Top 3 British boxers to watch in 2013

With British boxing currently riding high along a crest of a wave, it’s not easy to narrow down my selections to just three boxers to keep an eye on this year. I could have easily chosen those on the cusp of greatness, but it would have been all too easy to spout off the same list of names that has been endlessly mentioned before. Don’t get me wrong, I feel 2013 has the potential to be a huge year for the likes of David Price, Kell Brook, Tony Bellew, George Groves, Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg -- but if you look below the surface there is a further generation of exciting prospects looking to make their stamp on the coming year.
So without further adieu, let me count down my top 3 British boxers to watch is 2013.
3. Kid Galahad
With Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg having made a splash in the super bantamweight division in 2012, Kid Galahad’s impressive year went largely under the radar, but expect that all to change in 2013.
The Sheffield youngster has gone 13-0 since turning pro ba...

British Fighter of the Year: Carl Froch

Credit: Lawrence Lustig

Beginning 2012, Carl Froch was considered by many to be entering the twilight of his career. Having negotiated a difficult hurdle of fights with world-class men during the course of the Super Six tournament, he completed his journey by being comfortably beaten by Andre Ward.
It wasn’t the way “The Cobra” envisioned going out so, at 34 going on 35, he accepted the daunting challenge of welcoming the undefeated Lucian Bute to his hometown of Nottingham. Froch admitted after the fight that he would have seriously considered retirement should he have lost.
He needn’t have worried. Froch proved the doubters wron...

Ricky Burns blasts out Kevin Mitchell in 4 rounds

For what seems like forever, the names of Ricky Burns and Kevin Mitchell have been interlinked. As super-featherweights they were earmarked as youngsters with success up ahead, but their paths somehow refused to cross. Last night they finally tangled as experienced, world-rated lightweights at the Glasgow SECC Arena. It was a raucous night, one yours truly was fortunate enough to attend, and an experience I will not forget.
Saturday night actually saw two important British boxing bills as, in addition to Scottish lightweight champion Ricky Burns defending against talented Englishman, Kevin Mitchell, young Northern Irish prospect Carl Frampton tested his metal against seasoned former world title-holder, Steve Molitor. The end result was happiness on both sides of the North Channel. This week I round up all the action from both cards as the sport enjoyed its time in the British spotlight and shone for all the right reasons.

Carl Frampton topples Molitor in six

Results from Belfast: Carl Frampton takes out the Canadian Kid

Barry McGuigan has, for quite some time now, banged the Carl Frampton drum. He has told the press of the young Belfast-man’s power, his dedication and most of all, his potential. Last night in his hometown, Frampton enjoyed something of a coming out party as he downed Steve Molitor three times on route to a sixth round stoppage victory. The outcome sees Frampton emerge from the prospect to contender status, despite having just fifteen fights on his ledger.
Frampton was on top of Molitor, known as “The Canadian Kid”, from the start of the first round until the stoppage came. Hovering around the ring on fast feet, Frampton did not let Molitor get set, pressuring him and stripping his confidence away round by round. The first three rounds saw Frampton connect with straight right hands as he came in to range unloading volleys of punches, not all connecting, before getting out without allowing Molitor to reply.

Carl Frampton confident ahead of Molitor clash: Training video & quotes

Carl Frampton is confident he has what it takes to beat Steve Molitor when the pair go head-to-head in Belfast on Saturday. The undefeated super-bantamweight is defending his Commonwealth and IBF Inter-Continental titles in the headline bout of Betfair’s Judgement Day.
A fired up Frampton, who is trained by boxing legend Barry McGuigan, told Betfair that there would only be one outcome on the night. Right here, take a look at what he had to say, and watch a quick behind the scenes video in his training camp.

“I’m sparring the absolute best that I ever have. I can only see one thing happening and that’s me knocking him out.
“Having Barry as a manager is really great, and he’s really looking after me. I’ve been fast tracked but that’s what I wanted, I don’t want to be fighting guys I’m just expected to beat all the time. I want to be tested.”
For his final word, Frampton also revealed an additional motivation to bring into the ring on Saturday.

British Beat: Kevin Mitchell And Ricky Burns Vie To Become Glasgow’s Razor King; Carl ...

(Kevin Mitchell, left; Ricky Burns, right)Britain’s best match-up of the year takes place Saturday, as cockney wrong ‘un Kevin Mitchell invades Glasgow to tackle Scotland’s smiling assassin, Ricky Burns. The Dear Green Place isn’t exactly an ideal pit-stop for a fighter with a propensity for swimming at the bottom of a bottle. Nevertheless, Mitchell, who pissed away any momentum gained from his sterling effort against Manchester pressure fighter John Murray last year, is hoping that it can frame a redemptive scene that will allow him to grab a seat at boxing’s top table. Burns, meanwhile, looks to solidify his position as one of the finest lightweight boxers in the world, against a top 10 rated opponent who has long been a friend, and is now, fleetingly, a professional obstacle.

Burns, 29, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, is ranked third at 135 lbs. by Boxing News Magazine (Mitchell, 27, has been pegged at number 6 by the same publication). A hustler with a veteran’s poise, Burn...

