Usher To Play Sugar Ray Leonard In Upcoming Roberto Duran Biopic

Usher, or Urshur to his friends, is going full Ali and playing a boxer in an upcoming Roberto Duran biopic called Hands of Stone. He’ll be playing the role of nemesis Sugar Ray Leonard.
“You couldn’t find a more stylized boxer than Sugar Ray Leonard,” Usher said by telephone. “He was an incredible motion guy, the way he moved around the ring, and I think my dancing will make it easier for me to pick up his moves. I’ve been working on familiarizing myself with the ring, sparring and just understanding how to move in the ring.”
Oh sure. Dancing translates to boxing just as well as it does to wrestling. Ask Miguel how that thinking worked out for him.
Will Smith was able to bulk up for his role in Ali. Usher claims he’s been preparing for his role for over a year but still needs to lose 20-25 pounds. He might want to choose some tougher sparring partners.

Duran is the one supposed to say “No mas” not Sugar Ray Leonard.
Edgar Ramirez will play the lead role of Duran. Robert de Niro will play

Camacho shot, in critical condition

Former three-division world champion boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho, the flamboyant and often troubled Puerto Rican fighter, who was raised in New York City, was shot in the jaw in Bayamon, Puerto Rico while riding in a car on Tuesday night. He is listed in critical condition. A man driving the car was also shot and killed. Police have one suspect in custody according to reports in the local newspaper Primera Hora. It was not clear what relationship, if any, Camacho had with the other victim. The 50-year-old Camacho was unconscious as he was taken to the trauma center at Centro Medico in San Juan. Hospital officials said he was in serious condition. According to doctors, Camacho was struck once in the left jaw and the bullet travelled down his neck and lodged in his right shoulder. Along the way the bullet fractured his 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae and Camacho lost so much blood that he needed a transfusion. There was no mention of paralysis and doctors could not determine if he ha

Legend vs. legend: Head to head stats for Leonard, Hagler, Hearns & Duran

Looking back on what we'll never see again - Leonard vs. Hagler vs. Hearns vs. Duran
During the 10 year period from 1980 through 1989, 9 fights occurred that featured Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran fighting against each other. The almost annual showcase featuring these Hall of Famers made their four person rivalry unmatched in the history of boxing. Their rivalry started in the first year of the decade and ended in the last, dominating the glory days of boxing in the 1980s. For those of you unable to remember or too young to recall their great series of fights, here is the chronological summary of their bouts:

Commentary Classics: James "Buster" Douglas Vs. Mike Tyson

The Scene: Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan -- February 11, 1990. Mike Tyson, the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world, battles unheralded Ohio man James “Buster” Douglas in the seventh defence of his unified crown. An imperious force, Tyson had been expected to despatch Douglas with ease yet, as we join the HBO commentary team of Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley and Sugar Ray Leonard at the culmination of round 9, Douglas had already given the champion the hardest fight of his career.

Lampley: The most action-filled, heavy punching exchange round of Mike Tyson’s career. Merchant: And Mike Tyson is hurt, his eye is closing and he is behind in this fight. Leonard: There is just an incredible surge of… of strength and life in “Buster” Douglas. Merchant: (watching replay) Let’s take a look. “Buster” Douglas is just going at him and what he’s doing is -- what other fighters who have had Tyson in trouble have backed off to admire their work -- and when he got him in trouble he we...

Would Someone Please Buy Sugar Ray Leonard’s O.C. House; $2.175MM

Poor Sugar Ray Leonard. The legendary boxer has spent the better part of three years trying desperately to unload his Orange County golf course house to no avail. We think there’s a reason – besides the price – buyers are by passing on this 6,700 sq. ft. home. It has nothing to do with the bedrooms or open floor plan. Take one look at that stupid pool setup Sugar has in the backyard.
Have you ever seen a more worthless bridge to a Jacuzzi?
That’s exactly why Sugar can’t sell this house. Everyone realizes what happens to drunk people walking on wet bridges at like 2 a.m. after doing body shots in the hot tub, right? Yeah, people crack open their skull on that concrete. Am I spending $2.1 million and getting a deathtrap? Um, no.
First listed for $2.6 million in January 2009, Sugar has now dropped the price $300k below what he paid in 2005. That said, he’s probably going to lose at least another $300k during a negotiation.

Leonard, Hagler, Pryor inducted into boxing hall

Al Bernstein stood in front of a thousand fans as he accepted his commemorative ring, and then took the podium at the 23rd International Boxing Hall of Fame's induction ceremony on Sunday.

