Rankings updates following Broner-Escobedo fight & controversy

Alright, we're all probably pretty sick of hearing more talk on the Broner vs. Escobedo fight, and the controversy surrounding Adrien Broner's weight and antics. Nonetheless, the fight and the controversy means we have to revise our divisional rankings not only to reflect the bout, but the change in weight class as well. As such, we have an updated top 10 in the super featherweight division, as well as the lightweight division. Take a look.

Updated super featherweight division rankings
Updated lightweight division rankings

So, of course Adrien Broner has been removed from the 130 lb rankings. Even though he hasn't officially fought at Lightweight, he basically has in this last fight, and we're including him in the top 10 at 135 pounds as a result. Even with no actual bouts there, he has to be slotted near the top of the division due to his talent and skill. Meanwhile, does Vicente Escobedo deserve to be in the top 10 at Super Featherweight, despite the knockout l...

Results & photos: Broner ends Escobedo’s night early in controversial fight

Saturday night on HBO Boxing, Adrien Broner scored a 5th round TKO win against Vicente Escobedo, putting an end to this long and drawn out saga. The real story wasn't the fight itself, of course, but the drama that began with the weigh-in on Friday afternoon. With Broner 3.5 pounds overweight, and making no attempt to make weight, the fight was on the verge of being cancelled.
In fact, until about 4 pm on Saturday afternoon, the fight actually seemed to have been called off. Finally, team Escobedo agreed to move forward with the bout, taking an undisclosed sum of money from Broner's cut - projected in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and at least doubling his original purse.

Once in the ring, already with a huge talent and skill advantage in his favor, and now with a huge weight advantage as well, it didn't take long for Broner to assert himself. Escobedo was game, and tried to get things going for himself, but Broner was just wa...

Broner beats Escobedo by TKO in 5th

Adrien ''The Problem'' Broner defeated No. 1 ranked WBO title contender Vicente Escobedo by technical knockout at 2:32 of the fifth round on Saturday.

Broner relinquished his WBO junior lightweight title on Friday after weighing in more than 3 pounds overweight.

Broner, a Cincinnati native fighting in the 130-pound weight class for the final time, improved to 24-0 with 20 KOs, while Escobedo fell to 26-4.

Saturday's fight was to be Broner's second WBO title defense, but he was stripped of his belt after weighing in 3 1/2 pounds over the 130-pound limit.

Broner then weighed in at 143 1/2 on Saturday, prompting Escobedo's camp to threaten to cancel the bout before reconsidering hours before the fight.

Adrien Broner Stops Vicente Escobedo In Tainted Performance, Keith Thurman Pretty Good In HBO Debut

We almost didn't get Saturday night's card on HBO because Adrien Broner unprofessionally failed to make weight and put his junior lightweight bout against Vicente Escobedo in jeopardy. Judging from the outcome, we might not have missed much. Certainly, Broner is a visibly sparkling talent whose performances are worth watching, and welterweight Keith Thurman showed on the undercard why he'll be a prospect to watch. But did we truly need to see a twice-overweight Broner combine his natural ability advantage with a size advantage to whoop a more honest, professional fighter who faced the risk of getting no payday had he turned the bout down? Did we need to see Thurman in a fight that ESPN2 would've gladly aired but that Showtime's ShoBox program for developing prospects might well have rejected? Did we only get this card because of HBO's continued affiliation with influential adviser Al Haymon, even with the network's new leadership? Answers: No, no, and almo...

Broner vs. Escobedo is CANCELLED

Adrien Broner vs. Vicente Escobedo Finally Called Off
After 24 hours of nonstop rumors, conflicting information and a general maelstrom of controversy, the latest we have is that the Adrien Broner vs. Vicente Escobedo match-up slated for HBO Boxing tonight is officially cancelled. The word comes from the Twitter account of an Everlast representative who has been on hand with team Escobedo throughout the ordeal, as have many of the updates we've been providing on this story.
As the powers that be from HBO Boxing and Golden Boy have been mum on the issue, we're still treading lightly in terms of what is definitively taking place. However, as far as we know, Broner vs. Escobedo is off.

This has been an ongoing saga since Broner widely failed to make weight on Friday afternoon, and made no effort to reach the Super Featherweight limit. [Read the original weigh-in story here].

Broner WAY overweight: Broner vs. Escobedo weigh-in results & photos

Saturday night's Adrien Broner vs. Vicente Escobedo fight in Cincinnati, Ohio, is currently in jeopardy. The Broner vs. Escobedo weigh-ins were held on Friday afternoon, and while "Chente" Escobedo, who was dropping down from lightweight, made weight without any issue, Adrien Broner didn't even come close. He weighed in at 133.5 lbs, three and a half pounds overweight, and made no effort to make the weight after the failed first attempt.

In other words, Broner pulled a "Mayweather" - showing up heavy for a fight, having never had any intentions of making weight. Of course, he's doing it at a time in his career with about 1/50th of the accomplishments and fame of Mayweather. You can't just pull this kind of stunt without repercussion, and one would think HBO is growing tired of his antics.
Broner figures though that he'll suck up the financial penalty - 20% of his purse - and he knows that he is in the position of power. Escobedo doesn&...

Adrien Broner vs. Vicente Escobedo preview & prediction

Curiously, the web has been abuzz with support for underdog journeyman and former Olympian, Vicente Escobedo heading into the July 21st match up with Adrien Broner. Admittedly, Escobedo carries a decent highlight reel complete with one and two punch knockouts and exciting victories, though none against a caliber fighter such as Broner.
Is the support for Esocbedo genuine? Do fans truly think the 30-year-old has the ability to take down the much quicker, and younger, Broner in “The Problem’s” backyard? Or, are we looking at a situation where the antics of the more talented fighter have so grated on the fans that even the most dedicated of observers are willing to forgo logic for desire? Going back to the films, it certainly feels like the latter.

Vicente Escobedo takes on Juan Ruiz

Saturday from the Woodland Community Senior Center in Woodland, CA, super featherweight contender Vicente Escobedo takes on Juan Ruiz in a 10-round bout.

Escobedo, who will be fighting in his hometown, has been a contender at super featherweight and lightweight for some time and recently has been mentioned to be in the running to get a crack at Adrien Broner's super featherweight title later this year.

Escobedo (25-3, 15 KOs) turned pro with high expectations, but has not been able to live up to those expectations thus far. He has been a strong contender, but has lost his biggest fights to date. He started with nine wins as a pro but then lost to Daniel Jimenez by split decision in 2008. Escobedo won 12 straight, including a win over Cristian Favela and long faded Kevin Kelley, but then lost to Michael Katsidis in a bid for the vacant WBO title. Escobedo also suffered a wide unanimous-decision loss to Robert Guerrero in late 2010.

Since that time, Escobedo has won three straight over Walter Estrada, Ro

Vicente Escobedo Makes Quick Work Of Lonnie Smith

WOODLAND, Calif. -- Saturday night, from the Woodland Community Senior Center, 2004 U.S. Olympian Vicente Escobedo fought in his hometown for the first time in his 28-bout career, as he met Lonnie Smith of Las Vegas in the ten-round main event of TeleFutura's Solo Boxeo. Escobedo made it a successful homecoming, dismantling Smith in the 1st round, dropping him three times before the fight was waved off. Escobedo (24-3, 14 KOs) came into the fight at 129 pounds, which marks the lightest he had ever weighed for a fight in his run as a professional.
