Tony Bellew confident of victory ahead of Chilemba rematch

Bomber promises improved output in final eliminator rematch with Isaac Chilemba
Tony Bellew has vowed to overcome Isaac Chilemba’s spoiling tactics and land himself a shot at the WBC title when the pair rematch as chief support to Carl Froch’s blockbuster bout with Mikkel Kessler at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office in ‘Warriors’ Call’ in association with Betfair.
The Bomber and his South African rival drew their WBC light heavyweight final eliminator in Liverpool in March but agreed a quick rematch with the winner to face either Chad Dawson or Adonis Stevenson for the green belt.

Bellew has promised an improved performance this time around, and says Chilemba had no other option but to fight him again.
“I wanted the rematch straight away and he basically had nowhere to go,” said Bellew. “He is somebody who no-one wants to fight because at the end of the day Isaac Chilemba is in the ‘who-needs-you’ club because he doesn’t come...

The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Carl Froch, Delvin Rodriguez And Roman Gonzalez

Gotta love Giovani Segura – not only is he an action hero, but he’s pushing the already stretched frontiers of sponsorship in boxing by emblazoning the name of a registration services company on his Julio Cesar Chavez style headband. Who knows what this week will bring in terms of advertising, but it’ll have some good boxing. Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler fight on HBO in a card made only slightly less appetizing by the scratching of the Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute co-feature. There’s also a few other bits and bobs, so check it out.

Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch II, Saturday, HBO, London. Has it really been three years since these guys last fought? Geez, time flies when people are punching each other in the face. The intervening time hasn’t done much to take the lustre off this super middleweight match-up. Since Kessler’s original victory, Froch (30-2, 22 KO) has enhanced his prestige with his ridiculously competitive schedule while the Dane has mainly treaded water...

Prizefighter Cruiserweights III preview & draw

Danny McIntosh is hoping to propel himself to a British title shot in new division as he steps up a weight to take his place in Betfair Prizefighter Cruiserweights III at York Hall on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.
The former European light heavyweight champion is ready to bounce back from defeats to Eleider Alvarez, Tony Bellew and Eduard Gutknecht with success in Betfair Prizefighter and would be looking to fight Jon-Lewis Dickinson for the British cruiserweight title immediately, if he claims the £32,000 winner’s cheque this weekend.
“Betfair Prizefighter is renowned for putting people in the spotlight and giving them chances,” he said. “I am taking a step on weight and why not? I think it is a great chance to get success in a different division and maybe push forward and get a British title.
“I would fit into the cruiserweight division near the top, that is simple. If and when I win this Prizefighter, I want a British title shot straight away. Jon Lewis Dickinson won Prizefighter...

No-Win Situation: Anthony Crolla, Derry Mathews, Tony Bellew And Isaac Chilemba All Draw

(Anthony Crolla, right, shares the spoils with Derry Mathews)

On a promotion that had been marketed with the tagline “No Retreat, No Surrender” there were “No Winners” Saturday on Merseyside. Lightweights Anthony Crolla and Derry Mathews could not be separated after 12 tense rounds at Liverpool’s Echo Arena, while in the main event, light heavyweights Tony Bellew and Isaac Chilemba also hit deadlock at the end of a tedious encounter that neither man tried hard enough to win. Even the Sky Sports commentary team had an off-night, along with an entire raft of young prospects on a televised undercard.

For a handful of rounds, the do-over between Mathews and Crolla appeared to be heading in the same direction as their first battle. Crolla, 134 ½, nicked the opening session due to his tidier boxing, however, Mathews, 134 ¾, landed the heavier punches in rounds 2 and 3 and seemed the more comfortable of the pair. Boxing on the back foot and smartly decked out in yellow and bl...

Bellew vs. Chilemba results: Disappointing draw verdict

Last night saw Tony Bellew and Isaac Chilemba draw in their WBC eliminator contest. In a match that failed to live up to its pre-fight buzz the judges scored the encounter 116-112 to Chilemba, 116-115 to Bellew and a 114-114 draw.