ESPN3 to Present Live Exclusive U.S. Coverage of Saturday’s Frampton vs. Molitor Super Bantamweight Title Fight
ESPN3 will present live exclusive coverage in the U.S. of the Carl Frampton (14-0, 9 KOs) vs. Steve Molitor (34-2, 12 KOs) Super Bantamweight title fight from Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. ET.
Canada’s Molitor, a former two-time Junior Featherweight world titleholder, said of Saturday’s fight, “He’s (Frampton) European level and I’m world level and come fight night everyone will realize that. This is too soon for Frampton. He has never been in the ring with someone on my level. He is a good boxer, very aggressive, but he makes a lot of mistakes that I plan on capitalizing on. The plan is to win convincingly here against a young undefeated prospect and that will put me in line for a world title.”
Belfast’s Frampton said, “He’s (Molitor) said a few things about me in the buildup and he obviously likes to talk a bit – that’s fine. Al

The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Gabriel Rosado, Ricky Burns And Jorge Arce

It’s the third week we’ve run with some kind of Gangnam Style-related clip to start the schedule. This week the excitement isn’t quite as appropriate, with a British show the only top shelf offering. Perhaps a slightly more self-conscious vid is just the ticket, then. Apart from the aforementioned Ricky Burns vs. Kevin Mitchell lightweight showdown, there’s a lackluster ShoBox card, a Commonwealth featherweight title fight between Steve Molitor and Carl Frampton on ESPN3, a high level cruiserweight rematch in Poland and Jorge Arce fighting in Los Mochis. The insightful and rather debonair Andrew Harrison will have more in depth previews of the British fights later in the week.

Ricky Burns vs. Kevin Mitchell, Saturday, Glasgow.
British Beat: Kid Galahad And Chris Eubank, Jr. Grab Lead Roles In 90’s Franchise Reboot

This week’s action comes not from New York City but from Rotheram. The Magna Science and Adventure Centre, a converted steelworks in the South Yorkshire ‘burbs, presents a crossroads fight in its truest sense. Blue-chip junior featherweight rookie Kid Galahad, 10-0 (4), attempts to break cover in a nationally televised showcase against recently deposed British champion and domestic stalwart Jason Booth, 36-8 (15). Chief support heralds the continuing emergence of another kid, this one already laden with expectation, as Chris Eubank, Jr. blows into town to take part in his second professional outing.

The sagacious soul who once declared it impossible to antagonize and influence simultaneously could never have imagined the forebearers to this piece. Galahad was not yet born when Eubank, Sr. unleashed a peacock-strutting act that had been derived in part from the Sheffield sweatbox instrumental to this promotion. A King Rat figure, Eubank’s incendiary public persona helped to nur...

Put up or shut up time for Sebastian Gauthier
Two-time world super bantamweight champion Steve "The Canadian Kid" Molitor has picked out the perfect Christmas present for provincial rival Sebastian Gauthier, wrapped with a bow on top and even delivered it to Quebec City. Unfortunately, at least for now, the gift remains unopened.
Last month in Gauthier's backyard, after Molitor (34-2, 12 KOs) won a 10-round split decision on the Lucian Bute-Glenn Johnson card at Pepsi Center in Quebec City, Team Gauthier loudly complained about an unfair outcome and requested an immediate rematch. Team Molitor has officially offered a rematch February 11 to Gauthier (21-3, 13 KOs) at Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, which is where Steve lives and trains.

Bute outpoints Johnson in title defense

Montreal fighter Lucian Bute successfully defended his IBF super-middleweight title with a one-sided decision over Glen Johnson on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old Bute improved to 30-0, winning all 12 rounds on two judges' cards and 11 of 12 on the other in front of a crowd of 15,306 at the Colisee.

''It was a great fight and a great performance for me,'' said Bute, born in Romania. ''Glen Johnson is a great fighter. To beat him, you have to avoid the jab. I did that and I tried to out-jab him. I have to be able to beat guys like him.''

The 42-year-old Johnson dropped to 51-16-2. He has lost four of his last six fights.

The Jamaican injured his right arm in the fight.

''I think I won the fight,'' said Johnson, known as the Road Warrior because he often fights in his opponents' home cities. ''I beat him with one hand.

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring James Kirkland vs. Alfredo Angulo, Glen Johnson vs. ...

This week is a good week to a be a fan of people punching each other in the face. There's more boxing on TV than any weekend in recent memory, and it's not going to stop. There's a good fight (or good fights) every weekend from now until the end of the year. This golden stretch kicks off with a bang, featuring no a whole heap of top rated fighters, and even top rated fighters fighting each other. Imagine that! The two premium cable shows, on HBO and Showtime, are mouthwatering. Their undercards are interesting. I don't see how Michael Katsidis and Ricky Burns don't produce a Fight of the Year-worthy bout. Chris Arreola doesn't know how to be un-fun. The only thing to be upset about is that the aforementioned premium shows are going head to head. But that's what DVR is for, dummy. Welcome to the future. Welcome to November/December 2011!
