Italy & Kazakhstan win first WSB semifinals legs

Stankovic and Italia Thunder shock Ukraine Otamans (4-1)
The first battle of these World Series of Boxing (WSB) semi-finals ended on a surprisingly large victory for defending Champions Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder against strong Ukraine Otamans at the Casino Campione in Campione d'Italia.
The evening started at Light Heavyweight (80-85kg) when Hungarian lethal weapon Imre Szello stepped onto the ring to face Otamans' Denys Solonenko. After a tactical first round, Szello dominated the second three minutes making the most of quick counter-attacks. Thunder's right hooks were dangerous in the third round and all of these efforts resulted in a clean advantage after nine minutes. Well known for his habit to finish his bouts quite impressively, Szello didn't even need to accelerate this time due the big difference between the two boxers.
Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder's Middleweight (68-73kg), William McLaughlin, was much more experienced than his rival Ievge...

World Series of Boxing (WSB) is delighted to announce that this season's semi-final first leg match between Mexico Guerreros and Astana Arlans Kazakhstan will be held this Friday, April 12 outside, on the main square of Mexico City.
El Zócalo, formally named Plaza de la Constitución is located in the heart of the historic centre of Mexico City. With its 57,600 square meters, it is one of the largest city squares in the world and has been a gathering place for Mexicans since the Aztec times. It has received foreign heads of state and is the main venue for both national celebration and national protest.
It is bordered by the Cathedral to the north, the National Palace to the east, the Federal District buildings to the south and the Old Portal de Mercaderes to the west. The Nacional Monte de Piedad building is at the north-west corner and the Templo Mayor to the northeast.
Olympic boxing day 5 session 2: Joshua defeats Savon, bout overturned on appeal

The evening session of the fifth day of competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games saw the Bantam (56kg), Heavy (91kg) and Super Heavyweights (91+kg) once again take to the ring at the ExCeL arena where the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The most notable fight was between Anthony Joshua and Erislandy Savon, while the results from another bout have been overturned.
With the great Lennox Lewis, gold medallist at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, and Evander Holyfield in the crowd, Great Britain's third seeded Bantamweight (56kg) Luke Campbell, the AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011 silver medalist, opened up proceedings against the experienced 28-year-old Jahyn Vittorio Parrinello. There was a huge expectation from the crowd that the home boxer would be able to impose his style but the Italian was proving more than a match for him.
The 25-year-old British southpaw was looking to make his height advantage count in the opening round but could not get that break...

Olympic Boxing Guide and Schedule: The Men’s Round Of 16 Part One

After just four days of men's boxing at London 2012, the size of the field has been cut nearly in half. Unlike the round of 32, which wound up yesterday, the top seeds in every division will be boxing. There are no byes. We already covered the heavyweights and super heavyweights in the preview of the first round, as those divisions only have 16 (or less) boxers competing. You can view that here, as well as a more detailed look at the super heavyweight picture.
In this first part of the round of 16 preview, we take a look at the bantamweights, fighting today, and the lightweights and middleweights, fighting tomorrow. American bantamweight Joseph Diaz Jr headed the last schedule and since he's progressed to this round, we may as well make it a tradition.(Joseph Diaz Jr, right, in action against Pavlo Ishchenko in the round of 32; photo via LA Times)

As in the round of 32, there are two sessions of boxing each day, one in the afternoon and the other in the evening. Each se...

Olympic boxing day 1 recap: Americans Terrell Gausha & Joseph Diaz both win big

Boxing begins in style at London 2012 Olympic Games
It was the Bantamweight (56kg) and Middleweight (75kg) Men who got the show underway in spectacular fashion at the packed ExCeL as the London 2012 Olympic Games finally got underway. A pristine venue welcomed the boxers all eager to wow the capacity crowd and with 23 explosive contests ensuring the boxing got off to an electric start, it was a day to remember.
Both Americans in action won their opening bouts, with Joseph Diaz Jr. scoring a wide decision win, and Terrell Gausha notching a stoppage after a tough battle.
Joseph Diaz Jr confirmed his growing reputation with a smartly taken victory over Ukraine's former European Champion Pavlo Ishchenko in the afternoon session's first bout. The American teenager controlled the opening round with the clever use of the jab and some penetrating uppercuts before dictating proceedings in the second with an array of combination punches that saw him really apply the pressu...

Fight Geek Olympics: Day 1 results for Judo & Boxing

Well it only happens once every four years, the world unites and exports their top athletic prospects to London for the 2012 Olympic Games in what will be sure to be an action-packed two weeks that will sweep you off your feet.
If you’re anything like me, you only want to watch the Olympics to spot the next batch of prospects to cross over into mixed martial arts and light up our television screens with hopes for Jordan Burroughs, Jake Herbert, amongst others to don the four ounce gloves in the near future.
The 2008 games in Beijing gave us the likes of Dan Cormier, Sara McMann, Ben Askren and Ronda Rousey and 2012 might deliver even more high-level talents to the eight-sided cage of the Ultimate Fighting Championship or other top fight promotions.
Over the next two weeks I will not be sleeping, I will not be resting, I will not be doing anything but working, writing and watching Olympic Judo, Wrestling, Boxing, Taekwondo (and maybe a little Women’s Beach Volleyball) so I’ll give yo...

Tajikistan team captain and AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011 bronze medalist Anvar Yunusov, a superstar in his homeland, is a serious contender for the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games after consolidating his position as the number one Bantamweight fighter in the World. This gifted southpaw is a savvy operator who has defeated most of his rivals in this Olympic era and now the 25-year-old is currently priming himself for the Olympic Games at the AIBA Road to London part II in Cardiff, Wales.
Having a boxer of Yunusov's stature joining the AIBA Road to London program just shows how highly regarded this initiative is amongst the boxers. Understanding that AIBA hand picks the best coaches from around the world and provides state of the art facilities for these boxers to prepare for major sporting events, has made the initiative so attractive, even for the best in the business.
Born in 1987, he started boxing at the age of 10 and since then has ne...

London 2012: The Italian Olympic Boxing Team

When boxing fans think of fight-mad countries that consistently produce strong international amateur boxing squads, Italy is usually elbowed out by the United States, Russia, Cuba and others. While that might have been true 20 or 30 years ago, it certainly is not true today.
If you are watching boxing at the Olympics, the Italians are one of the teams to keep an eye on. In Beijing, the Italian squad bagged a gold, a silver and a bronze, and the gold and silver came from the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions. All three of those medal-winning, veteran Olympians are back this year, leading a sizable, capable team.