Credit: Lawrence Lustig

In the immediate aftermath Bellew told the ringside cameras "I'm going to be totally honest - I thought I won that fight. I thought I won nine of the 12 rounds." However, if truth be told, Bellew failed to capitalize on his opportunities and was arguably lucky to come away with the draw.
In front of his home crowd, it was Bellew who started the quicker of the two, as he looked to box on the front foot and push Chilemba up against the ropes. However, despite the Liverpudlian having the better of the opening exchanges he failed to land any meaningful shots with the Malawian's slick style keeping him out of trouble.
By the mid rounds, Chilemba had begun to feel his way into the fight, catching the local hero with a ...

Q&A interview with Anthony Crolla: Ready for Fight of the Year rematch with Derry Mathews

Last year Anthony Crolla lost to Derry Mathews in an instant classic, which went on to win our British Fight of the Year award. This Saturday the two meet again, in the chief support bout on the Tony Bellew - Isaac Chilemba card, and we managed to catch up with Anthony Crolla to discuss the fight.

Credit: Mark Robinson

Last time the two of you met Derry Mathews won. What have you and Joe (Anthony's trainer) been working on to make sure that doesn't happen again?
AC: We don't want to give too much away but we've learnt our lessons. We've been doing a lot more strength work and working on the little mistakes we made. But at the same time we felt up until the knock down we were dominating the last fight so not everything has to be changed.
In that fight Derry caught and hurt you. Could he do that again?
AC: He hurt me last time and he can hurt me again, I'm under no illusions there. However, despite what Derry says he was hurt last time as well, so we can hurt...

Q&A interview with Tony Bellew: Predicting a vicious win over Isaac Chilemba

On Saturday night, in Liverpool, Tony Bellew will meet Isaac Chilemba in WBC world title eliminator. With the winner set for a world title shot against either Chad Dawson or Adonis Stevenson, it is set to be an electrifying evening in the city's Echo Arena. Despite being deep in preparation for the fight, Tony Bellew took time out to have a quick chat with us before his big night.

Credit: Mark Robinson

Last time out against Roberto Bolonti you got badly cut early on and had to adapt your game plan. Do you feel you learned a lot from that fight?
TB: I learned a massive, massive amount. I went out there like a crazed animal trying to knock him out in the first 2 rounds and ended up with an arsehole above my eyebrow. It was crazy to go through that but I've done it and got through it and you learn from that.
In preparation for this fight with Chilemba you've been out sparring and training in New York... what's that been like?
TB: New York's a great experience. It...

Tony Bellew-Isaac Chilemba presser photos, quotes & video

Tony Bellew has warned Isaac Chilemba that he is willing through the pain barrier and beyond for victory in their official final eliminator for the WBC light heavyweight title on Saturday night in Betfair’s ‘No Retreat, No Surrender’ at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, live on Sky Sports.
Bellew and Chilemba came face-to-face for the first time at today’s press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool ahead of the crunch clash on Saturday, and the hometown star rejected the thoughts of Chilemba’s trainer Buddy McGirt, who predicted Bellew would struggle to cope with the pressure of performing in front of a huge Merseyside crowd.

“People have no idea what I am willing to put on the line,” said Bellew. “He won’t understand until he gets in. It is alright saying all the pressure is on me, pressure is nothing getting in front of thousands of people, I get a buzz out of it, I get a kick out of it; there is no pressure.

Isaac Chilemba confident against Tony Bellew, ready for the best

On March 30, top-rated light heavyweight contender Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba (20-1-1, 9KO's) will look to wrestle away the WBC silver light heavyweight title from defending champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12KO's) when the two meet in the main event on Matchroom Sport's promoted card taking place at the Echo Arena in Bellew's home city of Liverpool.
"I have been waiting for an opportunity like this for a very long time," said the WBC #4, IBF #9, WBO #13 and WBA #14-rated Chilemba. "Bellew is a very worthwhile opponent and I am not underestimating him on any level, but my team and I are extremely confident going into this fight. I know that fighting on foreign soil is never easy, but whether it is by KO or on points, I only see this fight ending in one way, and that is with my hand being raised as the clear-cut winner."

