs. Sonny Liston.
Yes, we all know that Floyd Patterson lost his crown to Ingemar Johansson in 1959, won it back the following year, only to have Sonny Liston take it from him in 1962. But what if Patterson had not become the first heavyweight to regain his title? If Johansson had remained champion, he would certainly have faced the swarmingest, hardest-hitting heavy since Rocky Marciano: The Big Bear, Sonny Liston.
Ingemar Johansson
Ingo (26-2-0, 17 KOs) had his first professional fight in 1952. He won the European heavyweight championship in 1956 by knocking out Franco Cavicchi in the 13th. He retained his title by defeating Henry Cooper in 1957 by fifth-round KO, and by stopping Joe Erskine by 13th-round TKO in 1958. His first-round knockout of Eddie Machen several months after his defeat of Erskine ensured ...

#5) Muhammad Ali v Sonny Liston - February 25th 1964

Taken from Vichy Water

The Muhammad Ali v Sonny Liston fight will for many go down as the most exhilarating in boxing history. From Ali’s trash talking leading up to the fight, to the slim chances reporters and bookies alike gave Ali, to the infamous “I am the greatest” shouts after defying all odds; this fight can justifiably be described as the epitome of boxing.

Quick Jabs: Rest In Peace, Angelo Dundee; The New Technology Tonight On HBO; More

Boxing lost one of its greats this week, as everyone knows by now. Angelo Dundee, who died at age 90, was one of the best few trainers ever to grace the game, and he did it all on as big a stage as you can manage, namely training Muhammad Ali. Others have already written or spoken eloquently about what Dundee meant to boxing (Jeremy Schapp's segment on ESPN was really something), but the one thing I keep going back to is this moment:In the Sonny Liston fight, when Ali began having trouble seeing because of a foreign substance that got into his eyes, Ali tried to quit -- he begged Dundee to cut his gloves off. Dundee refused to do it. He told Ali to get out there and run away for a while. Ali eventually won, of course. The Liston win is the one that made Ali Ali. One of the things that made the Ali-Dundee relationship interesting is that Dundee usually just let Ali be Ali; Ali "the boxer" made a ton of technical mistakes, but it worked for him, so Dundee went with it, a...

There are only a handful of athletes who manage to transcend their respective sports to become true global icons. Muhammad Ali tops that list, and today he turns 70.
This is the perfect excuse to share my favourite picture of Ali, taken by Neil Leifer for Sports Illustrated. This is Ali after knocking down Sonny Liston in Lewiston, Maine back in 1965.

Sonny Liston I- “The Louisville Lip” out talked Liston outside of the ring, then outboxed him in the boxing ring with a show of brilliant speed that landed him the TKO in the sixth round.