Behind Bernstein sat a ''who's who'' of boxing legends, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Aaron Pryor. Bernstein, the noted boxing analyst for Showtime, was one of the six living members of this year's induction class, which featured the likes of Thomas ''The Hitman'' Hearns and Mark ''Too Sharp'' Johnson.

As he began his speech, Bernstein glanced at the greats behind him and was humbled.

''This Hall of Fame is essentially for the great boxers you see on this stage,'' Bernstein said. ''It is built for them. It is their house. This Hall of Fame is very generous in the way it welcomes those of us who filled another function for boxing. I take this as a supreme honor that I'm allowed to be a part of this place that is so spe

The Scene: Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A. -- September 16, 1981. Detroit’s unbeaten welterweight star Thomas Hearns and Maryland golden boy Sugar Ray Leonard had met head on to determine an undisputed world champion. After a tentative opening, Hearns had overcome the first crises of his career and had begun to pull away into a lead on the scorecards. Closed-circuit analysts Don Dunphy and Dr. Ferdie Pacheco pick up the action from ringside at the beginning of round 12.

Dunphy: Round 12. Pacheco: Hearns is having a good time all of a sudden. He got safely out of danger and he had a big round -- now, is he gonna get careless again? He almost got knocked out in rounds 6 and 7. Dunphy: That’s right. Leonard’s still full of fight -- as is Hearns. One of the few clinches and they break by themselves. There hasn’t been a real clinch in the fight. Pacheco: There has not been one real clinch in the fight. Dunphy: Even when Hearns was hurt in two rounds he did not cl...

Dundee was an ambassador for boxing

He saved a young Cassius Clay when he was in trouble in England, convinced Sugar Ray Leonard that he could somehow overcome the fearsome Tommy Hearns. Angelo Dundee worked thousands of corners, and had just as many stories about fighters and the games they played in the ring.

The best work of his life, though, may have been selling a sport that was often tough to sell.

''He spread good will for a sport that often doesn't have a lot of good will,'' said retired AP boxing writer Ed Schuyler Jr. ''What he did to promote boxing is his greatest contribution to the sport.''

Dundee, who died Wednesday in Tampa, Fla., at the age of 90, was a master motivator who shared the world stage with the greatest fighters of his time. But it was his 53-year relationship with The Greatest and the way they shocked the world together that will always be his legacy.

Muhammad Ali didn't need anyone to tell him how to box. He came by it so naturally that there wasn't much Dundee was goi

Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee dead at 90

Boxing trainer Angelo Dundee, who oversaw some of the biggest fights in boxing history and trained both Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, died Wednesday in Tampa, Florida at the age of 90. Dundee was the genial, whip-smart motivator who was behind virtually all of Ali’s career.
He attended Ali’s 70th birthday party in Louisville last month, and passed away surrounded by family.
Many in boxing laud Dundee as possibly the greatest trainer of all-time for taking a supremely talented by often distracted Ali and molding him into arguably the greatest heavyweight to ever step in the ring.

Dundee was also in Leonard’s corner when he fought Tommy Hearns in 1981 and famously yelled at him for falling behind, imploring him to come back. Leonard rallied for a knockout win in what may have been the signature fight of his career. You can watch that entire bout here.
He was a fantastic motivator, a great strategist and a guy fighters hated to disappoint. Dundee has always been regar...

Famous trainer Dundee dies at age 90

Angelo Dundee, the brilliant motivator who worked the corner for Muhammad Ali in his greatest fights and willed Sugar Ray Leonard to victory in his biggest bout, died Wednesday in Tampa, Fla. He was 90.

The genial Dundee was best known for being in Ali's corner for almost his entire career, but those in boxing also knew him as an ambassador for boxing and a figure of integrity in a sport that often lacked it.

He died with his family surrounding him, said son, Jimmy Dundee, but not before being able to attend Ali's 70th birthday bash in Louisville, Ky., last month.

''It was the way he wanted to go,'' Jimmy Dundee said. ''He did everything he wanted to do.''

A master motivator and clever corner man, Dundee was regarded as one of the sport's great ambassadors. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994 after a career that spanned six decades, training 15 world champions, including Leonard, George Foreman, Carmen Basilio and Jose Napoles.

Promoter Bob Arum said he had been planning to bring Dundee to Las Vegas for a Feb. 18 charity gala headlined by Ali. He called Dundee a legend in the sport, someone who worked the corner for some of the greatest fights of the times.

''He was wonderful, he was the whole package,'' Arum said. '