Tony Bellew vs. Isaac Chilemba preview & prediction

On March 30th, Tony Bellew will square off against Malawian Isaac Chilemba in front of his home fans at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. With the match-up being a WBC final eliminator, and the winner facing Chad Dawson, both fighters will be looking to produce a big performance before a showdown with the number one ranked light heavyweight. With therebeing very little to choose between the two and the fact neither man is afraid to let his hands go, we could be in for a real humdinger come fight night.
Tony Bellew

Age 30
Record: (19-1, 12 KOs)

Tony Bellew will be looking to make an early statement in the light heavyweight division come the March 30th, knowing full well that having turned 30 this may well be his make or break year. Last year saw the Liverpudlian record stoppage victories over Danny McIntosh and Edison Miranda before going the distance with Argentine Roberto Bolonti, and Bellew will be looking to capitalize on this momentum as he continues on his quest for a world title.

Iron Harvest: Edison Miranda Quits In Round 9 Against Tony Bellew

Tony Bellew fought as though cloaked in a bomb disposal suit at London’s Alexandra Palace Saturday, and after taking an ultra-pensive look at Colombian visitor Edison Miranda for the best part of eight rounds, he rendered the former IED safe with a controlled explosion of body shots at 2:54 of round 9. Miranda (174 ¾) had arrived in England confident of springing an upset and he fired off a decent salvo of hooks in round 2 which backed up the disorganised looking Liverpudlian against the ropes. Mainly, though, Bellew (174 ½) moved on the veteran and when either of the big hitters landed a punch, it instinctively caused the recipient to mug, shrug, dance or go walkabout. Often, it resembled boxing video game Fight Night the first time both players manage to locate the “taunt” button. Bellew boxed carefully through the middle rounds with neither man working hard enough to establish firm control. Miranda looked ready to be taken in round 7 but Bellew opted to stroll away again and le...

Tony Bellew knocks Danny McIntosh out in five

Tony Bellew defended his British light heavyweight title successfully tonight when he knocked out game but outclassed Danny McIntosh in the fifth round at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Bellew was in control for the entirety of the fight, out-skilling and out-punching the willing McIntosh. McIntosh was unable to mount an attack on the fast moving Liverpudlian, and was always a step or two behind his taller and bigger rival. When Bellew started to move through the gears as early as the second round, McIntosh simply couldn't respond and he took a pounding in the third round, walking on to Bellew's impressive variety of punches.

On the bell to end the fourth, McIntosh took a knee to escape the onslaught, was up at eight, but the writing was on the wall. Early in the fifth, the two fighters clashed heads, and Bellew disengaged to dab at his eye. When referee Terry O'Connor instructed them to box on, McIntosh walked precisely on to a Bellew right, and went down on his back. O'Connor didn't both

Cleverly beats Bellew in points decision

Nathan Cleverly retained his WBO light-heavyweight title with a majority-points decision over Tony Bellew after 12 rounds Saturday.

Cleverly was scored 117-112, 116-113, 114-114 on the three judges' cards to improve his unbeaten record to 23 successive wins.

''I knew he would be dangerous in the first three rounds, but in all honesty I thought he'd tire more,'' the Welshman (23-0, 11 KOs) told Box Nation TV. ''But he held in there and showed he is a brilliant challenger. He's very fit.''

Bellew (16-1, 10KOs) was warned early on by referee Richie Davies after appearing to aim a headbutt at Cleverly.

As the action began to settle, Cleverly landed two good rights to shade the first round, but Bellew responded with a furious assault in the second, flinging hooks with both hands.

After a more even third round, Bellew gained the momentum in the fourth with a solid blow to the body, and his rights over the top were posing problems for Cleverly.

Cleverly says he's only watched Bellew fight once

WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly says he has only watched challenger Tony Bellew fight once during his preparations for their title bout on Saturday.

Cleverly was scheduled to take on the former three-time ABA heavyweight champion in May, but Bellew failed to make the weight.

Cleverly said Thursday that ''I've seen what I've had to see and I will just go in and do my thing.''

He added that ''I'm ready to shock an awful lot of people and make the bookies lose an awful lot of money.''

The buildup for the fight has included heated confrontations between the pair. Police also had to be called in at one press conference last month after a row between Cleverly's father and trainer, Vince, and Bellew's camp.

The 24-year-old Cleverly has said he will retire if he loses the bout.
