EU ministers mull Euro 2012 boycott of Ukraine

European Union foreign ministers were debating on Monday whether to boycott this year's European soccer championship matches played in Ukraine to protest alleged abuse of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

''We've been very consistent in sending messages to Ukraine about the importance of justice being done and seen to be done,'' EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said.

When Tymoshenko launched a hunger strike last month after saying she was beaten by prison officials, several European leaders vowed to shun Ukraine during Euro 2012 in protest, but critics have warned that boycotting the matcheswould mean mixing sports with politics and could do more harm than good.

She said Poland, co-host of the tournament, would brief the ministers on the situation. Ukraine is not a member of the EU, but Poland is.

Officials said no formal decision on the move was expected at the meeting on Monday. Instead, the 27 ministers were expected to agree to jointly decide on any future mov

Argentina films Olympic ad at Falklands

Argentina's ambassador to Britain on Sunday defended a controversial Olympic commercial which showed an athlete training on a war memorial in the disputed Falklands Islands.

The 90-second ad sparked outrage in Britain this week when it showed Argentina's field hockey captain Fernando Zylberberg exercising on the island's Great War Memorial, which honors British sailors who died during World War I.

It called the islands by their Argentinian name, Las Malvinas, and carried the tagline "To compete on British soil, we train on Argentinian soil."

Ambassador Alicia Castro, based in London, told Sky News there was nothing wrong with the commercial.

"Malvinas are Argentinian. I mean, the islands belong to Argentina, they are in our continental shelf, so there's nothing wrong with an athlete training there," she said. "I don't really want to go into a small discussion, I would like to go into a broader discussion and the discussion is why can't we sit and talk The i

IOC expresses concern over Argentine ad

The IOC criticized an Argentine TV ad Friday that links the London Olympics to Argentina's dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands, calling it a blatant attempt to use the games for political purposes.

The International Olympic Committee sent a letter to Argentina's national Olympic committee denouncing the ad, which reasserts Argentina's claim to the islands.

The ad shows the field hockey captain Fernando Zylberberg training for the games by running through the islands' capital of Stanley. It says: ''To compete on British soil, we train on Argentinian soil.''

''The Olympic Games should not be a forum to raise political issues and the IOC regrets any attempts to use the spotlight of the games for that end,'' the IOC said in a statement to The Associated Press.

''We are in contact with the Argentine NOC ... and we have been reassured on a number of occasions that the NOC will not seek to use the games as a political platform and will fully resp

Bahrain's king pledges political reforms

Bahrain's king declared himself committed to reform amid tight security for the country's Formula One grand prix, which is to be held Sunday.

King Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa, who is due to attend the controversial race, said in a statement that he wanted "to make clear my personal commitment to reform and reconciliation in our great country."

He insisted that substantial progress had already been made, adding, "The door is always open for sincere dialogue amongst all our people."

His statement came after claims surfaced Saturday that anti-government protester Salah Habib Abbas, 37, was killed by shotgun pellets fired by security forces on a rooftop.

Abbas' funeral could take place later Sunday, which has led to fresh concerns about security at the race.

Armored vehicles and barbed wire have been deployed along the main road leading from the capital, Manama, to the racetrack in an attempt to contain any protests disrupting the event.

Violent disturbances have been intensifyi
